Turn 5 - Archeology

Post by Nick » Sun Apr 24, 2011 11:54 am

Unidentified Asteroid, near space trade lane, In vicinity of communications relay
Mission timer: 00.10.15

The USS Corrados call for assistance had come as a bit of a suprise for the Marines. They were train to expect the unexpected but this was far beyond what they could ever have imagined.

USS Corrado had landed a force 1½ hour earlier on the asteroid. The Marines were dressed up in space suits as they moved in to pinpoint the source of the signal. When they did their first message was "Uhm, Lieutenant...I think you need to see this"

This was about the same message that had been relayed to USS Costaguana and Lt Ericson. The Marines had found something extraordinary. It was a little annoying to be toyed with when the other Lt of USS Corrado had said "Get over here instead, You really need to see this..."

The Dropship landed softly next to the other dropship of USS Corrado and the Marines saw how whisks of air whirled around as the interior hull equalized pressure with the exterior atmosphere which was extremely thin with trace elements of ozone.

The Marines filed out, following Lt Ericson who decided to tag along rather than stay in the command APC. Tracks from the other dropship could be seen in the dirt of the asteroid, above them trails from the solar wind looked almost like thin dreamlike curtains and beyond that black eternity. The Marines came around a small hill and beneath it, half buried into the soil a sharp square like object portruded from the hillside. Lt Ericson could not make it out at first, perhaps a satelite? But were they square in shape, she was uncertain and moved closer. The Space suits were rather clumsy and she half fell, half skidded down the hill. Ericson cursed out loud as she lost footing and slid on her ass the last few meters in a small cloud of dust. She slowly got to her feet, felling like a pregnant whale in the suit. The M41 had slid around and was now partially blocking her view. Stupid rifle, always in the way. She put it under her should and up against the life support backpack where it locked into place.

Lt Ericson moved closer to the square object and saw Lt Martinez of USS Corrado. "Lieutenant" he said formally. She replied but only gave him a fraction of a glance as her eyes were suddenly nailed to the square object.

The object was 4 meters tall, wider at the base than at the top. It was dark green, perhaps even black in some places. It was perfectly smooth, glasslike. It had a divide running down its dead center and it resembled pretty much of a bulkhead door - Albeit it looked like nothing a human hand could create.

"What is it?" Lt Ericson said. "Some kind of door, we have been working on it for 30 minutes now."

"Do You really think we should open it?" Lt Ericson glanced at Martinez, just as the last of the USS Costaguana marines slid down the slope next to her.

Marcus stumbled at the last bit of rock and as he halved his steps to regain balance; he nearly ran into the LT. He stepped to the side though and got a look at the block.

Really it looked more like a door.

Well... it looked like something.

Markus half-laughed. It came out on the open channel and he instantly regretted saying it. "Sorry, sirs." He shut up and shifted to the side. It was hard to get a good feel for the thing while inside a suit.

He walked aside the officers and got a look at the thing.

"Anyone knock yet?" He asked, miming a knocking motion.

Morse made his way down the slope. He didn't like to do these sorts of things fast, but the gravity of the thing didn't give him a lot of choice. He stumbled a bit, but not much, and came out on his feet. He hated space, he hated space a lot. "Aint it just fuckin' impossible fer the corps tuh send us somewere good." Morse said to himself. He couldn't stand moving around on the surface of a place like this. Miserable and desolate. The farthest place from a natural environment that humans should be on. Whatever it was they were looking at he didn't understand. His best guess was that it might have been some corporate art project. Or what was more likely some corporate screw up that they didn't want to talk about, that they shouldn't be close to. He wasn't particularly on edge as much as he was concerned about potentially microscopic debris, which could rip straight through their suits. "Fuckin' rocks." Morse said, while he started to drift back the the thought of how much he hated walking around in open space.

Obi bounded along the asteriods surface, propelled by the low gravity, his boot's kicked up twirl's of dust as he landed and gently pushed off again. Following the LT down the slope, ableit with more grace, Obi grinned as her curses lit up the comm as she EVA suited formed picked itself up from the heap in which it landed in. Bounding the last few metre's down the slope Obi landed next to the LT and gazed at the object that greeted him.

Keying his comm, Obi spoke up. 'Well there is something you don't see everyday."

(Rolled a crit success for this.)

Quinn, like Obi, wasn't having as much difficulty with the low gravity. His mind calculated the distance and the gravity, estimating the required amount of force he'd need to propel himself with. He bounced along next to Obi, seeming to have nowhere near as much difficulty as the Lieutenant. When he reached the downhill slope, he just jumped into open "air" and sailed slowly downward to the gathering of Marines. He landed with a puff of dust, his pulse rifle in his hands at the casual position.

He looked at the object, trying to puzzle it out. He then started to hum the theme to Space Odyssey, as an internal joke. He then noticed the commander of the U.S. Corrado's Marines, and gave him a nod, since a salute wasn't a good idea in the field.

Rascal, humming nonchalantly as he slid down the slope, landed in a puff of asteroid dust. He cursed mentally as he noticed the gnarly powder coating his suit, then took a glance around at the other Marines., finally catching the sight before him.

"Whoa," was all he found himself exclaiming, no witty comment prepared for the strange objects placed ahead of them, which was definitely a first.

Duncan ambled down the hill without much difficulty. He was trained both in survival and in the use of various HARD equipment. As he came to the bottom of the hill, he saw the unearthed doorway. He wondered how large the thing was. The whole hill? The whole asteroid? Whatever happens, make sure you're not the one tasked with opening it. Duncan awaited orders.

Joe's elevated breathing was loud in his own ears as he made his way with the platoon. He'd been familiarized in his various aspects of training with the equipment he was using but never had any actual experience in low-gravity or a vacuum. The stuffy claustrophobic feeling at least, wasn't too foreign. But getting around on the asteroid was slightly difficult and he was lagging behind his spot in the formation. He watched the Lieutenant take a spill and heard her curse slightly above his breathing. Joe slowly made his way down the hill and found himself confronted by the sight that the rest of the Marines were staring at.

What is that?

A lack of the usual earth gravity is a strange thing to experience. Some would take to it easily, while others, even with all the necessary training, could struggle their entire lives with it. Knowing the force needed to propel oneself in such conditions was an acquired skill, one which Rednus had attained years ago, but still hadn't mastered. The slope they were descending wasn't too steep, but could provide enough difficulty to cause some minor mistakes, as Chappell was about to find out.
Misjudging the correct amount of thrust needed to arrive at the group below him, he sailed a clear foot over some of the other marines, and collided with the LT, apologizing all the way on his impromptu flight, with Quinn's hummed theme providing an added layer of unwanted humor to his mistake.

Dirk walked down the ramp of the dropship onto the surface of the rock they had landed on. Adjusting to the low grav environment started walking down the hill to where the LT was headed. The hill was steep and difficult to get down without falling, but Dirk spent most of his life away from the Corps surfing, so his balance and control of his body was better then most.

As the object came into view Dirk's mind was racing with possibilities. Was it man made? Not likely his mind answered. Then who had put it there. and why. Getting his M41A ready he looked over to his two man squad.

"There's only two uses for a locked door that I know of. To keep something from getting in or to keep something from getting out." Dirk said "Maybe I'm just paranoid but I want third squad ready for action. Silas, Duncan weapons at the ready and stay alert."

Obi smirked as the EVA suited body of a marine sailed past him in mid flight only to be brought to a sudden stop when it collided with the LT. EV rookies. Obi thought amusingly. EV was something either people hated or loved. Obi was thankful that he was the latter half and had no issues at all in moving around in the EVA suits. Turning his attention back to the task at end, Obi stared at the unusual sight confronting the platoon.

"So has any one seen a large white rabbit and a little blonde girl by any chance?" Obi asked over the comm sarcastically.

Samantha enjoyed the feeling of "weightlessness" in her EVA suit; bouncing on the asteroid with a silly grin on her face. She quickly wiped it off though when she saw her NCO glance at her like she was crazy.

Coming to the "door"; Samantha grew quite nervous and began gripping her Pulse Rifle a little tighter. Talking quietly to herself; she asked; "Umm....why exactly are we trying to 'open' this hatch?"

Lt Ericson sent an icy stare towards Chapell as he bumped into her.

"Ok listen up people. The USS Corrado crew will go in and secure the site. We have authorization from ICC to go in and check it out. We are to set up a perimeter while they clear the site. Once cleared we will monitor the site from USS Costaguana and await a garrison company from Sol. It will take them a few days to get here. We are to be ready to move into the site in two conditions: 1) Corrado asks for assistance or 2) The site proofs to be too large for one platoon to clear it. I want you to be mentally prepared to move in at moments notice." Lt Ericson said.

Obi stared impassionately at the LT's little speech. Well the crux of it is that we hurry up and wait. Great. Obi turned to is two squad mates, Quinn and Hall.

"Well it looks like it is hurry up and wait for us. Oh we had better grab our squad leader before he goes flying off into the solar system." Obi said with a grin as he made reference to Chappell's flying antic's.

Duncan nodded at Sgt. Pitt's command and readied his pulse rifle. The idea of gunfighting in a low-G environment where even a pinhole tear in his suit could be fatal didn't much appeal to him. Just keep your head on a swivel and don't make any rookie mistakes. I'd be sweating bullets if I weren't in the inky blackness of space.

A sigh of relief escaped Duncan when he heard that they were just setting up a perimeter. He was a little confused as to what to do next. He leaned over towards Pitt, even though the fact they were speaking through radio comms made the gesture pointless.

"Sir, where should third squad set up?"
