Yay; back to non-court-martial adventures! :)

I just wanted to make a quick note that current U.S. Marine Warrant Officers are typically called "Gunners" (not officially; it's an old traditional title) and it's been pretty well established that the USCM has a lot in common with the USMC; so you (Pale) may want to consider if this tradition remains.

On the other hand; it's well established that I'm a big fan of trying to make the USCM of the 2180s different that the modern day military; so please go with whatever you want.....I will say though that I DO like the idea of calling Warrant Officer Quinn "Gunner" Quinn. :)

And that's different from "Gunny", right? My Dad was Master Gunnery Sergeant (E-9) when he retired in '76. He'd actually turned down a wartime commission to Warrant Officer TWICE, because it would have been a drop in pay relative to his then-current rank and it would have put him lower on the totem pole (Officer-wise) than the position he then had as an enlisted. He also told me that the commission wasn't supposed to be permanant. I can see the pros and cons to accepting/declining the promotion, but personally I think he made the right choice.

Yes; "Gunny" is for Gunnery SGTs (E-7s) and "Master Guns" or "Master Gunny" is for Master Gunnery SGT (E-9s.....which are also SGT MAJors....confusing enough yet? :) )

Warrants are just called "Gunners" as "Gunner Johnson says hello"; etc.

As for NCOs (ESPECIALLY senior NCOs) that take commissions (they're known as "mustangs" in the Navy); I've always felt they shouldn't have to start at the O1 level....at LEAST make them O2's or something.....although; people DEFINITELY treat them much different than a brand new "butterbar" (O1) right out of the Academy/ROTC/OCS

If I recall Dad's explanation correctly, there comes a point in the promotion ladder where you can choose to go down a path that ends with Sergeant Major or the other ending with Master Gunnery Sergeant. My dad chose the latter. I think it had to do with MsGSgt involved less politicking and paperwork (though I'm not sure how or by how much less it was). Dad was more hands on and preferred to be where the men were doing stuff.

Mind, he told me this when I was 10 or so, nearly 40 years ago, so don't quote me on it! XP
