I think the secesh would appreciate that very much! >:D

It's hard for me to not have my character hate the secessionists but that would be too much like my actual self, and I try to keep myself and my character somewhat different. I had five ancestors in the Union Army after all...

I like to function with a lot of irony for that, given that Morse has a confederate flag on the side his smartgun.

But I just wanna take a second to point out we're not talking about a parallel in the same way that something like Firefly did. - Secessionists in the Aliens universe are generally trying to split away from Earth Control, since its ruled by Corporates, in favor of a more fascist / communist system.

I was kidding guys. If there were similarities to the American Civil War I would have found them and obsessed on them. I am after all a military historian with an emphasis on the Civil War.

Pale Rider I know you're from the South, but I suppose I can forgive you ;D
Just kidding please don't kill me

I'm a Marylander; so I'm only Northern in the sense that the Union Army occupied the state and pretty much wouldn't allow it to secede due to D.C.'s location....but I'm glad they did...otherwise me being a pale-faced and married to an African-American woman (as in born in Africa and came to the U.S. as a child and took the oath to become an American citizen at 18); and having a child would make life VERY uncomfortable had the Union not won! :)

As for the secessionists in the game; I tend to think of Sam as more than a little split on how to feel about them....one the one hand; she's a Marine; and she'll do her duty; on the other hand; she's from a Colony herself; and most of these disputes would seem to really fall down on "is this fracas affecting the Company's bottom-line"; as the Corporates seem to be the real power both on Earth and abroad. In the end; it's just about standing up for your fellow squad/platoon mates....not worth trying to drum some kind of hatred for the opposition; as there's really nothing there that would stand up to any kind of logical examination.....except for perhaps rare instances of some Colony revolt being conducted in some kind of 'terror-campaign' fashion. But then; I'm playing a bit of a naive idealist character! :)

I'm in So-Cal now, but I'm the first generation not born in Texas, so that answers itself.

I'm not particularly saying that the Colonist argument is wrong (Out of Character that is). They essentially are the victim of whatever the Corporate's tell them, which could wind up completely screwing them over. - Essentially they just have the same argument that the U.S did.... "Why are we taking orders and abuse from people who are months away." - Only the means they go through can fluctuate.

Technically we are the Imperialist, Corporate puppets they accuse us of being... so I like to revel in and play ignorant.

Hicks, I know you know and I was basically harassing you.

I think that as we play out this turn we will be writing history so to speak. There is very little to go on as far as I have discovered where the Secessionists are concerned. The conflict that I am relating it most closely to is the Vietnam War. But that means we are the Viet Cong and NVA. Forcing our propoganda driven views down their throats. However, yo will also note some American Revolution in there as well. My two favorite Historical Empires are the Romans and Mongollians, so I may even blend some aspects of them into the military.

Roberts isn't forgiving them for the snakefighter incident. Loyalty to friends is often what drives armies.

I don't know where you guys got all this information about the secessionists. Maybe they were mentioned in an earlier campaign or something. I'm just viewing them as the enemy.

I'm digging the Vietnam genre elements Pale; thanks! I too am a big believer in relating the movie more to the Vietnam era as opposed to more modern conflicts and like Hicks; I'm pretty much just playing Sam as thinking of them as the 'the enemy'; with no real malice or hate; just a Professional doing a job.

Damn colonies...

*cough*NothingToDoWithBeingBritish*cough*

=P, anyway from what I remember from the extended universe of Aliens there aren't really territories left on earth persay after WW3 between the West and Eastern Empire, it pretty much decimated them. Colson as a character isn't really the patriotic kind. He's proud of his heritage but in the quiet kind of way, not going to start wearing a flag or the like, just rolls his eyes at Morse's comments.

I took the easy option to start and project some of myself into the character. Although I'm guilty of poking fun at Americans/America sometimes, such as my friend proudly proclaiming the oldest building in his town was now 150 years old. I couldn't help but point out my local pub was older, much much older. It's only ever meant as a light hearted jest, so please dont' take anything I say like that to heart. (because it'll happen eventually when these kinds of discussions pop up, oh look, it already did =P )

Well, if everyone is going to put it out in the open I might at as well get on with it.

Canadian here. I'm going to do my utmost not to spam the board with apologies. Promise.

What any of this has to do with sentry guns and trees is beyond me.

Naturally has turned into a much broader question on our thoughts on the Campaign, our characters, and the universe.

I too am digging the Vietnam era vibe, but I see us on a very different side then 'NVAs'

America baby. My advanced technology, and training are gonna give you that democracy you've never known you wanted... one bullet at a time.

Given that I had no skill ranks with flamers during that debacle, I think things went quite well.

I mean, Ripley worked a flamer alright. Hell she did that with one duct taped to a rifle!

Course Ripley had points in Big Damn Heroine saved up so... there's that.
