Turn 2: And Away We Go

Post by Pale Rider » Wed Oct 29, 2014 11:36 am

Planet: Goliath
Location: CSC Space
Date: August 4th, 2080
Mission Time: 0730

Previously:
Space is immense, stars viewed from Earth are most likely already dead by the time human eye beholds it. Scientists looking skyward this morning will notate the quick flare and then the death of a star in the CSC Quadrant of the known human galaxy. Only those tumbling through space from the shock wave of the nuclear devise exploding and the Secessionist Movement will know the truth and neither group will be talking.

Now:
The enemy frigate was barely disturbed by the destruction of the Snakefighter, it began to turn its ponderous bulk around to engage the small blip on its radar when the crew member manning the long range scanners alerted the captain to the arrival of a Conestoga class vessel closing rapidly.

"Attention, whoever is in command on the APC! You have not heard the last of the Army of Dragon Lords. This sector belongs to the Secessionists and we will remove the vermin known as the CSA!"

With this the frigate fired its engines to full capacity and fled the scene.

The USS Defiant was a fresh arrival in the Aerospace Arm of the Goliath Colonial Marine Division and as such was the closest group to the Easy Eights. Within thirty minutes the APC and the Marines were loaded on the Defiant.

"Lt. Quinn, please report to Vice Admiral Burns and Lt. Colonial McGehee in the Ready Room. You have thirty minutes to freshen up and I will return to escort you. At this time your command is stationed on E Deck F Barracks in Marine Land," Master Chief Gilmore ordered.

For once, help was incredibly close by. Sixtus didn't recognize the cruiser's name, otherwise he would have known that the Defiant was the Flagship of the sector fleet. Why would he, being just a Line Infantry Lieutenant? But to any Marine worthy of the title, or any soldier for that matter, knows that the attention of anyone of Flag rank was absolutely terrifying. It usually meant one of two things. You were either about to be congratulated or punished. And seeing that they had just come off of a very valuable starship (which were NOT cheap) that they had to scuttle, it likely wasn't the former. There wasn't any other reason men and women of such stature would pay attention to any specific unit of infantry marines, even if they were the President's Chosen Men. And Women.

Sixtus nodded at the Master Chief, his nerve cracking a little. He'd rather face the thousand people aboard the secessionist cruiser than face Vice Admiral Burns. He settled with a sigh and returned the salute from the senior navy man and turned back to the platoon unloading the APC.

"Dirk." he got the Sergeant's attention and waved him over. "Got Vice Admiral Burns on this tin can, along with Lieutenant Colonel McGee. They want to meet with me, which means you get to come as well. So lets get stowed ASAP. E Deck, F Barracks."

It wasn't until ten minutes before the meeting that the Lieutenant remembered that he hadn't grabbed his chucks. The sound of his head hitting his locker reverberated through the locker room.

The explosion, the warning from the Dragon lords and the rescue by the Defiant seemed to happen in rapid succession. In his entire career this was the first time that rescue had been on hand and ready to help. Waiting for the hanger to pressurize he leaned back in his seat. That was close, he said to himself. Too close.

Stepping off the APC after Quinn Dirk listened to the master chief. Damn, anytime the brass is around it's trouble.

"Yes sir. I'll get the men squared away and join you there." Dirk said before turning and walking quickly to the men.

"Morse, Sam. Secure the APC and then get your squads to E Deck, F Barracks. Draw fresh uniforms from supply, hit the showers and then get some chow. The LT and I will be in a briefing with the brass so don't expect to see us for a while. Once I find out what is going on I'll brief the two of you and you can brief your people. Move out."
<Tag Sam and Morse>

Moving over to the APC Dirk stuck his head in and grinned at Oksana." See, like I told you on the Snakefighter, we always seem to make it. until I get new orders, the two of you are still attached to the Eights. That means you'll be bunking with us. E Deck, F Barracks. From there you can draw some fresh clothes from supply. After that a shower and what the Corps calls food waits for you."
<Tag Oksana>

Moving quickly to the ship's supply office, Dirk drew new BTUs and boots. After a quick shower and a shave he checked his watch. Twenty minutes had passed. Finding Quinn he fell instep with his LT.

Sam responded to Dirk with an automatic, Pavlovian "Roger that Top"; and then glanced at the APC in the Cruiser's Hangar Bay and then over at Morse. "Umm.....what exactly do we do to secure it? Lock the doors and give the keys to the Valet?"; she joked. She DID go back into the APC and did her best to make sure that everything was properly stowed and the extra equipment they brought on for their little 'space jaunt'; she doled out to everyone in her squad to carry to the supply lockers and weapons lockers on board as needed.

That done; she led her squad to the barracks and told them all that they had done well in the completely out-of-left-field situation they had found themselves in and to get some rest or some food; and with that; she found a nice bunk and dropped into to stretch out and rest after the craziness of the past few hours.....

Roberts couldn't believe they had survived. He had thought for sure it was the end. Immediately after the USS Defiant showed up, his skepticism returned, but he couldn't stop the thought in his mind that maybe God had saved them. After all, how many times had they escaped by the skin of their teeth?

He pushed the thoughts aside, and followed Corporal Hall's orders to carry the supplies to the armory. He picked up the massive sentry gun, and its computer, but the crate to store them had been eviscerated. "I hope we get to kill those bastards ourselves. I was pretty set on it back there," he said to anyone else carrying supplies. He wasn't sure why he said it; he knew as well as any veteran how it felt to kill another person. Eric preferred to kill monsters.

Sal had ridden out the explosion with the rest of the crew, and now had the distinct pleasure of not being dead AND being on a ship that had a displacement worth fearing in the deep of space.

Defiant was a name that had been attached to battleships in Fiction and Reality over the Centuries. Ships of the name usually met one of two ends: A parade and museum refit, or a fireball on the front lines.

Sal began the process of hauling equipment to where the quartermaster had a station set up, and the many many signatures that were required to transfer the equipment that HAD been register to the destroyed Snakefighter, over the Defiant.

Not that they needed more rifles.

As he followed Max and the rest of the ground pounders toward their assigned barracks, Sal heard Robert wish to take on the 'Dragons'.

"Well we do have a snakefighter to pay for." Sal added, "But hey, we detonated the second deadliest thing on that boat, so Brass has give the LT a pat for that." He smiled as a little spriit de corps poked into his brain, Just something to ease the tension.

eyeballs acute oxygen starvation accident had caused the whole event to pass in a very interesting multicoloured blurr.
he was fairly certain that there had not been any magical pixies armed with small thermonuclear devices but to be honest this was the marine corp and they are very very resourceful so he was not prepared to rule it out completely.

it sounded like they high ups might be a little pissed about something, and maybe just maybe the pixies had been involved because there had been a very big explosion, eyeball decided that he would keep quiet and wait till morse gave him orders things seemed to work best that way.

There was no pity in Morse’s eyes. No regret, no acknowledgement of anything that they may have done. Some considered the use of Nuclear weapons as an extreme, even if they didn’t result in civilian casualties. But Morse was not among them. He believed in getting the job done, and he viewed all forms of secession as scum.

There were of course many nations on Earth, but Secessionists ignored the gifts and life that Earth gave them. And though the flag tied to his M56 Smartgun once represented Secession, it was now a point of cultural pride and nothing more to him. So when the weapon detonated and left the enemy destitute, Morse had little more on his mind then the wish that it had been more.

The call to secure the APC was something Morse was confused about as much as Sam. He didn’t feel like doing anything. He felt very at home on a Conestoga Class Cruiser, and thought the vehicle quite secure. He simply looked over at it. ”Secure it…” Morse echoed the order to Sam. ”Well that was easy.” He said with a shrug, not doing anything at all.

Later at the barracks he noted the desire for revenge amongst some others in the platoon. ”This operatin’ base’ll probably be set fer stagin’ a counter attack good n’ quick.” Morse pointed out. ”This kinda post aint gonna be much for sittin’ and defendin’.” He remarked regarding the operating position’s status so far away from Earth. ”This place is here fer one fuckin’ reason. To crush skulls, n’ do it ‘fore any political types can get word of it.” Morse concluded. He put his boot on a box a moment and tightened one of the laces. ”Seems like were finally in the right place.” He said with a smile, knowing they might get to do something that wasn’t shoot bugs in the middle of no where for once.

Sal let the shower wash off the mild stink that had accumulated in the short time that the group had been 'in action'. Honestly it had gone off better than it might. Sal imagined all sorts of scenarios where they might have been gassed or vented.

But nope: They were alive, and standing on friendly decking. Decking with decent headroom and enough firepower to bust all the way to bedrock. Sal smiled at the thought of that kind of ordinance.

The group had gotten that first taste of tactical nuclear detonation, but a vessel like the cruiser they were on would have multiple megaton scale warheads.

Morse's sentiments seemed to agree with everyone else's, when he mentioned politics Sal smiled.

"Hey, If the white collars get all hot and bothered about wiping 'em out," "I think I know a nice planet we can dump the crew of that freighter. Plenty of greenery, bit hard to breathe, and SOMETHING of a bug problem..." He lets the sentence hang, curious to gauge the groups reaction.

As the marines moved deeper into the bowels of the U.S.S. Defiant searching for the mess deck where they could stow their gear, Obi found himself sending a small pray towards the heavens as once again the platoon had nearly hit their credit limit at the bank of luck. Moving down along the passageway Obi followed the marine in front and smiled and gave a thumbs up to a few of the ship's crew as he moved passed them.

As they moved along Obi remembered what the group and called themselves and he Obi voiced his thoughts to the platoon.

"Hey guys, I know in all serious we got pretty damn luck there. However, for a group intent on killing us I was pretty disappointed in their choice of name. The Army of the Dragon Lords? Where do they come up with these. Sounds like someone likes really bad B - Grade 20th Century movies."

Saved.

They were saved. Oksana let her eyes close from the insane nearness of it all and let her head drop to Dmitri's shoulder for one self-indulgent second. His hand sank into her hair and he kissed her head. She gripped his hand, took a breath, and straightened again. Their eyes met, a single thought shared.

Understood.

And as the others started to move, so did she.

"I never doubted it," Oksana said, taking up the gear to shift it to the Defiant. "Thank you, Dirk. All of you."

Dmitri already carried a load of equipment in his lap, wheeling his chair toward the ramp. Oksana followed and deposited the gear where the Marines directed her to leave it. Once the gear was off-loaded, she and Dmitri took off to find E Deck, F Barracks for the amenities Dirk said would be waiting for them there. It was with a strange sense of déjà vu that she and her husband found themselves settled at yet another mess hall listening to the Marines grouse over the food.

Hadn't their day started out just like this? Oksana traded a silent look with Dmitri and she could see him thinking the same thing: when would the next attack come and from which quarter? Privately Oksana thought it would come from the Brass, from the political angle, but only time would tell.

Roberts nodded to Oksana as she thanked the marines. He didn't mind her; she was better than any other civilian they had been stuck with. At least she had the sense to try and help out instead of flying into a panic.

O800
Lt. Sixtus Quinn and Sgt. Dirk Pitt are escorted to the Ready Room for the meeting with Vice Admiral Burns and Lt. Colonel McGehee by Master Chief Gilmore. He leaves the two marines waiting outside the door and steps into the Ready Room.

"Admiral Burns, Lt. Sixtus Quinn and Sgt. Dirk Pitt are outside awaiting your orders sir," the Master Chief smartly saluted as he delivered the message.

A frown creased the forehead of the senior ranking officer onboard the USS Defiant. He took in a deep breathe; holding it slightly before exhaling. "Please escort Mr. Quinn in, Mr. Pitt is to remain outside."

"Sir' yes sir!" The Master Chief swiveled sharply pivoted on his heel as he exited the room.

"Lt. Quinn, you may enter the ready room," the Master Chief paused slightly' "however, Sgt. Pitt is to remain without." The Master Chief opened the door, stepping in and to the side allowing space for the Lieutenant to step within. Closing the door he stepped in front in parade rest.

With a cursury glance one can deduce from the rooms decorum that the Vice Admiral is by a books military man. Vice Admiral Burns is seated in the middle of a long table with four other individuals: Lt. Colonel Malcolm McGehee, a large black male with a receding hairline is seated to his left; to McGhehee's left a young blonde male with the rank of Captain sits; to the Admiral's Right the Captain of the USS Defiant sits, his gray hair cut short and a thin beard gives the symbolance of a neck; diminutive female with Commander ranks on her label sets to the Captain's right.
"Lt. Sixtus Quinn, you have been brought before this tribunal on the grounds of an Article 108, the destruction of Government Property. In this case the willful detonation of a nuclear device resulting in the scuttling of the Snakefighter assigned to the Easy Eight Company. As such Commander Soles will serve as Judge Advocate and Captain Agnew," he indicated the young marine to his left," shall serve as your defensive counsel. Do you have anything you wish to add at this time?"

Quinn nodded his thanks to the Master Chief, and gave a sideways look at Dirk before stepping through the hatch into the room beyond. A full panel was convened and Sixtus suddenly felt very foolish for not being in his Class A uniform at least, for it had been destroyed on the Snakefighter. At least his BTUs were new and freshly pressed with the creases still in them. Still, he stopped, saluted smartly and came back to attention after the salutes were returned.

When the Admiral read off the charges, Quinn's stomach sank in on itself, but he didn't let it show upon his face. As usual, it was cold and unreachable. If a horde of xenos couldn't make him crack, then he'd be damned if a handful of brass (of which he was one now, he had to remind himself) would make him sweat.

"Only that I would have a few minutes to confer with my counsel before the proceedings begin sir."
