M1T3 - The brief

Post by Nick » Fri Oct 30, 2009 10:12 pm

2179 AD, 1st November
Location: Sol system, Earth, atlantic ocean, aboard the USS Arcana

The briefing room was made for pilot briefings, for when they had been stationed aboard the USS Arcana. The room itself was not particularly big and big bulkheads and raw piping clad the low ceiling. The floor itself was inclined towards the podium at the front and six five seat rows of worn down chairs filled the cramped room.

The Marines had dumped their duffel bags in the sparta living quarters in the belly of the ship. The large carrier stamped and rattled in the rought sea - The rolling motions were minimal due to water foils that stuck out from the side of the ship.

A few of the marines felt quesy in the cramped and rolling ship and as they gathered for the briefing some of them had already paid a visit to the lavatory to throw up.

Lt Moore stood at the podium when the marines, some ash faced, strolled in. Sergeant Simovic was first there and silently counted the heads as the marines came in. The ship shuddered and Lt Moore grabbed the podium as the ship heaved itself upright. The propellors went free from the water and a rumbling staccatto was heard as they worked through air before dipping into water and getting grip again.

Ten minutes later the marines were gathered and a technical officer had helped Lt Moore to get the archaic imaging device working with his notepad - After an ad hoc cable solution which felt quite 21st century it finally worked.

"Welcome aboard the USS Arcana" he started. "This is the first time for me aboard a carrier, in fact it is the first time aboard any larger ship for me" Lt Moore stretched out a hand towards the podium righting himself after another roll.

"A few days ago contact was lost with a deep sea station, TP graver, in this area. We have reason to believe that the station came into contact with some kind of xenomorph. Most likely the same species we have been into contact with on Saint John and New York. Corporations have shown great interest in our contacts with this Alien and several corporate spies have been unveiled within USCM ranks - I advise You to keep Your eyes open at all times and report to me if You see something suspicious." Lt Moore let the info sink in for a few seconds.

"We will leave here in a few short ours - A minisub will take us down to roughly 3000 meters were we will suit up in Zero-G suits. From there we will work our way towards the station. We will all use M41 pulse rifles with special ammunition that works under water - However range is limited to roughly thirty meters. We will also use a special sonar tracker rather than our standard doppler shift motion trackers.

Once on the bottom these are the mission priorities: Locate TP-Greever and assess situation.

Determine condition of habitat.

Take steps to reduce threat to Colonial Marine corp or the United Americas"

Lt Moore pointed at the screen to emphasize.

"We are quite short on time here people. You have gotten the mission brief sent to Your datapads - I want them studied and I want the minisub stowed in eight hours." Lt Moore said.

"Questions?"

Dirk stood up an looked at the Lt. "Sir, if we find that the station is over run what are the standing orders? I don't want to risk any lives trying to salvage corporate property." he asked, knowing the answer even as he asked the question

patch raised his hand then said " sir do we know if the station is water/air tight or are we gonna be stuck in zero-g suits for the whole mission?"

Sitting at the back of the briefing room Obi leaned back into his chair, swaying with the roll of the ship. He smiled briefly as the LT clutched at the podium as the ship heaved in the heavy swell. My, my the old El-tee is not looking the best. Obi thought, glancing around the compartment he saw the pale expressions on a few of the marines. Neither do a few of the others! Lifting his brew mug to his lips, Obi sipped at his coffee as the LT started the briefing.
"A few days ago contact was lost with a deep sea station, TP graver, in this area.
A few days, that doesn't sound good, what was it that the mission brief said? Frowning, Obi removed his datapad and called up the OPORD Brief. Scrolling through the text to the bit he found. What is known is that all contact was lost 24 hours ago and that the umbilical cord was severed. They have reserve systems that will keep the site alive for at least another 48 hours.

Raising a hand Obi called out from the back.

"Sir, according to the initial mission brief, once the umbilical cord was severed they have power to the reserver life support systems for at least another 48 hours. Now that we are on a countdown, how much time do we have left?"

Jean looked up and raised her hand. "I recommend pinging the habitat with VLF side-scan sonar. It will allow us to assess whether or not there is pressurized gas within the hull of the facility, or if it's been breached and flooded."

Jean looked to the Lieutenant, "Ask ship maintenance if there is an LRAT aboard. The station should have one. It's possible that their radio's are out and they're attempting to transmit between twenty kilohertz to twenty hertz, the range of acoustic transmitters."

She shrugged her shoulders, "it could answer a lot of our questions."

Simovic sat there and took in the briefing with the others. He decided to raise the question that'd been bugging him since there last missions failure.

"Surely this mission isn't a priority, we should be concerntrating our efforts on finding our what happened to the potentially infected scientist who is still possibly at large in New York. Or has there been an update on this situation we havn't been notified about?"

<Tag Lt Moore>

Simovic hated working for corporatons their secretive nature and the way they were with holding information which could potentially save the lives of his men. If it came to it he'd blow TP-Greever and the space ship to kingdom come if it meant saving Marines lives.

Sixtus listened to the Lieutenant talking about the xenos surviving underwater, and their weapon's limitations at that depth.

"Sir, these things like to engage at melee range for combat. Thirty meters is cutting it close." Sixtus pointed out.

Upon hearing Sergeant Dugan's outburst, Sixtus added to it. "Sir, this sounds more like the Navy's area of expertise, not the Corps'."

Obi nodded in agreement with the medic. "Hell, even the Navy is mainly operated in space now anyway. We should just cut our losses and destroy the habitat and sanitise the surrounding area just to be sure. "

"Well I guess we're being sent in as we're the only combat unit to have come up against these creatures and survived, twice! Plus there is a slight chance there could be civvies still alive down there, since the break up of the SEALS the Navy doesn't really possess any troops who can perform search and rescue missions".

Simovic then muttered the last sentence so only Obi and the few marines sat near him could hear "Hell we could be being sent in for an ulterior reason".

Taking a sip of his coffee, Obi raised an eyebrow and gave a sideways glance at the Staff and replied low under his breath, laced with sarcasm. "Oh Staff they wouldn't do that, they wouldn't lie about if there is any form of Corporate interest. Its a rescue mission. "

Besides, if we drop some H.E. on the habitat, that means my squad doesn't have to go up against those things if they are there, and thats all good in my books. Sitting lower in his seat, Obi settled back and waited for the briefing to conclude.

Mind reeling with terror, Jacob's mind only latched on to a few concepts from this brief.

Namely...30m visibility, 3K+ meters underwater and the possibility of swimming bloodthirsty aliens...

feeling a cold sweat break out, he fought hard not to show any terror, but his hand was shaking as he reached for a packet of cigarettes - spying the marine who seemed to eye smoking distastefully he moved as far away as he could from them...no point in sparking a fued over being uncivil.

Raising his hand, he queried...

"Not being too fond of swimming, much less swimming in reduced visibility with sharks and bad things around me" He coughed "How many meters below the 3k we're being dropped, is the substation?"

settling back down, he felt his heart race faster and faster - this was quickly turning into a nightmare for him.

This was the fourth time Jean overheard Marines talking about killing civilians. She couldn't understand why anyone would do such a thing. First it was nuke a city, now it was bomb research station. At risk of sounding like a busted MP3 Segment, she replied to that in general.

"We can't just drop bombs on the station. There could be human beings still onboard the habitat." Jean looked worried that her thoughts on the matter wouldn't count -- even with her rank, to them, she was just the droid; an observer of sorts.

"She's right, but not for the reason she gave. Someone has to do the recce. El-tee, what's the backup plan in case things go FUBAR?" Sixtus asked, ignoring the smoke that was drifting from the cigarette.

"ARE YOU SERIOUS?" Obi asked incredulity, locking eyes with the android. "If those things are down there, everyone is already dead." Obi said vehemently.

"I'd rather see a couple of tons of high explosive wasted, than the lives of any one in here, for such a futile gesture." Obi said emphatically with a sweeping wave of his hand.
