Turn 2 It Rode a Pale Horse! (Revelation 6:8)

Post by Pale Rider » Mon Dec 09, 2013 4:26 pm

Planet: Gliese 876b
Location: Ekylprillion, Lunar Satellite
Date: October 1st, 2080
Mission Time: 0815

Giosso switched the system over to tag the incoming figure as human and therefore non-hostile. It struggled across the field growing closer before it disappeared into the tiny little creek bed that ran through the section of the Killing Field that Duncan caught the movement in. As he continued to watch the two shapes in the distance were closing fast on the struggling human. When they closed within 500 yards of the Weyland-Yutani employee he realized what he was witnessing it was a race. A race to see whether the human would make the safety of the Easy Eight's Firebase or whether the two warrior drones of the xenomorphs would catch him or her first.

"Lt. we have got Xenos on the six of the incoming human," Duncan relayed to his superior officer.

Looking at them closer he realized that they resembled nothing like the ones he had seen previously. They seemed heavier of breadth and shorter of stature. The normally smooth hide was pebbled and their tail was not as long as previously but it was thicker and a double row of ridges ran down the top. Were they actually a new species or were the Marines encountering the results of Weyland-Yutani's mechanizations. He didn’t have time to ponder these thoughts because the Xenos were closing rapidly on the inbound denizen of humanity.

Mark watched the events unfold through the targeting monitors of the auto-turrets as they jerked around looking for a safe contact. If Duncan fired, the directional override would take over and send a half-second burst at the location he was aiming, but until then they continued on their regular programing. They’d picked up the Xenomorphs now, as the three crossed the creek that marked the unofficial beginning of the kill zone, but between the rain messing with the sensors and the corporate tripping the friendly fire safety, they couldn’t take a shot.

“Sirs,” Mark started, directed primarily at Pitt and Quinn, though he wanted everyone to hear, “The auto-turrets won’t take the shot, now with the friendly in the way. They might get one chance right when he hits the wall, but I wouldn’t count on them.”

Although he hated to admit it to himself, he couldn’t help but consider how easy it’d be to flip the corporate from friendly to ignore and let the turret take its chance. The threat of the Xenos might just be worth it.

Viewing from an opening in one of the metal barricades which were up around the firebase Morse looked over the targets. He could definitively see, as could Duncan, that they were looking at Xenomorphic targets. The one they were directly behind Morse could not quite make out other then it was a human.

The irony of modern warfare was that the heavy machine gun and the sniper both had the longest range and accuracy. But Morse was not generally called on for precision, just as Duncan was not to be called on for suppression. Still they both had the best vantage points on the target, short of a set of binoculars.

”I prolly could shred up the both of em… I’d get at least one of em easy’nuff.” Morse suggested. The rate they were moving wasn’t going to be a problem for the instantly locked on smartgun. The issue would be if one of them took an unexpected move.

Still Morse was not so terribly concerned with that. He did not know who the human at the front was, but he knew it wasn’t one of theirs. And when the Xenomorphs were involved it become a very touchy situation. Still he was not opposed to saving him if they wanted to take that option since there were just the two Xenomorphs ahead.

Duncan inhaled. As it came into focus, he saw the xenomorphs. He looked at the targets calmly. Quinn had given him clearance to shoot any hostiles. Once he saw the xenomorphs, he didn't hesitate. The thunderclap of his gun rang out as he fired at the right xenomorph. The round was a single shot HEAP bullet from a caliber similar to Morse's smartgun. He then swiveled his rifle and aimed at the left xeno. *Thunderclap.* Duncan fired the second shot, hoping he hadn't rescued a burster. "Two pursuers are xenos, kill immediately. Watch the perimeter for infiltration. If the W-Y spurts, drop him!"

Dirk raised his binoculars and watched the deadly race between the W-Y employee and the two new type of Xenos. They were a bit behind him, but they would close the gap quickly. Raceing to the wall he climbed up and looked across the field, taking in the coordanates. If this man was going to live he would have to get him.

"Morse, get your squad up here. We're going to get this poor bastard oput of the fire and find out what the hell he is doing out here on his own."

"LT, Fire mission. Grid 170 elevation 22. Friendly in the open. Fire for effect." Dirk called over the comm, targeting the area behind the running man and in front of his persuers.

"Duncan, keep those bastards under fire. I want those things out of my kill zone, dead or wounded."

Dirk waited for Morse and his squad to join him on the wall so he could make the dash across the field and grab the man.

Though his initial desire was to shoot the targets, Morse also was in favor of rescuing whoever it was that was out there. Duncan took the lead on taking shots on the target, and Morse’s extended sprays would probably not add very much to that situation. If Duncan wasn’t able to hit them then Morse probably was just going to be wasting ammunition attempting to do the same.

Dirk called over to Morse and his squad, who were very close by. Given the size of the firebase, there were many vantage points to take, and Dirk opted for one that was just a tiny bit away. Morse tapped his headset. ”Commin’.”

Morse looked over at his tiny squad of new recruits. ”Come on, prolly movin’ out.” Morse declared. He hurried over towards where was, on his way he looked over at the two that were behind him. ”Not bad fer yer first few minutes a combat duty.” Morse said with a laugh.

They quickly arrived over at Dirk’s position, and Morse opted for chiming in immediately. ”If were goin’, we gotta be goin.” He pointed out. ”Hims might not even know were here, n’ shit there prolly more out there after’em” Morse commented knowing how their specific adversary tended to operate.

Quinn's fingers rapidly danced over the keyboard in the APC, checking the terrain. Couldn't get a shot for the miniguns, and using the cannon to do this brought Confucious to mind. So he set for a three shell barrage from the mortar. "Copy Sergeant, grid one-seven-zero, elevation twenty-two. Ordnance firing, firing, firing."

There was a rapid POONK-POONK-POONK from the APC as three high explosive shells flew out of their tubes, coming down to land in the jungle within seconds of each other.

By this time, the Snakefighter had lifted off with a roar and was in the air, accelerating to an orbiting position about two-thousand feet above the firebase.

Weyland-Yutani Field Operative Kalina Jones' Perspective:
She was frightened beyond comprehension, the day had started off like any other day. She had checked all of her monitors and everything had come up green. Turning to Charlie she signed off and sent him to bed.
"Eagles nest this is Eaglet Sierra Delta 04 reporting in. All systems are green and we are ready to release the test subject into the environment," she reported.
"SD04, proceed with release."
"Roger!"

Leaning over she hit the button that opened one of only two entrances into the redoubt. She felt more than heard the gears engaging as it lifted the blast door. Monitor 6 showed a section of the cliff face recessing and sliding into the ceiling above. A small Huldra tenatively shuffled out. It's head swung as if it was on a pivot scanning it's surroundings.
(To be continued)

Xenomorphs perspective:
The two legged prey racing before her scouts was moving in the desired direction. Suddenly a searing pan lanced through her brain as the lead xenomorphs right appendage exploded; she hissed her anger at this new sensation. She urged them to move faster and to drop to all fours. She couldn't see what had attacked her children but she was too wary to let it attack again.
A whistling sound filled the air followed by a loud roar as her rear scout was flung off it's feet a crumbled pile of Xenomorph slag. Anger quickly replaced the sense of pain and loss as the scout is quickly forgotten. She reaches out and summons more of her children to the place of no cover.

”Come on, prolly movin’ out. Not bad fer yer first few minutes a combat duty.”
"roger that corp right here with you!" eyeball replied to the casual order.

it looked like they may be heading out of the defences to give the human some support. Eyeball checked his comms pad and made sure everyone was correctly tagged as friendly, drill Sargent in basic course had once set a team mates iff to "unknown" sentry guns had scared the crap out of him, if he had been tagged hostile the guns would shredded him, now out of habit he always checked his squad mates.

"we going out there?" eyeball enquired, it wasn't that he was scared, but fight or flight was certainly kicking in.

Colson twitched at the sound of Duncan's rifle opening fire. And even from this distance he could tell not all the shapes out there were human.

When Morse gave the order to get ready to move he noticed the new guy check his tags.
"we going out there?" eyeball enquired,
"Welcome to the corps." Colson replied dryly, feeling that being in front of their own guns was safer than dangling above the enemy by a rope. At least they had someone on the guns as an extra safety.

<Tag Eyeball

Turning to Morse Colson muttered "Hey Morse, are those the things you've been telling me about?" Colson at this point had only seen the facehugger, and judging by the Eights reaction to them he wasn't in a hurry to meet the fully grown xeno's.

Morse looked back as Dirk’s call for mortars was acknowledged with the opening up of tubes firing high explosive shells up into the air. For a moment Morse was not sure what they were going to hit. They were dealing with rather fast moving targets that were not sitting still. But at the same time he did not think that firing mortars was an inappropriate action when dealing with Xenomorphs of the variety they had come across before.

But there was a relatively valuable agent running across the jungle out there, and they needed to go and pick them up.

Hearing Colson’s response to Eyeball’s question Morse gave a light chuckle. ”Fuck ya.” He said. As bad, dangerous, or scary as this seemed to them, it was not quite the same as other ops that Morse had been on before. Here they had the solace of being completely prepared for attack. There were times and places when only the enemy had that advantage.

Morse thought about the question posed to him regarding what the things were that were out there, ”Well.” Morse said, focusing through his eyepiece once more to get a better visual on them. The thousand yard magnification made tracking them easy, but the trees made it difficult to make out. ”Em’s lookin’ a bit different. But its em fer sure’s. I’d say that.” Morse nodded. ”Just keep distance n’ don’t worry too much on how much ammo’d take to drop em low.” Morse concluded. ”Eyeball left, Coleslaw on the right. Stay close n’ keep up.”

He moved up to the end of the wall, where they could get out of the Firebase. Dirk did not leave specific orders on who would run out first. But standard practice would dictate that the Smartgun should go first. And Dirk was a bit old, but he’d keep up with them without any real struggle. ”Right. Lets save a dumb ass Corporate.” Morse finished

”Movin’ out! Keep us covered!” Morse yelled as he began to sprint out of the Firebase. They had a little bit of a trek ahead of them, but it would not be so bad. He hoped the others could keep up, because Morse was very good about fast movement. He had his M56 Smartgun, up. The various metal decorations he had on it jingling as he ran. He did not see any immediate targets but if he did, they’d put them down easy.

"huraah" eyeball replied probably lacking in enthusiasm but his brain was already working over time, scanning left and ahead occasionally behind just to make sure, safety off watching for movement.

At the call for motion trackers Morse was immediately skeptical about their necessity. They were out in the open at the moment, and there wasn’t anything that was in range of the tracker to come at them. It was more of a necessity when did not see your enemy coming, or you were in a location where you could not see everything.

Still it was not a terrible idea when dealing with the Xenomorphs they were destine to see out there. He just hoped they would be dead by the time they got there.

Knock yerself out. Just don’t go screamin’ over no false posi’s.” Morse answered back. He was referring to false positives, which were very prone to happen in the environment they were walking into. If you did not have it calibrated just right, you’d wind up picking up trees blowing in the wind, small rodents, and just about everything else that had a minor change in temperature or moved an inch.

The kneecapping of the Xenomorph caused it to stumble and lose ground for just a second, and that second was enough for it to fall far enough behind for the auto-turrets to pass their safety threshold. The automatic weapons let loose a quick burst, sending fifteen rounds each down range within their ordained accuracy cones.

No longer particularly concerned about the lead two xenomorphs, Mark used the manual controls to spin the turrets back outwords, setting them to scan the edge of the wood for reinforcements. With those back in place, he logged into the rest of the defense network and scrolled through the rest of guns positioned around the base, trying to assure himself they were not being flanked while this whole thing went down.

Weyland-Yutani Field Operative Kalina Jones' Perspective (continued):
The huldra shuffled forward but suddenly raced back into the confines of the enclosure. Before anyone could react a xenomorph darted into the opening. The door crashed down catching the xenomorph at its midriff, the fluid that it used for blood was under enormous amounts of pressure and it exploded outward covering the door and the huldra where it huddled in the shadows. Smoke began to fill the confines of the tunnel as acid began to dissolve the door and the huldra’s screams added voice to the darkness.
A load scratching sound could be heard for any who might be paying attention as more of the xenomorphs attacked the weakened door. Soon a steady stream was penetrating the tunnel. Kalina stabbed frantically at the alarm. She didn’t hesitate any longer than that before she was struggling into the suit designed for exploring the world outside of the observation post. Then she hit the ground running exiting the confines of the outpost at a dead run. Praying that she was fast enough in her retreat, but fearing that she was only minutes away from death; she had run through the jungle and was beginning to think she might have been successful when she heard the first scream that indicated something had taken up her trail. She knew she was a goner but, she wasn’t quite ready to simply lie down and die. She had watched the Huldra being taken by the Xenomorphs and other observation posts and been able to capture one after it had come in contact with a facehugger.
She knew what fate was waiting her should she get caught and that knowledge is what kept her leg’s churning well after an hour of running would have dropped her normally. She saw the plain ahead as she burst through the last of the bush and pushed her muscles even harder. A low whistling sound filled the air and she turned towards the noise and saw a dark mass in the distance. The whistling was followed by an even louder explosion; she immediately turned in the direction of the massing assuming correctly that it might be safety.
