Turn 4 - Killer view [updated]

Post by Nick » Wed Apr 20, 2011 6:13 pm

Undisclosed location, Space Trade lane, Near communications relay
Mission timer: 00.00.00

The marines moved up through the corridors towards the bridge of USS Costaguana. The corridors were narrow and every ten to twenty meters thick bulkheads made it even more claustrophobic. United Americas ships were not made to run around on, most crews spent 99% of the time aboard tucked away in a cryo chamber sleeping. Thick cables ran in the roof and beneath their feet metal plating with square holes revealed even more cables below the floor in cable ducts.

They reached a pressure door and Monk, who went first in this veritable maze of corridors and crawlspaces, opened it seemingly by psychic powers. This was not the case naturally, he was hooked up via the ships wireless network. After about five minutes walk through USS Costaguana they reached another door, with the words Observation deck, sprayed on the bulkhead. The bulkhead was slightly corroded and some kind of small oil leak had stained the writing.

The door slid up as the first had did, however with an slight creeking sound. The marines entered, for many it was the first time, others had been here before. The view in front of them was mesmerizing. The whole observation deck was completely flooded in a stark blue light. Before them on a pitch black backdrop a large round brown asteroid could be seen floating some kilometers away. On top of it a large disc shaped antenna reflected the brilliant bright blue light from the nearby dwarf star. A little to the right a gaseous cloud colored sickly green could just barely be seen. For many Marines this was the most impressive sight they had seen ever, including many sunsets on Earth which were notoriously beatiful - Even by galactic standards. This was part due to the Earths atmosphere being so heavily polluted combined with increased solar activity.

But this was better.

Lt Ericson gasped at the view. "Damn..." was all that she said initially.

A minute past and Lt Ericson looked at Monk.

"Monk, sure this is a nice view and all but we have a job to do..." Lt Ericson said, trying to not sound too impatient.

Monk answered without looking at Ericson. "Wait."

Lt Ericson frowned at the arrogant reply but bit her tongue. He was an artficial person, which didn't stop him from being an asshole, but he would never get it anyway. She had to show control in front of her troops.

Lt Ericson moved her view back towards the Asteroid. As she looked at it she saw that it was turning slightly, rotating slowly of axis towards them. The strong blue light was almost painful but she stayed with the large rock. Suddenly she saw something on the edge of the asteroid, something that reflected the sun. A few more seconds passed and then se saw the back of a large ship tethered to the rock. As the rock turned more the ship was revealed completely.

"It is the USS Corrado" Monk said.

"The Corrado?!" Lt Ericson exclaimed in stark suprise. "What the hell are they doing there? They should be in the other end of the system by now! The comm relay was our objective, they don't have the spare parts with them to fix it?" Lt Ericson felt a surge of adrenaline. Someone had fucked up and she didn't like having her job being plucked from under her nose.

"I have contacted the USS Corrado and they have replied that they picked up an emergency signal that seemed to have originated from the comm relay. That was not the case it seemed. The emergency signal was relayed from a nearby large asteroid known as TK-050. The strength of the signal was so intense it disrupted the whole communications array. The USS Corrado have sent a dropship down to investigate and they have asked for us to move in as backup."

Lt Ericson was baffled by the turn of events. She were also a little disturbed by the fact that Monk had decided to be a drama queen and taking them all up here. She wanted this kind of info first hand so she could process it first. She would have to take that up with the AP.

"Ok people, you have seen the show and you have as much info as I have as of this moment. Dropship prep and load immidiately. I want you to be ready for insertion in less than one hour!" She said authoritatively.

"Monk, take us into orbit around TK-050 I don't want to fly in space longer than necessery with the UD-L, ok?"

Monk replied "Of course"

Lt Ericson couldn't shake that Monk had a hidden agenda, and with that she turned around and hurried back down to start the dropship prep.

Obi filed through the door way onto the Observation Deck with the rest of the platoon. Stopping, he let out a low whistle as he took in the very visually impressive vista before him.

"My, that is quite a sight to behold." Obi said to know one in particular.

His star gazing was interrupted by a shout of alarm of the LT.
"The Corrado?!" Lt Ericson exclaimed in stark suprise. "What the hell are they doing there? They should be in the other end of the system by now! The comm relay was our objective, they don't have the spare parts with them to fix it?"
Obi surreptitiously moved in a little closer, as did most of the rest of the platoon, to listen closer to the exchange between the LT and the android. Monk was speaking now and Obi paid close attention to what he had to say, after all, he was the embodiment of the ship's eye's and ear's while the marines were in the tubes.
An emergancy signal that was of strength it disrupted a warship's comms array? Obi frowned at that thought. Thats not right, an emerg sig is supposed to be at a preset power level which will give maximum life for the emergency power available. A signal of such intensity is more akin to a deliberate Electronic Warfare attack.

Speaking up, Obi called out at the android.

"Monk, if the signal disrupted the comms array, how did you manage to get into contact with them? Was it only a temporary disruption, or are the USS Corrado comms systems operating in a degraded state?" Obi said as he gestured towards the other warship that was coming more into visual range.

Marcus had kept quiet on the way up, noting the state of the ship as they moved through it. All the pips and pops and hisses and hums sounded normal. But he was no savant, he couldn't tell a ship was breaking before it did.

Still the damn thing felt eerie as all hell.

Getting up to the observation deck, Marcus filed along and smiled at the view. "Well. This just about made Boot Camp worth it."
Monk and the LT conversed and as they did Marcus's eyes cringed as he began to see something that probably shouldn't have been there.
Monk and LT wrote: "It is the USS Corrado" Monk said.

"The Corrado?!" Lt Ericson exclaimed in stark suprise. "What the hell are they doing there? They should be in the other end of the system by now! The comm relay was our objective, they don't have the spare parts with them to fix it?"
Marcus's eyes narrowed as he tried to get a look at the ship. Something that big tying itself down, in the middle of space. It seemed like bad, hasty, planning. He wasn't an expert though. But a pinch in his gut was telling him this was the F in the five letter designation for missions. He had his own set of words for those sort of situations. The first was 'Flawed'. Courses of action made on Flawed intelligence, judgement, perspective, etc. F happened a lot. But he didn't like it.

"That glare is doing something to my eyes then, cause it looks like they're tethered to the station already. They don't have a cargo elevator?" Certain ships could be fitted with heavy cargo movers in situations like these. They made use of the zero-g environment and got things moved quickly, and usually safely.
"Ok people, you have seen the show and you have as much info as I have as of this moment. Dropship prep and load immidiately. I want you to be ready for insertion in less than one hour!" She said authoritatively.
Marcus spun on his heels and headed for the door, he had counted the turns on the way here. Now it was just a matter of getting back.

There were few things in the whole of the galaxy that Morse could actually look at, and agree with other people on what he was seeing. What was in front of them there, didn't particularly fit into Morse's concept of beauty. The reason, was not the sight itself, but more so his surroundings. Morse, in a realistic sense, hating being in space. Sure he liked to see planets and things as much as the next person, but for him it was more important to be on a more natural environment. Here he was standing on a massive brick of metal, floating through space, that just happened to have a few windows. This wasn't something he could touch. This wasn't much different then watching it on a vid-screen. And that was something that always bothered him about space. Everything in it was so far away, and you couldn't touch it or feel it. The only thing he felt here was the cold air from the vents, and the bitterness about the fact he was standing on a space ship. Planet side was where he liked to be. He couldn't even stand space stations. But that was just the bitter sort of person he was.

At the mention of the U.S.S Corrado he instantly began to look to see if he could find it. Seeing it took his mind off the things he wanted to say about the robot which dragged them all up there. He knew where it was supposed to be, and knew it wasn't supposed to be there. The circumstances being explained he considered to be an almost routine sort of thing. Backing up a position was nothing. They weren't likely to find anything, after they got there it was more then likely that the other ground force would already being reporting back that nothing was there. But none of this particularly mattered. "Fuck." He said, as was appearing to be his particularly favorite phrase of this mission, and turned around to head to prepare. He wouldn't likely need much time, but there were always other things to do.

Joe was amazed at the view spread before the platoon. It was one the most amazing sights, and naturally was his first. He was Earth-born and hadn't been a ship baby or from another planet. So this was actually his first view in person of another world. It was a sight to behold. He heard the other Marines conferring about the ship in front of them that shouldn't have been there. A sense of wrong hung in the room and made the hairs on Joe's neck stand a little as they chased a shiver down his spine.

Things were wrong judging from the conversations being carried out but Joe figured he'd get the run down from the NCO's and would do whatever the mission was.

Things have gone awry...

Join the Marines, see new worlds, blow em up. You owe it to yourself to enjoy the little things, Rascal. Rascal took in the sight of the planet ahead, never quite finding placement in either category of awe or disbelief. The el-tee's outburst shattered his daydreaming, alerting him of possible changes in the plan. He scanned the view and noticed the ship just floating by, and grimaced. "Well, look who decided to ruin the party," he muttered to noone in particular, continuing with a sarcastic, "Maybe they'd like to do the job for us." Friggin Brass. Never could figure out how the field worked. Then again, should you know? "Welp, who's mess up was this? Hey toaster," Rascal addressed Monk, ignoring the slight glare given to him by the android, "You cook up this rendevous? Got an ol robot pal you wanna see or something? Wasnt April 1st a ways back?"

Duncan stood in awe of the sight before him. He had never been off-planet before, and had spent not really been able to see a whole heck of a lot for the last four years. As the CO gave the orders to prep the dropship, Duncan tried to figure out what he should do. All in all, it seemed pretty rushed, running from breakfast to ops in an hour.

"Ma'am," Duncan said, "is there going to be life support where we're being deployed or should we prep suits?"

Once he received his answer, he began to make his way to the armory, making sure to find Kurosaki on the way back.

"Sarge, I know I mentioned this before, but can we loadup with buckshot rounds?"

The view had rendered Chappell speechless. Its colors in stark contrast to the pitch black of space made them all the more beautiful. Sentences unspeakable in pleasant company filled his brain, and yet he remained silent, absorbing the spectacle before they would eventually have to leave here again for the cold gray of the ship. Aware of questions breaking the silence, Red blinked and turned away, trying to recall what had been just said.

After everything he had been through in his life there were a few things that still amazed Dirk, this view was one of them. He had had seen things like this before, but it still amazed him. As he scanned the space his eyes were drawn to the object tethered to the rock. He didn't need anyone to tell him it was the USS Corrado, he could tell by the look of her.

Listening to the LT and then the men talk a bad feeling crept over him. If the USS Corrado was here and requesting backup from them, then things had gone in a strange direction. He never liked it when there were more questions then answers before an op. But Marines did their duty, no matter what

Samantha took in the sight of the Star and felt her eyes start to water at the beauty of it while a little sigh escaped her lips. Of course; she then remembered where she was and the fact that she was surrounded by battle-hardened, Colonial Maries and did a little cough and look-away to wipe her face to hide her sentimentality.

Catching up on the conversation from the El-tee; the Android and the various marines around her; Sam stood quiet; waiting to hear what the final orders would be. Her heart started beating faster though and a nervousness began to make its prescense felt in her stomach as she just KNEW that things were about to get really INTERESTING in the near-future.
