Mission Two; Turn 1

Post by maxvale76 » Wed Aug 18, 2010 4:34 am

May 16th, 2180; Briefing Room, Space Station Bifrost Bridge, Alexandria Sector

It had been an eventfull six weeks for the fourteen marines of Strike Team 'The Easy Eights'; all of whom were in the briefing room, listening to USCM Intel officer Captain Tom Ryan and shady Weyland-Yutani Corporate Rep.; Oscar Black. As expected; the Corp's 'sources' had reported confirmation of BioCyte tests being conducted on the world of Forge and that a well-armed Mercenary unit; "The Reavers"; had been hired for protection.

It had all started with the interrogation of the Captured Doctor Wilhelm Voss; who had pretty quickly started to sing like a canary. He had been working as Doctor Grissom's assistant; and while he had no idea where the two Xenomorph eggs had come from; he was obviously fascinated by the species. Doctor Grissom had left a mere two days before Operation Invictus had kicked off; taking the other egg to the newly finished lab site on the Planet of Forge. This site was located in an abandoned mine complex in the rocky mountains of Forge that BioCyte had purchased some time ago. he also mentioned that they (Dr. Voss was to have followed Dr. Grissom the day after with information on the adult Alien species that had burst out of poor Jaime's chest) were to be better proctected by 'professional warriors'; which obviously meant mercs.

The Company Rep., Oscar Black and USCM Marine Intel officer collaborated and it was soon decided to form an Independent Strike Team made up of those with experience fighting Xenoorphs; to go after Doctor Grissom and any other BioCyte members at the lab complex on Forge.

Several of the surviving Marines were either in no shape to continue on with the Team; or asked to be transferred to other assignments. In addition; two other marines with experience in fighting the Xenomorphs were brought onto the Team; SGT Jacob Honesett and PFC Sam Dunn. The Team was re-organized and they were now getting thier last briefing on Space Station Bifrost; before boarding a ship and making the drop on Forge...

The briefing room buzzed with several different conversations occuring at once as Obi walked into it. What was left of the platoon was gathered here waiting for the briefing to commence for up coming operation. A few marines waved hello and Obi nodded back in greeting as he worked is way over to where SSGT Simovic was standing.

"Hey Staff, just back from the Stations' Commcen, here are our latest signal's for you and the skipper to look at. Nothing major, mainly administration, though there is one there confirming the transfer for Honeysett and Dunn to the platoon." Obi said as handed over the PDA he had been carrying to the SSGT.

Jacob sat there, lounging on his chair.

Scratching the stubble on his chin, he reached into his pocket for a cigarette.

Raised to his lips, the ping of a zippo opening, and the click of it being shut again.

Smoked flowed into the air around him.

Looking round, Jacob identified his 'new' squad...he wondered how they'd fight - they'd seen action before...but he needed to see it with his own eyes to work out who was best for what...

He hoped none of them were reckless. Reckless squaddies meant quicker deaths, and more dead squaddies meant he was more at risk. If there was one thing seeing battle had taught him - it was there's no shame in taking every step possible to keep yourself alive, even if it meant others saw you as paranoid and a hard cynic.

Almost out of habit, he scanned the shadows in the room - peering hard to see if they were just shadows. It never paid to be too careful.

Smiling to himself, he took another drag on his smoke. It was good to be going back into action, nothing like the pump of adrenaline to make you feel so alive...

Simovic sat on a chair near the front of the briefing room sipping from a cup of coffee. He'd just finished paperwork transferring Sgt. Kurosaki & Pvt. Brown to other units. From what he could work out Kurosaki's expertise was needed elsewhere and Brown had been put on light duty in order to fully heal from his wounds. These two losses were on top of PFC Patch who'd been killed in the previous mission and Pvt. Lionmane who'd been discharged on medical grounds, he'd need months of physio before he'd even be able to take a few steps. Just then Obi interrupted Simovic's thoughts.

"That's good we're definitely be needing the extra firepower on the next mission". Simovic took the PDA and quickly scanned it, instantly spotting Honeysetts name, he'd worked with him before and knew he was a dependable marine under fire. The other man Dunn was a Smartgunner and he'd undoubtedly come in useful when the shit was hitting the fan.

Simovic then listened to the briefing.

After which he went around around and introduced himself to the new Marines. "Its been along time Honeysett, hopefully the USCM have been looking after you since we last met". He also shook Dunns hand "Gooday there Dunn welcome to the platoon, your our second Aussie so hopefully you won't feel to homesick".

Rising to shake Simovic's hand, Jacob smiled

"You know how they are, they throw enough bullets at you until one of them sticks...still aint found mine yet"

It had been a long time, and as Jacob caught his eye he saw the slightly deadened look of the battle hardened - eyes steelier this time than when he last saw them...he was sure his looked worse as well...

"It's good to see you're still around, truly." The sentiment was sincere - and a large part of it was the reassurance of knowing there was at least one good soldier in the field with him, someone who's mettle he knew of.

He sat in the corner of the breifing room, his arms folded across his chest as he listened with mild interest to the conversations going on around him. He'd isolated himself on purpose - partially because the cold he'd picked up was somewhat contagious and he didn't want to give it to anyone else, and partly because he wanted a good look at the people he'd be risking his life alongside before he jumped in feet-first. He'd lost too many good mates to want to get friendly with a new unit to quickly.

His jet-black akubra hat was tilted forward, covering most of his face - that was fine by him. He was using the smartgunner's headset to see anyway - the camera resting on the side of his hat was all he needed to see, with the eyepeice over his right eye and his left closed. He preferred the world that the headset plunged him into, a monochrome world of dark surroundings and white-hot objects. It distanced him from it all, and gave him a feeling of safety that he enjoyed. Set into the band on his hat was a large amount of Xenomorph teeth, trophies from his last operation.

Right now, though, he had a PDA in his gloved hand, resting on his lap, and with his good eye he was reading the reports from the previous mission this unit had been on. Casualties had been unsurprisingly high, given the meat-grinder nature of the mission, but the unit had pushed through and succeeded regardless. He couldn't help but be impressed by that. Wasn't every day that you saw people determined enough to press on through a shitstorm like that. His old unit hadn't been able to do it.

So...corporate mercenaries and Xenos. That wasn't a good thing - combating one required completely opposite tactics to combating the other. He considered for a moment, before realizing that with his weapons loadout, trying to out-stealth the bugs just wasn't going to happen. He'd have to stay in the open and the light, go in loud and hope that his M56D Smartgun gave him enough of an edge over the Corporates to be able to kill them first. And that this new unit wouldn't fall apart around him.
"Gooday there Dunn welcome to the platoon, your our second Aussie so hopefully you won't feel to homesick".
The friendly voice and the offered hand snapped him out from his reverie, and he looked up at the person who'd spoken, noting the scars the man had and the rank on his uniform. As he looked up, the brim of his hat was tilted enough to reveal his face - young and gaunt, with tanned skin and heavy acid scarring on the right side of his face, mostly hidden for now by his smartgunner's eyepeice. He opened his other eye, a peircing storm grey, and took the older trooper's hand in a firm shake.

"Thanks Staff, glad to be here. Don't worry about me - so long as there's bugs around, I'll feel right at home." He replied softly, keeping his voice just above a whisper.

Corporal Valentine's eyes rolled at the thought of this operation, but more than that she felt a little out of place with everyone being so quiet and professional. Had they even gotten the same briefing? Folding her arms about her chest in contempt, she gradually raised one pair of forefingers to pull up the bill of her cap as she slumped against the back of her chair. The room felt humid and hot, maybe it was just her nerves but she could feel the perspiration blanketing her flesh with that familiar moist glazing; needless to say, it didn't make her feel any more comfortable.

"Oh come on boys.. You mean to tell me you all just sat through that bullshit, and noone's going to even bitch about it? Where's that legendary marine attitude? The way I see it, we're marching dead straight into an indefinite number of chokeholds, mounted defenses, and traps, all inside some spooky old mining shaft led by a mad scientist; yes mad, because obviously he didn't get the memo about how nasty those bugs are.. Noone's iffy in the least about this? It's a mining shaft right.. And this greaseball, Grissom is either already dead, or should be.. Why don't we just place some charges and collapse the whole facility. It'll save us a hell of alot of time. You know 80% of those mercs are probably former leathernecks anyway... Who wants to walk into that? Noone, that's who. Who's gonna walk into that? We are.. Crazy? Kickass? My gut says crazy as hell, but I'm gonna take kickass and run with it. Can I get an oorah!?"

Casey didn't have a problem with the team's silence at it, but it just seemed a little foreboding, and it just seemed traditional that someone spoke up at these things. She was knew here sure, but she wasn't new to the craft. She wanted more gung-ho or more pissed off either one, to be fair a good combination would be nice. Granted, it was the strong silent type you wanted at your back, but it was the loud and proud ones that made the corps feel like a family.

Jacob smiled at the outburst, she was right. It was a shit deal so far as he could tell - but it was the USCM, it was standard.

Rubbing the bridge of his eyes, he had a look at the details of the brief again.

"You're right, we are kind of shafted..." he paused, he didn't do gung ho or machismo too much - maybe he should stick to cynicism? "We are being sent off into a honeycomb maze full of wankers with guns, and aliens with crazy killing skills...it doesn't sound like a good deal eh?"

He draws on his cigarette, and starts to talk again, smoke spilling out of his mouth alongside his words...

"fact of the matter is. It aint the worst mission I've been on - and it sure as shit aint the best...but we're marines yeah? We take it in stride and we'll make sure that not one thing we see in that maze walks out alive if we dont want it to. We could blow it up from orbit, but that just aint as fun as seeing the look on some rent a soldier down the way as you fire up the incinerator is it? It's more fun if we can see the whites of their eyes!"

it makes you feel more alive he added silently in his head afterwards...

Quinn walked into the room, looking more haggard than he normally did, which was quite the accomplishment. He actually looked clean shaven, which was a true miracle, but anyone who knew him knew that would only last a few hours. The man could grow whiskers like a jungle grew bamboo. Even then, the man still looked like death warmed up.

He shambled over to Honeysett and nodded. "It's been a while Sarge." Sixtus stated. He took a chair near him.

"Looks like I'm back in your squad. Wasn't it you who told me that medics don't last long in this platoon?"

Slapping him on the shoulder, Jacob chuckled "Guessing you're the exception that proves the rule lad!"

"How's it been in this place? Feels like I've been gone a lifetime!"

Dirk sat back in his chair sat in the briefing room. Lighting a cigarette he looked around at the tired faces of the men that had fought nightmares come to life. A few of the guys were gone though. Dead, wounded or transferred the result was the same. They were gone and weren't coming back. That meant replacements were going to be brought in. Most times that meant danger for the old hands. Trying to bring a new guy up to speed while watching your own ass was difficult at best, sometimes damn near impossible, but fate smiled on them this time. Both SGT Jacob Honesett and PFC Sam Dunn had both slugged it out with those things and come out the other end alive.

When the assignments were handed out Dirk was glad he wouldn't be stuck in the APC again. He needed to get into the mix this time and not set on the sidelines.

Standing he greeted the two men."SGT Honesett and PFC Dunn. Good to see that the Corps took their head out of their asses and sent someone that can fight" He said holding out his hand

"Likewise, it's nice to be sent to a unit where I know the track record!"

Grinned Jacob, it was like a school reunion...

Morse restrained himself from rolling his eyes at the "We are the Corps" speech which always seemed to happen. Even after having been in the corps as long as he had, he didn't believe as deeply in the bulstering methods the others seemed to all cling to. He believed in maintaining a train of thought that was unique to the individual, rather then go along with what the crazy's did. So as a result any time those speaches were given, he tended to just phase it out.

""fact of the matter is. It aint the worst mission I've been on..."
"Ya, but I seen people die in easier." Morse said in response to the statement that Honeysett. He hadn't seen him for a while, but he had never been one much for that.

But why's it everytime they send a call fer commission on account a some rich nut doc doin somethin crazy, they grab us? Why can't they just send some other group a assholes, why's it always this group a assholes? The brass taken bets on breakers' and takers, er we just gettin unlucky when they grab names outa a hat?" Morse asked in an open question. His view on the corps, as well on the usual issue their unit had to take up were well known. It wasn't intended in a deconstructive way, but it was really a question that was always on his mind.

"I say in this next mission we should do "scorched earth"." Quinn muttered. He wasn't suggesting they actually go against orders, but it was how he felt. His tone of voice was unnaturally vicious. "Teach the corporates that they want us to clean up their mess, we do it our way. No politics, no profit factors. Just leave nothing behind us but craters and radiation."

He sighed, letting go of the momentary rage and regaining his legendary cool. "Sorry Staff, didn't intend that to slip out." he apologized to Dugan.

Obi played with his stylus and aimlessly tapped it on the screen of his PDA as his fellow marines politely voiced their concerns about the up coming Op.

"Have we got any hard intel on how many numbers and weapons that the enemy forces can bring against us? As well, what is their level of training and morale ect? Plus, how many of those alien things could we be dealing with?" Obi asked as he looked up.
