So ive recently taken up boxing, in an attempt to get fit and because sparring is just so damn fun!

I was wondering if anybody here had any experience or any pearls of wisdom to impart..

Don't get hit.

In all seriousness though, keep on practicing, as much as possible. Listen to your boxing instructor and actively try to implement the advice they give you.

Keep your hands up....ALL THE DAMN TIME! :)

If you're willing to take hits....which, is NOT sound strategy as Quinn has allready pointed out :)...learn how to counter-punch.....most boxers would rather get into a hug contest with a Bear than box somebody who hits them every time they hit the guy....seriously, counter-punching is so non-intuitive that its downright frigtening to go up against....

Best of luck amigo.....and oh yeah....KEEP YOUR HANDS UP! :)

I've done a little boxing myself-it's fun.

But in all due seriousness-like our friend maxi said learn to counter punch-I've taken more than a few hits and returned the favor-sure scares the hell outta people when they realize that you aint afriad to get hit in order to dish some out.

But then again-I've never really placed much value on my own well being.

Very little pure boxing sparring, not nearly enough to even think of advicing someone else. I do have the 5th level in the KMS Krav Maga system, but KMS strictly uses open palm strikes.

I do however have extensive experience in real world fights - As an police officer I can share three golden rules.

1) Do not box with a boxer

2) Do not grapple with a grappler

3) Do not fuck with the police

Follow these simple rules and you will avoid getting your ass kicked royally. ;D

I've fucked with the police-a friend of mine's dad was a cop- we used to set off firecrackers and everyone would start thinking it was gun fire and he'd get called down. Nearly blew a gasket a couple of times.

I've boxed against a boxer-and pulled a move from some other martial arts style-or aimed a punch at his lower body. Grapleing, throw the sumbitch across the room.

Have you ever grappled? Throwing the "sumbitch across the room" is nowhere near as easy as that...

arguably if your against a boxer and used moves from another martial art then you aren't really boxing with him, are you? ;-)

Yeah-but I cheat in a fight. As for the grappling thing-I've practiced some judo in addition to various other fighting styles. You know-bits and peices I've picked up from friends and actual instructors over the years.

It keeps me outta trouble-or gets me outta it.

Granted, if you're in an actual street-fight, use every dirty trick you have to make sure you come out of it alive. That's just a given right there. And as Morse said, go for the balls. But make SURE you follow that up with something. Break the nose, side-kick to the knee to break it, box the ears, just make sure they can't get back up and pound on you.

Been in martial arts for a long time. Love the throws and being thrown. Learning how to land safely after being thrown/falling is one of the most useful skills I've ever picked up.

Yeah-I've been in thouse situations-I recently learned a type of chinese martial art after seeing someone use it-Don't remember what its called-but you use your arms like whips.

And on the combo thing-I sometimes open up with boxing or karate, then totally swtich styles. Throws people off.
