Scarlet Burnside was very anxious about what was happening on this mission. They get some vague instructions and mission specs indicating that the whole colony was missing, and now these harvester things just tried to bury us or haul us away to eat us all. She went through the motions of getting up the rope to ground level. She watched as a harvester suddenly grabbed ahold of Dirk's foot. Something inside her snapped.

"No!" she suddenly yelled loudly. "No!......No!"

She raised the end of the flamethrower above the back of the creature holding on to Pitt and let a burst of fire roar above the creature and started to bring it across the creature's back.

As quickly as it was visible the harvester that grasped onto Dirk vanished into the shadows. The remaining of the Harvesters slowly advanced on the Eights. Only to find that flesh, bone, and extremely thick epidermis are no match for the heavy fire that streamed down into them. One by one they died with the last one collapsing within inches of Jacobson's feet. "LT, the situation down here has cleared up only a little. Corporal Pitt has been taken down one of these tunnels," he quickly spoke into the microphone, "I am taking squads First and Second down into the tunnels. Third will remain above here to maintain the perimeter."
Clicking over to the Company wide channel, "Eights, I want the First and Second on me. Third I am leaving you above with the LT to maintain the perimeter."

As soon as everyone had gotten into place the Marines headed out."

<Actions>
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Harvester rumbled along dragging the limp soft meat in her jaws. Dirk's head bounced on the uneven surface. The glare from the light began to vanish as she moved deeper into the tunnel system that led into their lair. Here was another piece of meat for their larders to help fatten them up as they prepared to sleep during the harsh glare time. This one had a strange taste, not something she would prefer to eat but she would have to put on the fat so that she could feed her young as they began to grow within her. She had already picked out her mate for this season.

"Dirk!" cried Eric with dismay. He could do nothing but keep laying down fire as his friend vanished from sight.

After the last of the creatures were dead, he looked down the different tunnels. "Giosso, try to raise him on the comms! Maybe you can find his location!"
<Tag Giosso>

Without waiting for a response he tried calling into his own headset. "Dirk! Dirk! This is Roberts, do you read me? Over."
<Tag Dirk>

Roberts turned to Jacobson. "Do we know what tunnel he went down? Maybe we should split up to cover more ground."

Jacob took up position. Alert and ready, disappointed to be left on the perimeter with a pretty unchatty bunch of people. He maintained discipline and procedure though.

He hoped Dirk was OK, he wanted to be in pursuit... But Morse was, and that guy would be relentless. His eyes darted around, and he felt his heart beating slowly. Steadily. Nothing to do but wait, and not switch off...

As Morse realized that Dirk was being carried away in to the dark, Morse had no moment of mental quandary. While when the younger, and more inexperienced, marines got pegged and pulled it gave him a pause for thought. They had always made mistakes. Not listened to an order, not complied with a plan, or were not attuned to the situation. Though Morse would give it a moment, he'd consider how badly the soldier was gone before he moved to do anything.

Dirk was different. The decades of travel around the galaxy left him one of the most efficient marines alive. And having spent nearly his entire career under his command, Morse was not looking to have that situation change with an empty casket.

"Aw Fuck!" Morse spat, unloading a rail of shots towards the creature that was carrying Dirk away. He failed to strike it as the other creatures got in the way, but he took solace watching them get torn to pieces and landing on the ground.

"Dirk!" Morse roared out, but the creature had already carried him off into the Darkness.

Morse was not stupid, he'd be as prepared as ever.

Slinging his M5 Rocket Launcher around, he loaded his last rocket into the tube, heard it sing a "Bweeep!" to note it was primed. He reached down to his robotic leg and unsnapped a fresh drum, and snapped it into his M56 Smartgun, the various charms and decorative pieces swinging and clinking together.

He had done all of this while marching forward. Though the Sergeant was calling out orders to pursue, Morse was already preparing to take point.

"Let's Move!" Morse spat, his red eye down. "Tracker'on. Find me a screecher." Morse demanded them to find him a target, not caring who utilized to the motion tracker to do so.

The units slipped into the dark tunnels following in the wake of the retreating Harvester. The air grew thick with condensation as they traveled deeper underground. The Motion Tracker showed Dirk Pitt's Id marker moving approximately 500 yards in front of them when all of a sudden it stopped.

"Alright Marines Fan out. I don't want to miss Dirk," the Sargent called out.

Roberts followed the tunnel with his smartgun at the ready. It brought back memories of his first mission in the Zenus Vier hive tunnels. He shivered at the memory then refocussed on the present.

Suddenly, the tunnel seemed to widen out into a cavern and the marines lost the safety of the covered flanks. Roberts had his shoulder light on and his infrared sensor over his right eye. Nothing was gonna get past him. His mind jumped back to his scout training, and he began to search for any sign of Dirk or the creature. "Dirk!" he called out, then went silent and waited for a response. All the while he advanced and scanned all around him for anything.

Juan Perez was not that type of guy, that opened up to other persons easily. Quite the contrary. So, since leaving the cryo-tube, he stayed in the background. They left gateway for a mission to the tartarus sector just one day after his assignment to the Easy Eights, so there was no time to get to know anyone anyway. At least, he gave his superiors no room for complaints. He did all the preparatory routines, followed orders without hesitation and showed no signs of dislike. And he observed his new comrades carefully. It was astonishing, what someone can learn about other persons, if he just observed and listened. Of course he was not really part of the team yet, he was just ... the new guy. But he watched and observed and ... learned. the game was to find the right place to fit. But that was future.

At present, their mission turned from a bad dream into a nightmare. It all started easy, even after it was clear, that the colony did not suffer a technical communication problem or stuff like that. They boarded the APC and the dropship took them to the ground. They approached the colony and then ... first and second squad were ambushed by those ... things. Juan was part of the third squad and he provied cover fire, as ordered. Which was not that easy, because priority number one was not to turn cover fire into friendly fire. So he fired only, if clear shots could be taken and that was the rare occassion in this kind of mess. Worse still, one of those ... things grabbed this Pitt-Guy and took him along into their tunnels. Juan was horrified for a moment, realising the fate of Pitt.

Resisting his instinctive desire to jump into this hole in front and try to save him, he regained self control and did, what he was ordered to do. Cover the APC and the rear area. Like most of the smartgunners, he did not wear a combat helmet, just the M56 combat harness and a cap with the USCM insignia. After the harverster ambush he checked and double checked the weapon and reloaded. Then, he patrolled the perimeter as ordered. He nipped from a tube from time to time, which was connected to his belt-bottle, allowing him to drink without having to use hands. The high-potential energy drink boosted his awareness, reflexes and concentration and he had this kind of feeling, that he would need that. The barrel of the mounted smartgun moved slowly from one side to the other, looking for a valid target.

Just as he paused for a brief moment, he saw something. At least, he meant to have seen something, but he was not sure. There, again. For a short period of time, something stuck its head out, and this something looked not human. Was it 100 yards? And then he concentrated and waited. After ten seconds or so, he saw it and this time, he was sure. Grewing up in the streets of south-central LA he had developed this kind of gut-feeling, that something was not right and it was exactly this kind of feeling, that he felt now.

So he opened up a channel to third squad and the LT ...

"Lt Gruber, Corporal Carson, i had clear visual on .... something, maybe one of those harvester things. Stuck its damned head out for seconds at least three times, round about 100 yards away from my position. it might by, that we are being scouted, Sir."

... he reported with his spanish accent and after a brief hesitation he added ...

"There might be an ambush impending, Sir."

<Tag Gruber>
<Tag Carson>
<Tag Third Squad>

... very slowly moving backwards, retreating to the APC, he concentrated on his senses and watched the environment carefully. If those things would show up, he would give'em hell. Being on his first combat drop, he wondered, why he was not that kind of scared, what he expected to be. Did he ... began to like this?

Pulling ahead Morse maintained a stance at the center. With a notation of Dirk being five hundred yards away, it wasn't exactly a short walk. Still he was lethal up to fifteen hundred yards so he kept a keen vigil in every direction. Bugs like this did not scare Morse as much as they once did. He knew that nothing could realistically take him alive. He'd either go down fighting or leave a piece behind rather then get stuck in a trap.

Fighting Colonists was what scared him. A technically matching and an evenly placed frontal cortex left a truly confusing game of strategy ahead. In hear, Morse knew that they were likely walking into some sort of nest, or hive, or something you'd never see on Earth. But animals acted the same. When they felt an advantage or if they were desperate, they'd attack. If they felt scared or uncertain, they ran. And if they reversed those orders, they died. Morse had been more then happy to lay low everything that came in front of him for years, human or otherwise. Fighting various forms of life was always satisfying because they tended to strike first, and he was the righteous hand of humanity teaching them their place in the stars.

His M56 Smartgun at the ready, he continued to scan forward, ready for any sign of movement. He would not need an order to fire, he would not need to request to kill. Morse was a creature of instinct, Morse was a man of action, Morse was a Colonial Marine. He'd go down with finger on the trigger and time locked grenade before anything silenced him or stopped his work.

And so he progressed ready for whatever would come.

"Someone keep an eye on the 'tracker" Giosso called out taking a quick glance around to see if another member of the team was going to take that as an invitation to pull there own, or to take his off his hands. Once his hands were free, the commtech drew his datapad from a slot on his obnoxiously heavy backpack. The screen flickered to life with the Marine's classic green on black, running the initial access lines. After a few quick taps along the screen's keyboard, Mark was into his communication unit's advanced settings. He tuned the system to ping and detect Dirk's comms signal.

He was carrying 15 pound of radio designed to reach orbit from the middle of a bunker - if anything was going to contact the sargent, this would.

Scarlet pulled out her motion tracker and cut it on attaching it to her flame thrower. As they progressed down the tunnel, she listened to the tones of the machine and occasionally glanced down at the unit to try and help determine where Dirk or more of these giant ugly hamsters might be.

Samantha had let her fears of something truly horrifying happening to Dirk; the heart and soul of the platoon; cloud her mind for far too long. She had found herself aimlessly standing by as Roberts rushed off and Giosso and Burnside worked on a way to home in on Pitt's signal while still keeping an eye on the tracker. Shaking her head to snap back to the present, she called our orders after clapping Mark on the back and saying; "Good thinking"....

"Okay, Roberts slow down and stay with us. I want Dirk back too, but getting lost by yourself out there won't help anyone. Scarlett; call out if you see any signals and Mark, direct us when you've got a bead on Pitt's location." She then switched to the platoon wide channel and called out; "This is Hall; Giosso is trying to hone in on Pitt's signal and when he gets a fix he'll call it out. Copy?"

She moved to a position just behind Scarlett and Giosso with Roberts in the lead, keeping a close eye out in all directions, especially behind them; to make sure they weren't ambushed in these tunnels. "Keep alert and stay frosty Eric"; she said in what she hoped was s soothing tone to the Smartgunner leading the squad.

"Copy that, Sam," Roberts said reluctantly. He felt like a horse pulling at the bit. He wanted to find Dirk NOW, but he had to trust his squadleader's instincts.

He was swimming in the darkness, unsure where he was and only knowing he must get to shore. There was an urgency to his swimming though. Something was there with him, pulling him under. The pain started to swell. Dull at first, then sharper and sharper until his eyes fluttered open and the memory of what had happened to him came flooding in. "Damn." He thought. "Like a new private getting dragged away by the foot." Looking around he finally noticed that he was buried up to the neck. Damn, served up like dinner.

Looking around he couldn't see much in the darkness, vague shadows and movement. Only the strong smell of earth and rot moved around him. His helmet was gone, taking with it his comm mic. Moving his hands and feed as best he could Dirk tried to loosen the earth that held him tight.

Eric's trained eyes scanned the rocky ground, dimly outlined by the light of his shoulder-lamp. He noticed nothing that gave him any indication of anything. Then he heard a faint coughing and straining sound forward and to his right. "Sam, I hear something," he whispered to his squad leader. Without waiting for a response he moved quickly towards the sound. He tried to move as lightly as he could with his heavy smartgun, so as not to cover any further noise or alert an enemy to his presence. A twinge of fear ran up his backbone, but it was dominated by his will to find Dirk immediately.

Eric scanned the cave in front of him with his infrared eyepiece and with his naked left eye.
