Sal nodded at Sam's assent, and set to pulling tight his gloves and moving any kit that would snag to the side or slung on his back. He imagined a 'professional' climber would worry about struts and pikes, and all manner of harness.

Sal was gonna climb a tree, not much different from climbing some scaffold or machinery when someone was torn up where they couldn't get down for decent patching up. Find the holds, three points of contact, take your time, find a way down later.

"Here's to some imminent violence." He muttered a toast as tightened and tucked in his boot straps.

"Die with a point, yes ma'am." Mark responded, poking at the joke.

He pulled at the adjustment straps of his far-more-heavy-then-he-would-like backpack as he headed out of the dropship and moved with the rest of the squad just off from the direction the Dead Shot had gone. He had the motion tracker out and operating as he moved, keeping his eyes open for anything unexpected – like a separatist guard who just happened to be in their direction. Just in case.

Proceeding with his squad, so far unimpeded, Morse kept an eye on his surroundings. He knew that the plan was simple, but he also knew that their missions rarely went as planned. And even if they were, they weren’t going in a way that made things easy. But he took solace in knowing that they were still essentially enacting a probing assault, which would prompt fewer casualties.

Though they didn’t know the size of the force they were looking at, or their technical capabilities, Morse thought it safe to assume that they were outnumbered, but not outgunned.

While he heard their new commanding officer place faith in their raw ability to smash things, he knew the man misinterpreted their record. While the squad had a record of a high kill count and the ability to break what needed to be broken, Morse was really the only one there that actually had that reputation. The others were fairly with only one full planetary deployment under their belt. But as far as Morse was concerned that was irrelevant, so long as they picked up how to play the game quick enough.

”How we doin’ fuck nuts?” Morse asked the others in the squad. ”Need a breather or a bitch out.” He posed the options not looking back at them and still looking ahead to make sure they didn’t have incoming. ”Cus us is far away, n’ I’m figurin’ I’d rather know now if any yalls got quarrel with the idea a bein’ the bait that bites.”

Morse had not asked his squad what their thoughts were on the plan. But unlike some, he questioned his orders a lot, and he didn’t exactly see himself as the untouchable figure of authority that some squad leaders did. Just a permanent fixture in the squad known as the ‘Dead Shots’

Private Bell, aka Bluegrass, aka Fuck Nuts, was thankful for all the downtime spent in the gym, because that sentry gun case was mean HEAVY. Hauling and cussing he was already breaking a sweat.
”Need a breather or a bitch out?”
He figured there was no good answer to that question. Having his hand tied away from his weapon made him feel powerless and wound up. So he chose to be irritating.

“Boss, is what you’re saying that we’ve been carrying a bitch just in case? Is that what makes this damn box so heavy and precious?”

Bell did try to keep a nervous eye out for any opposition, but overall concentrated his efforts on moving the crate, which is what was asked of him. Besides, with Morse’s survival record, he should be keen enough and on his toes for all of them.

Morse got the idea that they didn’t fully understand his question, but the new guy made a fairly valid joke which made him laugh. He continued to look around the trees, but so far as he could tell there was nothing there. If they were lucky they would be able to just sit there and not have to worry about anything till they came across it, but the reality was whatever found them would be lucky if they walked away alive.

”Don’t got a lotta use fer em out here. That’s more home time fun.” Morse was generally good at keeping his mind on the mission. ”What I’m sayin’ is, any the rest yall got issue with what the fuck were. Hell aint but one a yous even born on the Almighty’s Earth as it is, n’ I’m figurin’ aint none a you got a lotta trigger time with somethin’ what’s actually shootin’ back.” Morse commented.

While Morse had learned under fire, and respected the ability to do what one needed to do, he also knew that people had brains and that it wasn’t likely they were the empty shells that the USCMC hoped they were.

To this point Colson had kept his mouth shut, his full attention on dragging the sentry gun case along. When Morse asked his question first time round he let silence be his answer and grinned at the green's off colour joke but when Morse asked again Colson replied.

"What's there to say Morse?" He replied, "Nothing is likely to change despite what I say. So as I see it, business as usual. Head down and shoot anything that looks at me sideways." He finished, panting, not the strongest of marines and this was the second time he'd been on heavy hauling duty. ""Oh, and plug any holes that appear in you guys when you stand up at the wrong time." He said glibly, slipping in the dirt with the case. "And least you forget Yank, I'm as Sol born as you are." He added after deciding Morse had ignored, intentionally or otherwise, Colson's origins.

There was no where for Morse to disagree with Colson’s logic. Of course there was nothing for them to do in terms of changing the plan. Anything that they did at that point would just put themselves, and the platoon as a whole, at risk. But it wasn’t as though Morse disliked the plan as it was. He just wanted to clear up anything that they may have thought of, and of course put them all down for being ‘lesser beings’ for not having been born in the glorious South as he had.

”Least someone’s gettin’ the Dead Shot montra good n’ strong.” Morse commented on Colson’s response. ”N’ right… I forget cus you talk funny like someone’s what’s not been born under the splender a the one good Sun.” Morse spoke, with a very clear sense of irony. He knew damn well that he was the only person the entire platoon, but it didn’t keep him from accusing all the others from being strange.

Thus far, Quinn had been keeping quiet while moving along with Morse and the rest of his squad through the jungle. Apparently, either Morse had forgotten he was there, or far more likely, didn't give a flying fuck. He knew Marines bitched (and in certain cases, A LOT), but Morse and his squad were abusing the privilege.

Sixtus was currently on the position of tail-end charlie since the rest of the squad was either on point or hauling the cases with the sentry guns.

"And you forgot the Terran back here, fuck nut." he growled, his eyes watching the trees around them. He felt for the small datapad he carried. It was currently set on the map function and showed the current location. "Ten more klicks to go."

The local wildlife grew quiet as the Eights made their way through the forest of trees and thick underbrush. Then it happened the dreaded sound all foot soldiers dread, an audible click fills the silence. The sound of a landmine being engaged. Looking down Morse sees that his left foot has engaged the pressure plate.

The quiet had been a good thing for their approach. The fact that the Marines had heard nothing was generally a sign that they had the element of surprise, or they were in the wrong place. Either way Morse did not care since it meant that they weren’t going to get shot at unless it was one their own terms.

”Sometimes ya wonder if were even…” Morse was started some more banter for the sake banter, when suddenly he felt his boot connect with something that felt different. It wasn’t ground, it was harder. It gave a click, but not the snap of a twig breaking under his boot.

”The fuck?” Morse said looking down at his foot. His eyes drifted quickly, and he looked back up. Then he looked back down again for good measure. At first he didn’t see it, since it was covered in the foliage. But then he noticed something metallic, that most certainly wasn’t a natural feature of the land.

”Aw, Christ.” Morse groaned, realizing that he was standing in a very bad situation, on top of a land mine. ”Dead shots… Stop yer movin’.” Morse ordered them.

<Tag 2nd Squad

He sighed a moment, and shook his head, more in a cynical disbelief of what was happening then a fit of rage. ”Sneaky Colony fucks.” He continued to mutter.

Holding his M56 Smartgun with one hand, Morse then moved his finger to his ear to put out an all call to the platoon. ”Does any a you got extensive knowledge on the hows’ in regards to disablin’ a land mine... cus it looks like I’m standin’ on one.” Morse asked with a sort surreal bitterness, not fully grasping if he was completely screwed or not.

For all of his training, Morse had only a very basic understanding of land mines, but the idea of disabling one he was standing on with all of his gear, was not something he was readily willing to try.

Colson was busy pulling the sentry gun along and absorbed keeping it moving and it's noise down he didn't hear the out of place click but he did hear the order. Coming to a stop at Morse's command he started to scan the forest around. Nothing, quiet, but there was nothing around he could see so why had Morse ordered them to stop, that's when Morse's transmission came in.

He then froze to the spot, almost afraid to move. As he had no advice to offer at this point he kept quiet and his eyes on the surroundings, well, one eye on the forest the other on the ground around him.

Roberts felt his blood run cold. Was he about to witness the death of the seemingly invincible Morse? He was afraid for Second Squad, but also afraid of what a land mine explosion would bring down on all their heads. The worst feeling was the helplessness. He didn't know explosives that well. He knew his way around grenades and grenade launchers, but he didn't know land mines. Roberts made eye contact with Sam, the fear evident in his eyes.

After a few seconds he turned around and scanned the trees, trying to focus on the things he could control. He kept an eye out through his Infra-red eyepiece and prayed in his head. His instinct was to speak, but the last thing they needed was unnecessary chatter. He kept a special eye out for any more land mines.

After scanning the ground around him and under the gun crate, Bell set it gently down. He then unslinged his weapon, put a knee to the ground and scanned the area. Once he was satisfied no one would shoot at him in the immediate future he sighed deeply, slinged his rifle and got on his belly. He then started gently raking the grass with his fingers and prodding the ground with his knife, trying to clear a path to Morse. Also, mainly, tried not to blow up.

"At least its not raining."

Dirk half grinned as Sam addressed him by his former rank. It seemed that in the platoon, actual rank took second place to what the Marines considered to be the proper rank. Flicking the cigarette he nodded at her thoughts. "Ya, that sounds like the way to go. Morse already moved his people out, I figure we should move out too. Good luck Sam, keep your head down."

"Ok third, let's move out. Remember, first and second will be in and around our kill zone so watch your fire and check your targets. These bastards will be trying hard enough to kill us, lets not do their jobs for them. Lets hit it." He said as he took point and moved out to a left side flanking position.
