It did not take long for Quinn to arrive. It was expected, not because he was new, but really because there was little else interesting going on. The Firebase was the most secured place in the region, and once you went beyond its walls you were at risk. Though nothing had really come up to them that was worth noticing as a thread, they still didn’t go out of their way to venture beyond.

Morse had initially assumed Quinn would start working with the new arrival immediately, but he gave the lower ranks orders first. The order being to unload the dropship of course. A massive load of supplies, ordinance, and personal thing which many had called for.

But even though they may have had special items, Morse found the essentials to their survival to be the biggest thing. And though he was on equal ranking as Obi, he had seniority. ”Ordinance first, then the food, then whatever.” Morse told the other two. Three of them though might take a while moving it all, and Morse wondered where the others were.

”Where the fucks Coleslaw?” Morse asked himself turning around as he got on the ramp. ”Yo Coleslaw!” Morse yelled out in the direction he’d passed Colson. ”Git the fuck up here’n start unloadin’ the goodies!” Morse ordered, though he wouldn’t care if it was ignored.

He then came up to the first box, picked it up, and started moving it to their makeshift armory.

Dirk looked over PFC Williams paperwork and transfer orders for a moment. It looked like everything was in order. Handing him back his information was about to give him his orders when he heard a thud behind them.

Looking over he saw the LT on his ass by the APC. Before doing anything he made sure that he wasn't hurt. Once he saw Quinn get up he turned back to the new guy. It was never a good idea to say a word about your CO falling on his ass if you didn't have to, and he didn't

"Williams, I see that people call you eyeball. OK. Eyeball. Well eyeball, I'm Staff Sgt Pitt. Standing orders here are for you to be armed or have your weapons within arms length at all times. Shower, head, chowhall, rack. I don't care. you WILL be ready to fight at a moments notice. We are a forward unit, fighting things that belong in a nightmare." He said letting the words sink in for a moment. "I'm putting you with Cpl Morse's squad. He'll brief you on the enemy and take care of what you need to get settled in. After that, you can get all the tech data on the Xenos from your PADD. I'll have the upload done ASAP. Just follow orders, stay with your squad and you'll be fine. If there is any problems you can request to see myself or Lt Quinn. Welcome to the eights Eyeball."

<Tag Eyeball>

"Morse, this belongs to you." He said motioning to Eyeball. " Get him briefed, squared away and ready. He's fresh out of the box Morse, don't break him. Now let's get the snake fighter unloaded. Once that's done you can set up the still that you no doubtedly had sent from home."

<TAg Morse>

Once that was said Dirk walked up the ramp and grabbed a box of ammo. He was still at heart a grunt so when it was time to unload supplies he would help.

Eyeball quickly once-overed his pulse rifle and tapped his holstered vp 70, looking around the compound again he noticed that it really was locked up tight, all weapons were primed and manned, this was a real front line base. he shouldered his pulse rifle then headed back to Morse, seeing him lugging a huge ammo crate Eyeball picked up a smaller one and followed. now carrying all his basic kit and pack as well as the ammo crate he was feeling the strain.

" apparently i belong to you now corporal" placing the ammo crate in what was obviously the armoury. " point me at the squad area i can dump my gear and get back to unloading"

Morse dropped his first box down on the ground at the end of the ships cargo ramp. Though his initial plan was to go all the way to the firebase armory, he concluded it would be easier if all of the equipment was moved off the ship itself first. Though there would be a lot of it, it would not be an overwhelming amount.

Dirk was speaking with the new recruit and Morse continued back up the ramp. He grabbed another box of ammunition. They needed it. Though just one of the boxes would likely due for a very long time, they were preparing for any outcome. Which meant bringing a lot of ammunition.

As Morse began bringing the box down Dirk informed him that the new recruit was in his squad. That was good since Morse liked new people. He did not like that they did not know how to do anything, but it was always good to get a shift in personalities. Otherwise he was just hearing the same stories and that would drive him crazy.

”Don’t know what yer’ talkin’ ‘bout, Dirk.” Morse replied to the comment regarding a still. ”Ems is a perfectly legitimate coolant container n’ pressure control unit.” Morse said without a laugh as he brought the box down.

Morse’s habits were no secret, but this specific one at the moment might be something that they would all thank him for. But they would have to see after he got it set up and see if it would actually run in the conditions they were in.

The new recruit of course addressed him as he was setting the box down when Dirk went to work. ”Right there, that way.” Morse answered pointing towards one of the central structures that they had built up. ”That’s gonna be where yer stuck at till we get a God sent move out order. Drop yer shit, keep yer rifle slung, and come back. At the quick. Run up. Lotsa shit up here to move.”

Morse had had a squad before. He had not been entirely ready for it at the time. This time he was going for a different. He would start explaining their situation soon, but at a more appropriate time given the circumstances.

At Morse's shout Colson picked up his weapon from the table and set up off up the ramp to start humping boxes. This was the part of the job he hated the most, he just wasn't built for it. But he kept his mouth shut and got on with it. Nodding at the new guy, a fellow flesh blood. Introductions could be done later, they had the unload to do first.

"you got it corporal" Eyeball dumped all his gear and then ran back to grab more equipment, another private nodded as he joined the team his name was Colslaw or something, Morse was yelling at him for something, Eyball was not too sure what but figgured he would just keep humping equipment till he was told to stop.

It was only the excitement of his personal requisition that got Mark up the ramp and into the snake fighter with any sense of expediency. Otherwise he might have taken the moment to note that it wasn’t like the drop-ship was going anywhere; it was permanently stationed at the base until they 8s were recalled or the LT ordered it to fly somewhere. Still, protocol was protocol and Giosso himself was excited for some of the materials they’d requested.

At the top of the ramp, the scrawny marine tech slipped in-between a few of his fellow marines carrying boxes and headed to the far side of the cargo bay, where he unhitched the hand-trucks from their storage binders. Dragging two along with him, he headed back to the ramp, wondering yet again why the Marine Corp, in its infinite wisdom, put the dollies on the opposite side of the bay from where they’d be used.

Leaving one where he hoped it’d be noticed by a fellow marine, Mark kicked the hand-truck’s lip under a three-high stack of crates and tipped it back. He spun the stack around and wheeled it down the ramp backwards just as the new blood, eyeball, was on his way back up again. Mark nodded in greeting as they passed.

Morse was moving up to get another box when Colson came up. It had not taken him too long, still Morse was not above letting it go. ”Took yer Limey ass long enough.” He said snidely. ”Yer gettin’ too on the relaxed side with all this rain.” Morse was obviously joking, they had hours to move everything that was there, but he took an opportunity when he could get it.

He had not even noticed Giosso come up to the ship, but Morse rarely took notice of Giosso. The two only really crossed paths when they were eating. They were always in different squads, doing different operations, and for that Morse did not bother with him much. He was the best technician they had, and knew a great deal about electrical equipment that Morse couldn’t even begin to understand. His practical, level headed nature was good in combat, but it didn’t leave any real room for Morse to begin a conversation.

Still being the smart one there, he naturally found the dollies on the other side of the cargo bay that Morse didn’t even notice. ”There’s a good idea.” Morse commented when Giosso left a hand truck there with them.

Loading more boxes on to it to help get the equipment off, Morse saw Eyeball come back over to start helping them. ”How was the sailin’?” Morse asked. ”Roudy? Rough? Couldn’t get no sleep?” Morse asked with a short laugh. He knew the trip always felt instantaneous, and since there was next to no one on the ship the first portion hardly applied. Morse had never flown with a small group like that before, and he was glad that he never did. He’d probably lose his mind.

Duncan looked out over the killzone. The edge of the fortification was dotted with small booths, made of thin aluminum sheets, slanted down towards the moat, nailed to two-by-fours hammered into the ground. Each structure was painted over with brown, marine grade paint. Initially, the idea had been to have a contiguous roof covering the entire perimeter, but the damned wind made it impossible to secure what was essentially a large metal sail. Duncan, who considered this his pet project when not scouting, had put in a fold in the sheets, so that instead of all the rainwater going down the entire front of booths, the water would be channeled diagonally, spouting out and to the left to allow a clear view. In theory at least. It wasn't a proper drain system with gutters, and in bad rains was overwhelmed. Still, it made sentry duty a tad more bearable.

The marine's mind drifted towards the hive he knew was out there, past the cleared vegetation, beyond the horizon. Next to the Weyland-Yutani facility. The fact that the entire area wasn't obliterated by airstrike meant bad news for the marines. The kind of bad news accompanied by the phrase "unique scientific opportunity."

"Damn it all," Duncan said to no one in particular, his view sweeping over the mud of the killzone.

"well it was fine untill some poped my bed and got in with me, which ya know would of been fine normally but it turned out to be colwslaws mum and that was just scary!" eyeball replied as dead pan as he could. " after that and of course the cold i couldn't rise to the occasion so to speak"

Re: Turn 1 Down to Gehenna

Morse thought the joke was funny. Generally he always assumed no one would be able to fight back, since in the platoon no one ever did. This guy, Eyeball, on the other hand did so without a moments hesitation. That was good since he liked it when people talked. Helped make things easier in the combat zone.

But from out of no where Morse had a thought that he had never really had before. Eyeball seemed a bit defiant. A response like that directed at Colson who he didn’t know, stood out to Morse as something someone would do if they were at odds with authority from time to time. Not that Morse was a fount of orderly conduct himself, but he just hoped it wasn’t a sign of difficult times.

Morse gave a short laugh. ”Well you better get to learnin’ how to enjoy all that shit.” Morse said back. ”Cus out here, you’ll see aint no use fer ‘raisin to an occasion’.” He echoed Eyeballs phrase.

Morse moved the crate he was working with down the ramp, unloaded it, and rolled it back up. ”This yer first op I’m figurin’ right Eyeball?” Morse asked, knowing that it was, still needed it clarified.

As Duncan kept watch, movement caught his eye. Resting his sniper rifle on the wall, he looked through the scope. A black dot appeared on the horizon. As Duncan zoomed in, he flipped his comm to Quinn's station.

"Lt. Quinn, I've got movement on the outer perimeter," he said into the mic, as he trained his rifle on the approaching object.

”This yer first op I’m figurin’ right Eyeball?”
"yes corp, basic, security and comms course then a quick snooze as any icy pop, and down here to the real world" Eyeball answered. he grabbed more equipment as he talked and lugged it down to be piled with the other equipment being unloaded.

his joke about colsens mum had got a laugh but also earned him a raised eyebrow and a slight pause before the conversation was changed. hopefully he hadn't pissed anyone off, any way he thought it was funny and pretty quick for spur of the moment.

The knowledge Morse had was confirmed as expected and he nodded. Eyeball didn't exactly hold himself like most fresh marines did, which could be both good or bad. Which Morse was not sure of yet. Odds were it was good thing, since Morse would not have to be explaining every little thing to him on a consistant basis. Still it could lead to issues of him not doing what was told. That had yet to be seen, but Morse did not assume that would be the case.

"Shit." Morse said shaking his head. "The shit I'd give to get popped back in the cryo'n get outa this hell heep." He muttered mainly to himself.

It was not exactly the appropriate time to be explaining the situation, as they were working, but Morse liked to handle things fast. "Don't know what they said to you 'bout this first drop'n'op a yers, but yer up for some fun..."

Morse knew a very limitted amount of the details regarding the Xenomorph species they had been encountering was declasified, but not much at all. They likely told Eyeball a tiny fragment of it, but would leave it to the rest of them to explain. It saved them the trouble if he experienced nothing, or if he died. Rather then have some young recruit running around with some very classified intel.

"Not too much to be honest" said eyeball as they past each other again with more supplies, "said it was a very frontline posting which seemed an odd thing to say, then they said it was a back water place with no level of tech. from what scuttlebut i heard sounded like a restless natives issue with some kind of corperate crap getting in the way, i take it from your imlication that the shit could get real ?" eyeball asked now a little concerned that his first drop could actually be hard combat.
