New Characters...

To one and all;

Several new players have recently joined and during this process; I noticed a few things and I thought I might share a couple of thoughts that occured to me lately; and I thought I might share them with new players/visitors to the site wanting to join in the fun....

First of all: Don't be shy! Speak up, PM me, let us all know you're here and what you think of the game! :)

Second; when it comes to character concepts; enough with the snipers allready! :) Four out of the last 5 people to come up with character ideas have gone with a sniper type....

Okay; if that's a role that really interests you; cool and I certainly don't want to tell anyone that a character concept is a no-no; but for a game revolving around a Marine Squad; there can only be so many specialists; so please keep that in mind; and if regular Rifleman doesn't do anything for you; there are other specialties which could work: Machine Gunner; Heavy/Special Weapons, comm-tech, APC driver or vehicle repair, etc., etc. Just a thought! :)

Finally: While different people approach character creation in different ways; one thing I've never been a big fan of is "min-maxing" or the use of "dump stats". What this means is; deliberately making certain stats extremely low and others extremely high because that makes the character 'better' in game-terms at certain tasks. (Usually combat related) If you wish to have low stats for a character-related reason (he's incredibly clumsy....or he's just AWFUL at relating to people, etc.); then that's fine....but making certain stats low just because they have no positivie impact on a character's combat abilities...well, I don't much care for that and I WILL make these low stats come into play, sooner or later.

Well, guess i'll wait until after you post then since you're squad leader and all. I had a post typed up to a few hours ago ready to get up. I'll just follow your lead, though, i suppose. Only fitting. It was only like 700 words anyway.

Nothing special here either, just like a paragraph or two so that the others could hurry and get involved, yourself included. Hopefully by this evening it can be all sorted out.

I'll probably miss the window for new players this time around because I can't stop futzing with my character sheet. I wanted to do something a little different, but still fit into the USCM group dynamic and I'm not sure if that's working. The character concept I came up with definitely doesn't fit the newbie mold, so I have to rethink.

Well, then let me go on and post up my 700 words then Casey, because mine just leads up to the ending of where the scenario had put our squad. It basically ends withme requesting permission from you to fire. This way, ours can coincide together instead of one of ours being ruined and us having to retype.

Sam, I feel you. Seems like I was in your shoes back in like February or something like that. On the other hand, here's hoping Nick comes along in the next minute or so to help the rest of us out of a jam :D

Here's an update, Nick is the only one to my knowledge who can moves you guys into the Player group, which will allow you to be able to post in the campaign. I've PM'd him asking to move Casey, Winters and jaydenhoff into this group so hopefully he'll do this soon.

The rest of you will have to fight over the last available space and once maxvale76 lets me know who it is I'll PM Nick and get him to add them as well.

I think that it'd be nice to have an updated/current roster of marines/characters in excel or whatever once we get settled just who all in it. The old one is rather outdated, but I still think it's just easier to view and look at strengths/weaknesses/equipment of teams than the specific sheets.

Be nice to see one done, no?

I'm not a fan of min-maxing either - I fully expect any weakness I put into my character to be exploited - thats what its there for. My guy is all done and ready for now - so if I could get the last spot, i'd be very happy. If not, I can cope.

I'm guessing "THEY'RE COMING OUT OF THE GODDAMN WALLS!!" is spread out throughout the whole thing though.
