Turn 7 - Corridor

Post by Nick » Mon May 09, 2011 3:19 pm

Unidentified Asteroid, near space trade lane, In vicinity of communications relay
Mission timer: 01.05.15

Lt Ericson tried to contact the Hellbender squad without avail. She thought for a few seconds and found herself in the center of attention of the other marines, awaiting her call. The radio had been silent for a few minutes now. No static, no chatter, no nothing. A single pearl of sweat rolled down her cheek. Lt Ericson looked at the doors, the where identical to each other. There were no symbols in direct vicinity of either. "When in doubt go right..." she said to herself.

Lt Ericson pointed towards one of the doors, ok Squad 1 and 2 stack up and get that door open. Squad 3 you bring up the rear.

Squad 1 and 2 quickly got the door open and started down the corridor that laid beyond. Lt Ericson moved in right after squad 2, positioning herself in the middle. The corridors roof sloped down until it almost touched the marines heads.

A faint green glow could be seen a few meters in. It was a chemical flare, most likely dropped by someone in the Hellbender squad. "Chapell, I want You to drop flares if these stop all the sudden. Each should be in sight of the most recently visible."

Lt Ericson threw a glance on the glassy walls. They were smooth as they had been in the room before, they seemed to tell some kind of story. Large grotesque vaguely humanoid looking creatures behind massive hordes of xenomorphs with elongated heads, thorny backs and long skeletal looking tails. Lt Ericson supressed a shiver.

Lt Ericson said to Kurosaki "Ok, get those trackers online..."

Up ahead the corridor took a square 90 degree turn. A faint green glow could be seen just at the corner, next to it something laid on the floor. It was unsymmetrical and reminded of a heap on clothes.

"Chappell, I want You to drop flares if these stop all the sudden. Each should be in sight of the most recently visible."
"You got it" answered Red as he began configuring his motion tracker for indoor use and setting the active range to one-hundred meters. While the mission remained at the forefront of his mind, he absorbed every detail of this place, especially the disturbing 'art' now confronting them. He kept an unlit flare held ready in his right hand all the while.

Squinting his eyes and leaning forward in an unsuccessful attempt to gain a better view of the object on the floor ahead, Rednus asked himself as much as anyone "What is that?"

As 1st Squad moved down the passageway, Obi brought him the rear, occasionally turning around ensuring that 2nd Squad was still in position moving following along in 1st Squad's wake maintaining a separation of 15 to 20metres. The shoulder lamps of the marines EVA suits casting eerie shadows on the wall, made even more so by the etchings carved into them. Obi suppressed a shudder as he recognised the Xenomorph's. The memories of the mission to Anubis Station came rushing back. The alien talons latched onto him as it tried to drag him away. Shaking his head Obi pushed away the memories. Moving over the to the wall Obi reached out tenatively and ran his fingertips over the carvings, tracing the outline of the humaniod figure. The wall felt smooth as if it was laser cut.

"I recognise the xenomorph's, but whats the go with the humaniod figure in the carvings? Anyone have any ideas? Is it possible that the Xenomorphs wiped them out?."

Obi whispered quietly into his headset as he took his hand away from the wall, raising his pulse rifle to his shoulder and continuing on.

Lt Ericson stared at the lump on the floor, it came closer for every step. It felt like an eternity before they reached it. The shoulder lights of the marines behind the others sent out razor sharp shadows that played and bobbed on the glassy surfaces. One of the marines bent down and lifted the pile with his pulse rifle. It was a USCM shirt, it was heavily stained with blood and several large holes were ripped into the shirt. Lt Ericson felt a surge of adrenaline and a sucking feeling in her stomach, her mouth went dry and she had to fight for her legs not to fold beneath her.

"Uhm...however wore that shirt is dead. Without a suit in this environment would be enough, adding to that the damage...and blood" Lt Ericson said and took a deep breath. Her mind was racing. Should they go back up and secure the site and await backup or go further inside?

"Ok sharpen up people. Check those corners. I want heads on a swivel. Squad 3, don't let anything creep up on us now. We are going in a bit further to see if there is anyone alive."

Suddenly Chappells motion tracker went alive for a brief few seconds. A contact perhaps 25 meters away had flickered past. It seemed to be moving very fast across the screen. It was gone as fast as it had appeared.

"Machineguns, incinerators up front! If it moves and has more than two legs cut it in half and burn it to hell!" she ordered.

Dirk walked through the door slowly. Walking cautiously down the sloping hallway he looked at the walls. They were smooth and glassy as they had been in the room before but these had pictures carved on them. The large, grotesque and vaguely humanoid looking creatures were somewhat disconcerting, nut what was behind them sent a chill of recognition down Dirk's spine. The elongated heads, thorny backs and long skeletal looking tails were all too familiar to Dirk. Xenomorphs, nightmares, creatures. They had many names but seemed to serve only one purpose, to kill. Gripping his M-41A tightly he kept a weary eye on his surroundings.

"Roger that LT. Third, hold back a few yards. I want some separation from first and second. Stay alert. Call out targets as you see em. Like the LT said. If it ain't human, kill it." Dirk said falling back from the main group a few yards while keeping an eye on the stretch of hallway they had already traveled down. Rear guard.

Marcus had taken point on the Thirds squad as they moved brought up the rear of the group. He didn't like how dark and dank the whole place felt, and how easily they were getting in.

It felt like... a trap.

But he was keeping his trap shut, as ordered.

When the LT found the shirt, he wanted to duh the points she stated. But he kept his mouth shut.

"More than four legs? What the hell?" He muttered, his channel was open but his eyes were keen. He had his lights on and rather than risk blinding the others, had it angled up on the ceiling.

<Perception>

If it moved, and wasn't a marine, it was getting shot.

Duncan was startled by the sudden orders. He brought his pulse rifle to bear on the hallway behind the platoon. His shoulder lamp reflected off the smooth frescoed walls. Duncan ignored the eerie impression that the monsters on the walls were moving.

"Roger, Sarge," Duncan responded to Pitt. He waited for any sign of trouble.

Suddenly Chappell's motion tracker went alive for a brief few seconds.
"Hey!, we got somethin' fast in here, up ahead, 26 meters!"

Rednus stated, though quick as he'd said it, the contact had vanished from screen, the dull 'signal empty' sound thup...thup...thup continued regardless.

<tag Quinn, first squad>

It may be standing still... he thought.

He'd heard the stories of the Xeno's from the other Marines, of they're speed, cunning and power, but had never seen one up close, not that he wanted to. He was beginning to feel, however, this was going to be a choice he would have no part in making.

Sixtus's light played over the carvings of the story, easily picking out the xenomorphs. When the unit came to the corridor with the green light, Sixtus looked at the shirt in question that the Lieutenant held. When she said that whoever wore it was now dead, he replied "Carvings and this shirt suggest chestburster."

When Rednus's tracker went off, Quinn held up a closed left fist, signalling the squad to stop as Rednus's tracker came alive. Then it was suddenly quiet again. His mind raced through multiple scenarios until he arrived at one. He switched over to the platoon tacnet.

"Echo-Three Actual, Echo-One Actual. Ambush possible, with distraction to keep us facing forward. Over. Echo-Two Actual, Echo-One Actual. Keep an eye up, these bastards like to use the ceiling." he muttered, then hefted his pulse rifle to aim down the hallway.

<tag Pitt and Morse>

"Obi, take point. Rednus, stay behind me with your eyes on the tracker. Sam, tail-end charlie. Squad, advance slowly." he ordered in a strangely calm but authoritative voice. "Slow is smooth, smooth is fast."

Samantha replied to Quinn with a nervous; "Aye, aye"; and fell back into the Drag position for the squad.

Keeping her head on a swivel; Sam made sure to look up, down and all around as constantly as she could. Feeling her hands get a little wet with sweat; she made sure to dry them off on her pants and then did a quick check to make sure her M41 was good-to-go.

"Echo-One Actual, Echo-Three Actual, Roger that on possible ambush. We have a few yards of separation from you and have shut the back door tight." Dirk said as he looked from left to right and floor to ceiling.

Held Obi fast his position as the pinging of the tracker went off. Looking around slowly Obi waited for the telltale pinging increase as the contact grew close. Sweating in his EVA suit Obi wished he could pop his visor and wipe the beads of sweat on his brow.
"Obi, take point. Rednus, stay behind me with your eyes on the tracker. Sam, tail-end charlie. Squad, advance slowly." he ordered in a strangely calm but authoritative voice. "Slow is smooth, smooth is fast
Releasing a breathe that he hadn't realised that he had been holidng, Obi pysched himself off and move forward.

"Roger that Quinn, on the way." Obi said as he moved forward. Pausing as he made his way past Rednus.

"Keep an eye on that tracker mate."

<tag> Rednus.

Pulse Rifle into his shoulder, safety catch off and finger resting lightly on the trigger, Obi moved slowly and surely down the passageway. Breathing slowly as he eyes scanned every inch of the area methodically.

They had advanced steadily down the corridor. Joe's breathing heavy in his suit as everything around him made no sound. The strange build of the "hall" was mind numbing. And there were carvings in it of weird and grotesque varieties. Joe couldn't find anything in his mind to explain what they were but felt it was best that he not give them more than a passing glance.

The order to hold was given as the Lieutenant assessed something up ahead. In between the legs of the command group he could see the bloody t-shirt on the ground. Something clicked in Joe's head as it took a moment of quiet realization to process that whoever wore that is most certainly dead. The Lieutenant only confirmed this fact.

How the hell did someone get out of their suit? What is going on he-

Questions began to surge into his mind.

CONCENTRATE! They hushed.

Joe kept on the alert, watching the Marines of first squad, just in case they were ready to rea-.
rednus wrote:"Hey!, we got somethin' fast in here, up ahead, 26 meters!"
Joe was startled by the sudden burst of comms traffic that followed. Orders and responses flew back and forth for a few curt moments and then everyone continued on.

Look at the ceiling? Somethings not right here...
