Man...some of these posts make me feel so OLD...:)

I'm 35; living on the East Coast of the U.S. I'm a Navy brat (Dad's a retired officer); and I'm currently working for the government.

Unlike the vast majority of on-line gamers I know; I'm really not that into computer games or anime; so upwards of 75% of all kinds of references are way over my head...'course, then I drop some old school RPG (as in the pen and paper kind!) on them and they usually have NO clue as to what I'm talking about!

My number one hobby is all kinds of games: RPGs, board games, card games (as in Poker/Blackjack, etc.; not Magic and Game of thrones CCG, etc.)....the hobby has taken a huge hit over the past year with the arrival of our 1st child; but I'm just now starting to get a bit of time to come back to it! :)

who's with me on this?

I'll second that. Though if you like red sand, cold beer and lots of european girls backpacking, then Darwin is not tht bad at all. :)

Hey its returning a favor mates!

My dad and godfather met while both were in their respective Navies (USN/RAN). Somehow they ended up drinking in a bar together and had to take each other's backs in a fight. Then they played port tag over the next few years, hitting the town if their ships happened to port at the same place.

Well Steve (my godfather) made it a thing to come and visit the us in the US and he'd drag along friends and his parents. Later when he was married in Perth he sent us invites but I was gearing up for my deployment to Japan and couldn't go. So I figure its a favor. I know Darwin isn't "the spot" but at this point, being away from where I'm at is always better...

Euro girls? :o

That is awesome. I have quite a few mates in the USN and we often play port tag as well, especially when we have the major exercises both off Australia and Hawaii.

Darwin is a real haven for the backpackers. A lot of them head up there for the seasonal work, so plenty of eye candy to go around the place. Don't pay any attention to Rednus, they usually ditch the European guys when they get over here. :)

Ah, I love backpacker girls. :P

I'll have to write a book then:

"A Yank in Aus: Euro Girls, Digger Girls, and a Backpack of Dreams."

Okay not quite that.

Regardless, should be about next year, I had to give up my vacation money to fly home for a funeral. And I decided that this summer I'm hiking Fujisan. But I plan on a foray to "Down Under" before I leave the WESTPAC.

Does anyone understand this LARP thing?

couldn't they just go paintballing like the rest of us?

To me, the idea of *not* hitting each other while yelling numbers, seems a bit pointless.

/just sayin', (dont *not* hit me and scream "TWENTY!" or anything...) ;D

-Red. / Does Kendo, no padding, full wooden Bokken. Does not yell numbers.

Is this ok?

Image

Apparently people who don't know reenacting are quick to compare it to LARP. Which yeah its similar but I've done an equal amount of private "tacticals" as I have public "living histories" where I've had some loooong talks with veterans and learning more about WW2 (Korea and Vietnam) myself from first hand sources.

No, no. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind military re-enactments.

Its the adults in home-made wizards outfits throwing imaginary fireballs and guys in t-shirts with cardboard swords that I don't understand.

"I threw majix at yoo, it duz 127 HP, so yor dead !"

-That kind of thing.

-Red. /is gonna fly to the states and bring an Airsoft rifle to a LARP game.

(kbeir, I didn't post anything in response to your re-enacting stuff, I just saw some show called 'Monster camp' or something, and couldn't understand a damn thing)

No I get you.

But the intense stuff for me is the crazy Russian's STALKER/Fallout LARPs. Oh yeah and German Shadowrun LARPs (both of which I think use airsoft :D )...

And I've seen some pretty intense fantasy LARPs.

But still, its a hobby that evades my comprehension when taken to the sort of level you talk about.

I'd rather order some pizzas, sit down with some soda and beer and chill back and toss some dice. Geeky but I don't go out and play the "half-way" version...

Google translated for everyone's convenience, I dunno who knows Russian. Same group did a ridiculous level Fallout LARP.

Apparently they have skilled set makers and makeup artists/costumers. I mean at this point you are putting on a movie. The German Shadowrun groups rolled at least a few fan films in the late 90's/early 00's.
