Turn 8: Joint Operation (Marines)

Post by Corporal Hicks » Sun May 24, 2020 8:10 pm

A loud but passively calm robotic voice broke through the loudspeakers: “Warning. Potential hull breach in Life Support Section C. All nonessential personnel are required to evacuate this section and report to your designated safety zones.”

The Marines had to listen to this repeating in their ears as they hurried the last hundred meters to the station’s bridge. As they drew to the end of the corridor, they heard a shouted challenge from a doorway ahead. “Halt! Who goes there?!”

“United States Colonial Marines, Special Forces Recon Unit designated ‘Devil Dawgs,’ Sergeant Major Sykes commanding!” barked Sykes in reply. As the Marines entered the bridge, they passed sixteen heavily armed and armored policemen locked and loaded with assault weapons. Their faces were obscured by the black gas masks that they wore. Several of the policemen nodded at them as they passed. There was sometimes rivalry between different branches of military and law enforcement agencies, but all of that was forgotten at the moment. All of the people who wanted to save Gaia Station were united in one common cause.

The Marines found themselves in a fairly impressive command room with two dozen people occupied in various urgent tasks. The wounded policemen were taken for medical treatment, and the Chinese prisoner was taken away to his grisly interrogation.

Two important looking older men approached them, and both shook the hands of Sykes and his Sergeants. One wore an expensive-looking tailored suit and tie. The other wore a police dress uniform with numerous commendations on the left breast. He spoke: “Welcome to Gaia Station, Marines. My name is Edmund Lowe, Chief of Police. This is Herman Frazier, Colonial Governor of Gaia Station. We have no time for formalities, so I will get straight to the point. Life support is down, but I’m told that the Navy is working on a solution in the next few minutes. We have to act on the assumption that they will succeed.” It was clear enough what he meant; if they fail than we are all fucked anyway.

“I’m sorry to say that we have bigger problems to deal with. Engineering has gone completely dark. We are unable to contact the engineering staff and systems are starting to suffer failures. If we don’t get things back online, the whole station could plummet into the planet's atmosphere, and us with it. We sent in a team of police to deal with the situation and we lost contact with them too.”

“Here are your orders. You are to force entry into engineering through the starboard bulkhead. My police attaché will assault through the port bulkhead in coordination with your men. You will escort our engineers in safely so that they can reengage the station’s engines and equilibrium. I want you to command the joint operation, Sykes. We will remain here for as long as we can and coordinate the evacuation of all civilians. I am committing all of my reserves here Sergeant Major. Don’t let me down!”

They exchanged hurried salutes and Sykes turned to his Marines. “Staff Sergeant Morse, you have command of the Devil Dawgs. Choose a replacement for First Squad’s leader. I will be overseeing the joint operation. Okay, people, move out!” The Marines, police, and engineers began to move out on the next stage of their horrifying adventure.

Tanya had a slight look of surprise when they mentioned they were going to the engineering bay as opposed to the living quarters, but she tried to hide her expression soon after so that Sykes might not catch on.

She checked on her SHARP rifle and swapped out the clip with a full one just in case they ran into trouble ahead. She felt one of the bullets in her gloved hand. It was cylindrical and a little larger than a fountain pen. The prototype weapon fired it as a sort of ‘dart’ with an explosive tip on the end. After hitting its target, it would wait one second before detonating to allow maximum penetration.

She tried to resist feeling her injured knee again. It was painful as hell but she knew she could get through it (as long as she got out of this larger mess.) She glanced over at Dimitri Barayev. “Ya dumal, chto my idem v zhilyye pomeshcheniya. Ya slyshal, kak bol'shiye parni upominali o problemakh tam.” She nudged him to make sure he didn’t give it away.

Henniger filed off the bridge with his platoon. The cops seemed motivated enough. This Op had gone pretty well under the circumstances for him and 1st Squad at least.

He caught up with his squad leader and sidled up to him.

"Corporal," he began. "You trust these civvies? I'm good for running point if someone needs a break."

This was winding up being a series of firsts for Morse. While he had been tactically in charge of the platoon before, this was the first time that he was doing it in conjunction with an attachment of something other then marines. It was just as strange that they were the majority of the force that they would be bringing to bare. But the fact that they were going to have to force their way in with such an overwhelming force gave Morse a feeling of unease.

"Why'd we need so many for kickin' in a door?"

The thought was not the first time he was left to question something that they were doing, but it was still a strange process. He could not speak to the quality of these police other then being tactically covered hired guns. They may not have much training other then how to pretend to be a real army, but that had yet to be seen. Morse was still not willing to make a judgement just yet, and instead opted for moving towards the orders.

"Roger." Morse replied to Sykes when he was handed control.

Morse came back around to the Marines, and addressed them quickly.

"Take a breath, take a drink, n' git ready to move. Shits breakin' n' were moving in fuckers who'll fix it. Anyone fires on us, cut em down. We're kickin' in the door and gettin' shit right on this orbiting slab. Quinn, you're takin' first squad."

Morse overheard a relatively new Marine, Henniger, mutter a willingness to take point.

"Today's yer lucky day, Henniger." Morse noted. "You take point. Keep eyes open n' don't hesitate if you got a confidence that somethin' needs to die." Morse directed.

Morse looked to the police. "You cops divide to squads a 4 n' keep to the center. We take fire, you take cover in provide coverin' fire. If we get to the door, we blow it n' you kill everything you see same as the rest of us. If aint no one got more questions, were movin'."

Morse was ready to move and unsure of what they would see, but would be ready for whatever it was.

((OOC: Sorry for the wait, TPO Tanya. My youngest graduated HS today and the entire two weeks prior has been ... hectic with last minutes stuff. But we made it! WOOT!))

I thought we were going to the living quarters. I heard the big guys mention problems there, Dmitri heard Sokolva mutter to him. He just gave her a wry smile and offered a verbal shrug: "Plans have changed. Golova v der'me. Chto yeshche novogo?"

Head first in the shit. What else is new?

"Don't worry. Our shovels are big enough to dig us out." Dmitri took stock of his remaining ammunition and made sure his rifle was fully loaded. Once the order to move out was given, he moved out.
