Turn 2 - Morning of the Incursion

Following the overly eager marines to the scene of the gunfire, Jacob saw the blood pooling under the door and thought only one thing...

'Green'

He closed his eyes and already he knew what had happened.

"Eric, you know how to perform last rites? I suggest you get to it..."

Looking at this marine he'd not met before, a medic apparently about to kick the door down Jacob nodded "Kick it down, but I don't think your first aid is gonna help..."

Coughing he remembered his first mission where he and Green had stormed the house of cultists, then the mission after, where Green's mental health had gone considerably downhill...

He tipped a salute at the place the pool of blood was eminating from and turned on his heel, walking from the toilets.

"Inform the LT and any other brass hanging around..." He called to nobody in particular...

lighting a cigarette he blinked hard and gritted his teeth....marines don't cry

Eric kicked the bathroom door open, and dropped his smartgun at the door, seeing the small size of the room. He pulled out his VP70 pistol and walked up next to Private Simovic, and saw the blood pooling out from under the stall door.

A jolt went through his brain like electricity, and he felt like he was going to faint. He hadn’t been expecting to see anything else like this for a long time. Now he was sick to his stomach. He realized this must be the man who’d rushed past him. He almost threw up all over the floor, but held it in.

In what seemed like far away, he heard his name, but didn’t understand what whoever it was had said to him. He put the pistol back into its holster, staggered out of the bathroom, fell to his knees in the grass, and vomited out his breakfast. He didn’t understand, he’d never been bothered by gore before. This was just blood that he’d seen, and in college he’d seen a car accident where the person was mangled horribly, and it hadn’t bothered him this much. That was before the other thing he’d seen though.

He stood up, dazed, and noticed Sergeant Honeysett walking away from the bathroom. He saw the look on Honeysett’s face, and almost felt it again himself. This man was something to Honeysett, he could tell. He knew better then to try and comfort him now, it hadn’t done anything for him. He spat the taste of vomit out of his mouth.

Then he remembered his smartgun, and went back to the bathroom door to pick it up, then he wandered off, in a similar direction as Honeysett, making sure nothing happened. The others would all be focussing on Green for a while, he thought he’d better keep an eye on the Sarge. He flicked the safety of his smartgun back on, spitting again and forcing as much thought as he could out of his brain, but an image from a year ago was locked in it now, and it made him want to die.

Coming up on the toilets, Erik's mindset changed. Seeing the marines present, his battle-readiness faded. He was new, but he had heard enough of this group to know that if there was a security situation, this is far from the behavior he would see. Holstering his weapons, he soon figured out what was going on, and an equally powerful response took hold. “This is not a warrior’s death,â€

Simovic crossed himself, he'd never really spoke to Green as the platoons had only just met up, but he had noticed that he was the only other marine that was bigger than him, the guy was huge (however minus most of his head now).

Simovic spoke over his comms "I don't think theres any real point getting a medic down here now, this man is dead as Dillenger, I suggest the Military Police are informed as they may want to investigate the scene". Simovic knew it was pretty certain he'd commited sucide, locked cubicle door, his hand still holding his smoking VP70, all pretty conclusive".

Damn Simovic should have got his parents to light a candle for each member of 9th platoon as well....

The service was simple and efficient. His body was removed and processed in a cold and sterile way, but that is how things have to be done. Following orders from his closest friends Sergeants Nick Steel and Jacob Honeysett, his death would be officially listed as KIA, but off the records everyone of the Easy Eights and the Delta Dogs would know the truth. As his former sergeant, and one who perhaps knew his family the best Nick Steel would be absent from the upcoming mission as he traveled with Green's Body to his family. Once they arrived in system, Nick would break the news to the Greens. As expected the family took it hard, albeit the father was very stoic about it. In order to hide the evidence of the suicide the body was not viewed by the family, the excuse being that it was mangled beyond recognition and it was recommended that the body be cremated.
On the day of the service, a local Marine Color Guard presented colors and under the leadership of Sergeant Nicholas Steel the flag was removed from the place of honor beside the Urn containing the ashes of Lance Corporal Ronald Green (according to his records Green had been due a promotion at the end of the current month) and folded with crisp clean movements and presented to his mother and father.
Kneeling on one knee before the seated grieving family Sergeant Steel spoke the following words:
"On the behalf of the President, his Country, and his fellow brothers and sisters in arms, I would like to present this flag to you in honor of Lance Corporal Ronald Green's exempliary service while serving as a member of the United States Colonial Marines."
At this point Sergeant Steel stood up and saluted the family, pivoting on his right foot he turned to the color guard who at this time had raised replica M-14 rifles to their shoulders. The order was barked out and while a lone bugler played taps, the three members of the rifle team fired seven consecutive shots into the air.
At his request Sergeant Steel would remain on Earth for an extended time period. This loss in a string of losses for Nick was a little more than he was willing to handle at this time and wish for a Leave Of Absence in order to visit with family and friends and to collect himself before returning to active duty.
With the vacancy caused by Sergeant Steel's request, 2nd LT Morrison is forced to evaluate his current platoons and makes two field promotions, Lance Corporal Bojan receives a field promotion to Sergeant and Lance Corporal Khan would move to the vacant spot as Squad Leader in the Easy Eights. Morrison himself would enter the tunnels with the Easy Eight's 2nd Squad and Sergeant Honeysett would follow in with the Delta Dog's 2nd Squad.
