Turn 5 Ascending - Delta Dogs

Post by Nick » Mon May 21, 2007 4:46 pm

The deltadogs worked their way slowly up towards the north-west tunnel. The walls where still very smooth, here and there small chips of rock had fell out. There where also white scratchmarks on the rocks.

The wind howled and moaned around them softly, the winds where not very strong but still present. Suddenly something crashed in front of them, it sounded like a thud followed by smaller rattling sounds.

The tracker woke up and signalled three or four contacts for the fraction of a second and then went black.

After a few seconds a handful small pebbles came rolling towards them on the tunnel floor.

Hearing the pebbles scatter, Jacob reacted fast, his blood was pumping and all of his senses were heightened. It was at this point he knew that the pills he'd taken before the mission had kicked in.

Feeling the heady buzz of amphetamine he quickly and sharply ordered "Send a sheet of flame up that tunnel now, I want to burn out or illuminate anything up there." he lit a cigarette and smoked, he felt jittery and nervous - but at the same time fully aware and focused, it was an odd feeling and one he hadn't had for a couple of years since he was a younger teenager...

Smiling to himself he felt himself grinding his teeth and winced, still - there was a price to pay for the potential in-combat-effectiveness this drug may offer...

Wrathboyne had froze in place when heard the pebbles.

"Send a sheet of flame up that tunnel now, I want to burn out or illuminate anything up there."

Upoun hearing the order, Wrath started scooting back down the tunnel with his back to one of the walls and his sidearm in hand. His eyes where straining to make out any moving target.

After moving about 5 feet below the trooper about to douse the area with flames, he takes notice where all the other mairnes are realizing his medic skills may be tested soon.

Joe heard the order and felt his adrenaline surge. He instinctively dropped to his knee and sent a burst of flame right down the center of the tunnel. As the flame leapt from the nozzle of the gun, Joe's eyes darted around the flickering light and shadows for any sign of a threat.

As the sheet of flame billowed forth, Jacob whipped his head around - he couldn't stay still - and decided to use his new energy productively, remembering the spaceship, those confined corridors - not too dissimilar to these caves...still, they'd come through the floor and the walls before, reaching out he touched the stone beside him tentatively. It felt solid enough...and well they'd been treading on the stone floor enough for him to realise it probably was as it seemed.

Still he tried to listen out above the whoosh of the incinerator for anything that he wasn't meant to be hearing. all the while his eyes flitting around to look for anything amiss...

"Move up behind the flames, I don't want to linger...not at all" Jacob couldn't tell himself whether this order was born of his chemically induced energy, or for a geniuine desire to not let the jaws of a trap close around him. Sure they were only chitinous oversized insects...but they'd seemed a...a little too aware of what was going on and what to do for his liking.

The ball of flame rolled away in the darkness with a hissing roar. For a moment bathing the tunnel in a warm orange light. Nothing there.

"I didn't see anything," Joe said shocked. "So what the hell made that noise?" Joe finished his thought as he got back on his feet. Once up, he pointed his shoulder light around the tunnel to reassure himself that there was actually nothing there to see. Slightly spooked by the unexplained sound Joe moved forward again even more alert than before. As he walked, he held his breath for a second to listen to the noises in the tunnel. He did his best to pick out something other than the sound of their boots on the ground and the clicking and rustling of their equipment as they moved.

There was very faint sounds. It sounded like...gunfire. After a few seconds it faded into the moaning of the wind. Part from that nothing could be seen or heard.

"Eighth encounter hostile Honeysett it disappeared on them. Rignon you better keep an eye open back there." He lets the platoon know as he adjusted his comm to platoon frequency. "We just shooting at ghosts here we are moving onward." As he says this he unloads the grenades in his launcher and switches them for the shotgun shells. As soon as it is loaded he locks it back and fires one off at the ceiling ahead just to make sure it was clear. Having switched back to their platoon's frequency. "Don't forget guys these things like to climb walls and ceilings." Shouldering his rifle he waits for them to lead on.

"We aren't shooting at ghosts Wrench, we're shooting as a cautionary and to provide a bit of light down here. And please don't fire at the ceiling, if one of us gets killed by a ricochet I won't be impressed, also..." and here Jacob dropped his voice to a lower pitch "it might scare the fresh meat" he snapped his head back round

"Ok marines, there's just been contact with the eighth...and the critter got away, so eyes open guys - I don't want this thing running through us snapping and bleeding acid over us. remember, we are to conserve ammo, so shoot accurate and shoot clever, they have fairly large heads - so a bit of careful aiming - and we'll obliterate them. Stay keen! Now let's move forward!"

Turning forward he started to move forward, his jaw was beginning to ache from the grinding...

"Another thing, see anything no matter how small, that might be important speak up! Better safe than dead!"

Grinning a little maniacally, Jacob turned to the marine with a glint in his eye, "There's only one way to find out, eh?" leaving the sentance hanging uncomfortably in the air he stepped forward, almost expecting to fall into the jaws of an who lay hidden beneath the rock.

A bead of sweat trickled down the side of his face, he hadn't realised how tense he felt previously - he fumbled for a cigarette and lit one. His zippo lighter, dented slightly from hitting that cultist's head what seemed like a lifetime ago, had the markings of the card the ace of spades on it. Smiling at it's familiarity - the way it nestled in his hand and the familiar chink as it opened and shut. He'd had it for years...and had designs on making it a family heirloom should he live long enough to have children. It was reason enough to will himself through this mission he thought.

Slipping the lighter back into a secure pocket he moved again, just waiting for contact, wishing something would break the overbearing tension and silence...

"There's only one way to find out, eh?"

Wrathboyne forces a smile , "As long as it is not me --- not in the mood for shutes and ladders."

Feeling a bit overwhelmed Wrath begins quietly humming a tune he learned in basic. "Milky Way Women" This deep undergound expidetion was begining to wear on his nerves.
