Mission 1 Turn 1: Armageddon

Post by Corporal Hicks » Mon Jul 08, 2019 10:50 pm

Date: June 22, 2189
Location: U.S.S. Shiloh, Nembus System, Andromeda Cluster
Mission time: 00:10:00

Captain Murken spoke rapidly as he ran through all the protocols in his mind in a matter of seconds. “Enhance thrusters, another six points to port.”
“Aye Aye, Sir!” replied the Flight Officer. The cruiser listed further to port as it tried to avoid the imminent collision.

“All valid weapons systems engage.”
“Aye Aye, Sir!” replied the Weapons Officer. The cannons were charged and began to unleash fire on the merchant ship, this time the rounds struck her hull and tore fiery gashes across her surface. A sustained barrage would reduce her to a pile of slag, but the Shiloh would not have time to do so. She couldn’t bring her nose around in time to unleash the dreadful main cannons, and the range was far too close for nuclear missiles. The merchant ship continued on its course, unaltered.

Murken gripped his armrest until his hands were white, nothing he could do would stop that ship in time. “All non-essential crew evacuate immediately.”
“Aye Aye, Sir!” replied Lieutenant Blackstone...

The groggy marines barely had time to open their lockers before they heard the deep voice of Lieutenant Blackstone over the speakers. “All non-essential crew report to the nearest lifeboat immediately. All crew evacuate ship. This is not a drill.”

“Come this way, quickly,” said Bishop in his usual passive tone. The marines’ orders were clear; evacuate ship. They followed Bishop in a big herd, running down the hallway in boots, socks, or barefoot, depending on the individual level of preparedness. After two left turns, they found themselves in a lifeboat bay. They poured through the red-paint metal door. The craft was small and every inch of space was utilized. Bishop helped them strap into the wall seats, which clamped them in like sardines. As soon as they were stowed, he turned around and made for the exit.

“Where are you going?!” called Sergeant Major Sykes.
“I may be able to save more people,” replied the android passively as he exited the pod.

Captain Murken and the rest of the flight crew watched the other ship barreling towards them on the main view-screen. There was no further action to take, they had done everything in their power. A few junior officers bolted out of the Bridge, and Murken did not stop them. Instead he picked up his commlink and spoke to 2nd Lieutenant Nelson, who was stationed aft in case something happened to the Bridge.

“Lieutenant Nelson,” the Captain said in an even-keel voice, “I must ask you to take command of the Shiloh and her crew. I wish you the best of luck.”
“Aye Aye, Sir,” replied Nelson in a hesitant tone. “And good luck to you, Sir.”

The Bengal-Class merchant vessel slammed into the starboard side of the Shiloh with a rending crash. The Bridge and all nearby compartments were shattered by the force, and the precious air burst into space with a bang. The front of the merchant ship crumpled under the impact but it’s engines propelled it forward into the Shiloh. The Captain, the flight crew, and half of the souls aboard were killed instantly upon impact. The shrill, rending crash reverberated through the rest of the ship, popping eardrums and throwing people through the air like rag dolls. The artificial gravity vanished at the same moment, and most of the lights went out, replaced by red emergency lights.

The marines in their lifeboat felt like they were in a tin can being shaken by a giant. Blood vessels burst in their eyes, their bowels turned over, their jaws clenched and teeth chattered, many biting cheeks or tongues. Their eyes shut instinctively but the force jarred them open again. At least half of them blacked out.

The shaking, rending feeling continued but when it was in a low point, Danny Sykes managed to reach out and hit the big red EJECT button. The door sealed and then the horrible shaking stopped. Jaws and hands unclenched as they felt the relatively peaceful entry of the lifeboat into the atmosphere of the nearby planet. The explosive concussion of the two ships was unheard by their ears, deafened by the silence of space which lay between them.

After four minutes the intense shaking of atmospheric entry was climaxed with a percussive thump, and then everything was silent. Their ears were ringing and various parts of them were hurting, but they felt gravity’s kindly influence on them again, and the only motion was a sort of casual bobbing, like the feeling of a boat on a calm lake.

“All non-essential crew report to the nearest lifeboat immediately. All crew evacuate ship. This is not a drill.”
"oh shit, oh shit, oh shit" muttered Paulson like a mantra as he headed with the Dogs towards the nearest life boats, this was getting worse and worse.
<tag all>
Paulson scrambled through the hatch cover, still desperately clutching his weapon, as though is was some kind of comfort blanket. Other crew and marines where rushing all around him piling into the now seemingly tiny lifeboats. Paulson found a spot and started strapping himself in when he and all souls where rocked by a huge impact, the world shifted around him he was not secured properly an the last thing he heard was someone screaming "EJECT" before he blacked out.
An unknown time later he regained consciousness and looked around something floated past him, he stared at it questioningly, it was his helmet but helmets don't float, finally as his mushy brain ticked over he realized they were still in zero gravity, he grabed it and put it back on.
over the next few minuets the rest of the people who had blacked out where woken, Paulson did his best in zero gravity on small wounds stopping any bleeding, they had got off lightly , all seemed to have no serious injuries.
<roll first aid>
slowly a buffeting shook the descending pod as they began to enter the planets atmosphere it built and built this time everyone was strapped in Paulson still clutching his flammer like a child's toy, someone joked about a smooth ride, true this wasn't a combat drop but Paulson still had his worries about navy build quality.
suddenly retro thrusters kicked in and gravity returned, minuets later there was a large thump and all came to a hissing wheezing stop, kind of, now they where swaying which was very odd.
Paulson like the others around him unstrapped and prepared to leave this tiny life saving miracle he had no idea what had just happened but surprisingly he was alive and it looked like the dogs where all here as well. "Orders sarge? " Paulson questioned, finally spotting Morse within the group of survivors.

Just as soon as Morse had his gear together, weapon loaded, and combat load applied the call came overhead to evacuate. Morse had spent every waking second throwing his gear together in a dismal groggy state, that was almost incoherent. But that was fine, when he'd come to grips with everything he would be in full kit and ready to react. That was the plan, that was the training in the case of an emergency. He would not hesitate if action was needed. Whether it was a boarding party of insurrectionists or a critical failure that required emergency personnel to keep order, he and as many as he could get would be ready.

This was not his first evacuation either, but perhaps the first that had come so unexpected and without explanation. He did not question any of it, such things got people killed. He simply screamed orders and marked time to get the Marines moving after the synthetic that was getting them to a lifeboat. They slammed in, sealing themselves as best they could, but with no instruction other then to brace more or less. They were going to brace for a drop however, not for the hurtling crash that occurred.

The loss of gravity did its part to assist in softening some blow, but was horrific in terms the strain on the mind and body. Nerves felt like they were ripping apart as they spun in the room, strapped down as best as they could be as the hurtling craft launched the lifeboat to an unknown fate. The Gs were intense, and Morse fought as best as he could before his eyes went dark for nearly a minute. He came to feeling the same way he did when he got up. All was a faded nightmare that he was still living.

He breathed hard, attempting to slow it down to catch it and calm his heart rate. Whatever had just happened it was a mess that they would likely be recovering from for some time.

His eyes aggressively darting around amidst his perpetual scowl, Morse looked at Paulson who approached him. He bit down twice on his teeth, a reflexive action that followed his jaw jutting forward. After a brief consideration he looked to the Marine.

"Check yerself. If yer kickin' n' spittin'... find someone else'n check em fer the same." Morse directed.

<Tag Paulson

The fact was that there was a good chance that someone was either dead or soon to be with the trauma that had just occurred.

"Marines!" Morse bellowed as loudly as he could muster in his shaken state. "Sound off!"

"I'm alive," Dmitri answered Morse. But I won't enjoy it.

GOD, he ached. As landings go, it went. He wished it had perhaps been a little less abrupt, but hell, he'd suffered much the same plowing through troughs in 30 foot seas: the deck would reach up and smite you if you weren't hanging on tight to something. Dmitri threw off his straps and went from man to man in the tight quarters of the evac pod, checking to see if anyone needed Morse's attention.

"Pfc Paulson, no injuries to report" Paulsons voice wavered as he reported in, he listened to the others sound off to see if any required his limited aid abilities.

Preacher, disengaged himself from the straps and walked over to the console and quickly ran a diagnostic sequence.
"Lt. Sykes, analysis of our current situation and environment indicates that we have a limited time before this lifepod is no longer a viable option for us. The atmospheric reading indicates that the air is of tolerable levels albeit the Methane content is a a little on the high side. High levels of methane can reduce the amount of oxygen breathed from the air. This can result in mood changes, slurred speech, vision problems, memory loss, nausea, vomiting, facial flushing and headache. In severe cases, there may be changes in breathing and heart rate, balance problems, numbness, and unconsciousness. If exposure is large or continues for a longer period it can kill. I highly recommend limited exposure without full equipment."

Sixtus had barely made it to the escape boat with his armor and gear. Only weapon he had gotten was his sidearm which had been in his locker.

The escape boat pulled some serious G’s before zero-g took over with blessed relief.

Corporal Dimitri Barayev noticed that one of the marines was hanging limp in his wall seat. His head dangled forward in front of his chest, his face obscured by his crooked helmet.

Taking extreme care not to injure the Marine further, Dmitri put a bare finger on the man's neck to check for a pulse. He felt a beat. Was it his imagination? It bothered Dmitri that he didn't even know the Marine's name. The light armor the man wore obscured any nametags, so there was no reading it off his gear, and Dmitri was reluctant to pull the dog tags from under the Marine's shirt. If he jostled the man's neck and he had suffered a spine injury ... Yeah. Dmitri had experience with those. He wasn't a fan.

"Morse," he called out over his shoulder. "You should take a look at this one."

Turning back to the injured Marine, he said, "Hang in there, buddy. Help's coming."

Between the migraine and the impact of his unprotected head against the lifeboats minimal padding, Mark had very little recollection of the last fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes being all that had elapsed since his cryo-pod had hissed open high above the planet and the life-pod had impacted the surface of this planet.

The call to sound off permeated the haze around his senses. He heard a response with his name. That had come from him, his consciousness still struggling to keep up with what the rest of his brain was doing. The first voice seemed strange but familiar. It sounded like Morse' harsh, accented voice. But he wasn't with the Dawgs anymore. Was that the distortion from memory? No, wait, he'd seen them. He remembered the momentary exclamation of surprise, the sudden questions, and the ringing alarm that pushed all those questions to later. He decided to take comfort from the familiarity for the moment.

He took another deep breath, screwed his closed eyelids shut, then forced them open. The world was dark. He blinked trying to clear his vision. It was dark, his eyes hurt and... oh, right, the sunglasses. How had they managed to stay on after all that? He shook his head, deciding not to try and figure that mystery out. He closed his eyes again and took another deep breath. He was bruised to all hell and his head was throbbing, but all the muscles seemed to respond and nothing produced any sharp pains. He was not only alive but reasonably in one piece. At least, reasonable given everything the ship and lifeboat had just gone through.

Mark opened his eyes again and found himself looking at the very close face of another marine. He recognized the marine, Dmitri. He was one of the Devil Dawgs. They had served togeather for a short time before Mark had been injured. Mark nodded that he was indeed alright, and watched as the other marine continued his way down the line in the lifeboat.

Mark undid his own harness and hauled himself up to his feet. After taking a moment to steady himself, he headed off the other direction, trying to ignore the sounds of the medical emergancy behind him. There wasn't anything he could do for that but get in Morse or Quinn's way.

"Did we come down in the water?" he asked Preacher when he made it to the front. "Where are we? And how much time do we have left in this boat?"

<Lifeboat - present time>
Perez died. At least, he felt dead. Taking turns between short-time black-outs, caused by violent movements of the small lifeboat, vomiting and praying. Strapped tight into a seat, he barely managed to stay conscious, just to wait for "a", no wait, "the", path-of-light to appear, guiding him into his afterlife. What would it be like? Heaven or hell? No pain, no worries, no duties anymore? Or purgatory, endless torture, paying the ultimate price for his many sins?

None of it, of course. All of a sudden, the lifeboat calmed down, somehow. Opening his eyes, he realized it immediately. He could see it everywhere, hear it from every direction, feel it with every single nerve-cell of his tortured body, and smell it:

M-A-J-O-R
L-E-A-G-U-E
B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T
was going on.

So he calmed down, took a deep breath, and then he remembered, remembered what happend, since he tried to contact the USS Shiloh's bridge crew through the ships intercom, after being popped out of cryo in the midst of sweet dreams. He pressed the "replay button" in his mind ...

<USS Shiloh - half an hour earlier>
Fueled up with adrenalin, he smacked his fist into the electronic communication device in frustration. What the fuck was going on? Why did no one of the bridge crew answer? Are they sleeping or what? Are we getting boarded? Confused, he scratched the back of his head, realizing, that at least the past-hypersleep dizziness was gone and his body was "on-line".

A quick recon of the situation around him revealed ... chaos. And then the routine kicked in ...

"Private Cavalet, follow me"
... he barked and began to run down the corridor towards the armory, shouting at still dazed marines to make way or simply shoving them out of the way. Arriving at the armories heavy dura-steel framed door, he punched in the code into the small digit number field and the door opened. In a hurry, he grabbed a smart-gun case, followed by a M314 motion tracker device, and handed it over to Cavalet ...

"sling on"

Then he grabbed another smartgun case, slung it, and grabbed a box with ammunition, detachable drum magazines, and left the armory just in time. The speakers crackled, indicating a transmission and a deep bass-like human voice was heard ship-wide ...

“All non-essential crew report to the nearest lifeboat immediately. All crew evacuate ship. This is not a drill.”

Yeah, great, at least, no boarders to repel. Perez shouted to Cavalet "Down the corridor and then right, GO GO GO" and then they started running. Two minutes and some small injuries caused by running accidents later, they arrived at the escape and life boat section. He saw Danny Sykes boarding and instinctively took the same entrance, pushing Cavalet also in. He unslung his gear and put it into a secure equipment stash, after that he strapped himself into a safety harness and then ... all hell broke loose.

<Lifeboat - present time>
He reckognized now some of his fellow passengers, Morse, Sykes, but also new faces, he never had seen before. A synthetic said something about methande-related health problems. A marine called for Morse because of an injured person. As always, Perez displayed his usual calmness, sat back and observed first, before acting.

Corporal Nikolai Pushkin felt extremely nauseous after being jostled in the lifeboat, as well as the usual post-cryosleep nausea and the empty stomach. He had received a few minor lacerations from small pieces of debris, but he had the physique of a bear and he shrugged off the physical strain.

With the chaos of the quick wake-up from cryosleep and the collision, he hadn't had time to collect his thoughts. Now that he was stationary and not in immediate danger, his mind instinctively tried to catch up by reconstructing the events of the last twenty minutes. He recalled the orders over the loudspeaker, though he wasn't sure if he had comprehended them on a conscious level at the time. His experience in the military had driven him to obey orders almost as instinct. Looking down, he saw that he had apparently dressed in his combat armor with his gear and weapons. With slight embarrassment he realized his hands were shaking from the adrenaline leaving his system.

The first thing he noticed that wasn't a direct order was the marine Dimitri who asked if he was okay. He nodded and recognized the Russian accent that matched his own. "I am fine, I just need shot of vodka to kill the pain," he replied in a friendly tone, his own baritone Russian accent quite noticeable.

"If I had known we were going on a picnic," Dmitri said, smirking. "I would have packed some. As it is, we'll just have to make do with whatever Morse has on him."

Ugh. Just the thought of it made Dmitri grimace. To each his own.

The Marines were, in words, beat to hell. The reentry into the atmosphere had been severe and miserable. Crashing and bashing them both inside and out and there was no real way to tell what the organization still held for them as they regained mobility. Morse, while medic and squad leader, was prepared for both handling injuries and administering whatever leadership was necessary in that moment, but his brain was equally frazzled as many were.

He started to hear the marines sounding off as they came too, but it was just as dazed and short sounding as he had been. The Russians, Quinn, Giosso, Paulson, the robot, all up and functioning. That was good. But there were others that weren't. Dmitri noted someone needed a looking at, and Morse had seen them himself.

He took that time to move over to the downed marine. Sgt. Cano. Equal rank, but now incapacitated. Morse could not tell why but his eyes were bloodshot and he had veins that were wretching out in his head that gave him the immediate impression that the pressure was really bad and his vessels couldn't take it.

"Right, it's up time you sleepy fuck." Morse muttered at the Marine, grabbing his medical scanner to get a firm reading on him. The scanner upon hooking it up to the mans arm immediately verified his suspicion of a burst vessel, and he began to administer a drug that would thin his blood to pass more easily but would also treat the vessel. There was no real way to tell how well it work or if more operation was needed... but Morse was not a surgeon... he stopped bleeding and stabilized wounds... if he was surgeon he wouldn't be there in the Corps and would be making millions off world.

< Roll Medical

Morse looked back up. Not hearing any immediate orders, but needing the group to continue motion and prep for mobility. He heard comment they might be on water, or that they had at least stopped. Whatever the case they needed to get a move on.

"Start snaggin' and grabbin' gear." Morse ordered. "Combat loads and weapons ready." He directed while running his scan.

"Ruskies, gear salvage, grab it all and get it ready to move." Morse directed to Dmitri and Pushkin, his deep southern accent piercing his insensitive terminology.

< Tag Dmitri and Pushkin

"Giosso, Paulson. Figure out the where we are n' what we got goin' outside." Morse continued his direction.

<Tag Gioso and Paulson

Morse, recognizing Quinn was there, looked to him, knowing his medical knowledge may have surpassed his own.

"Quinn, check this guy... I don't know if he needs operatin' or if a comas the new operatin' standard for him."
