Interlude: A Bug Hunt

Post by Pale Rider » Fri Jun 01, 2018 2:50 am

May 31, 2184
Location: Helix, New Eden Sector
Conspiracy Level: 3
Mission Time: 00:00:00

It has been five years since both failed attempts were sent to Acheron. Five members of the team survived and were farmed out to different units as the Easy Eights were refilled and outfitted for other missions. These five survivors were forcibly recommended to sign off on Confidentiality Agreements. They were to never speak of what they had witnessed on that inhospitable planet.

During the five ensuing years rumors began to circulate concerning the wholesale disappearance of colonies on small backwater planets. At the request of several High Ranking officials among the big five Corporations:
  • BIO-NATIONAL INTERNATIONAL “BIO-NAT” - the largest medical conglomerate around.
GRANTCORP - Daniel Grant’s Corporation started his childhood dream in his basement when Weyland Yutani was controlling the spacelanes. As he acquired mining rights and medical grants, he and his staff developed advanced technologies that were more than just effective, they were cheap. GrantCorp offered low-grade alternatives to the huge marked-up products of larger corporations that cornered the market in their field.
WEYLAND - YUTANI (“The Company”) - A joint stock corporation that works closely with world governments in the areas of space exploration, commerce, colonization, and military trading.
HYPERDYNE SYSTEMS - Once the largest corporations around until Weyland Yutani sprouted.
CENTRAL SPACE CONSORTIUM “C.S.C.” - A baker's dozen of corporations felt the tight arm of their huge brethren clenching tightly. Large conglomerates covered many fields but these small corporates specified their areas.
A special Unit was created. This unit would remain off the record books and answered only to the Secretary of Defense, Johann Strauss.

On Board the USS Heimlich, a small craft dreamed up by the joint committee of the big five. The Devil Dawgs were awaking to life in the fast lanes, the Heimlich would function as their Dropship and Interstellar vessel. The unit was sitting around their briefing table as Gunner Eagle explained the scenario for them.
"Okay boys and girls, it seems that some group within their infinite wisdom decided to take one of those bugs that we have all encountered in our careers to study. Bio-Nat has called on us to head over to their secret laboratory on a satellite orbiting Helix in the New Eden Sector. These smart men and women took a queen in and allowed her to breed. It seems their security measures worked a little to well for them. One of the Xenomorphs breeched their holding cell and the entire system shut down tighter than a virgin on her first date. It is our job to get in and contain the breech with as little damage as possible. Our orders are to kill all the drones and warriors of the queen but keep her highness alive. Last count has there being some 15-25 drones and 1 or more queens." James stopped and looked around the table allowing the information to settle. "Do we have any questions? If not go get your gear together we will be docking with the satellite in 30 minutes!"

Missions were simple now, and in a way life was good. There were fewer questions and less to answer to. The mission was first, collateral damage was not an issue. The rules of engagement were burned out of the play book like some old text lost in a temple fire in ancient times. There was no weakness, there was consensus. There was no morality, there was the engagement. There was no unexpected turn of events, there was the truth.

And now that they were always being told the truth of what they were walking into, rather then fed a half lie and forced to figure out the rest, they weren't failing anymore.

To Morse the Easy Eights had always suffered from its status. Regardless of being specialized and experienced Colonial Marines, their existence as line unit had left them a toy for the abuse of others. Now evolved to the Recon that was the Devil Dawgs, they could call shots as they saw fit. They were the hammer that drove in a nail, and that did not matter if the nail needed to be bent and broken to it. All that was sure was that the nail would be driven in one way or another.

"Civilian casualties." Morse mentioned. "Acceptable or recommended?" Morse's question was on that he was very good about asking, especially since the rules were were so different. They were not there to save people on site, that was a given. But if they came up, he needed to know whether it was alright to catch them in the line of fire... or if they were also part of the target for what they knew and what they could do.

James turned his head to face Morse, the two had served together ever so briefly a lifetime ago. He remembered Morse as always being direct.
"The way I see it if they worked there they are not civilians but a part of the problem. However, we still answer to a higher power so if there is 50% you can drop a Xenomorphs and save the staff go for it. Any children we save them period because they didn't ask for this crap."

He stood up and walked to the screen and tapped on the image of a Xeno.
"These beasts are nothing to play with and obviously, someone thought they could tame them. I am not gonna risk Marine lives save their sorry butts," he pivoted around on his heel, "anyone have a problem with that? Oh and one more thing with the nature of the Xenomorphs there are probably no uncompromised civilians or Guinea pigs left! Does that answer your questions Morse?"

Another glorious day in the corpse started and ... things have never been the same again since the Archeron incident. Perez knew, what the enemy would be, as soon as his cerebral functions kicked in. Luxury or damnation? He was not sure, even after five years.

This time, some geniuses tried to tame the beasts. Clever idea. The problem was, those creatures are not meant for taming. The geniuses always learn this lession by the hard way. At least they were smart enough to use a satellite station, so per force the hive would be quarantined to a small outbreak. One saving grace.

After Chief finished the short introduction, the word came civilian casulties. Perez had another topic ...

"What about Security? Some automatic and autonomuous Top notch gear, i suppose?"

Nodding in affirmation James looks over at the Devil Dawgs Smart Gunner. "Perez, you are correct. Evidently, they didn't spare any expenses. So not only do we have Xenos but, we also have to worry about them as well."

He depressed a button and the satellite changed to show the blueprints. (I will draw something up this evening)

"All things considered, I think I'd rather deal with an overly secured station then a poorly secured one. At least the security measures should give us some kind of control and ability to monitor the situation. Might even get lucky and find the targets nicely boxed in."

Mark took another sip of his marine-latte while he ran the mission over in his head. "They're not asking us to extract the Queen, right? Just kill everything on the station other than her."

Perez listened to Chief's and Giosso's replies, while sipping his favorite energy drink slowly ...

"Wait a minute, Giosso, are you saying, that you can hack the security systems and control them? That would be to good to be true."

... and facing Chief ...

"It seems to be a good shot anyway, going for the security central first. Or do we have booked all-inclusive and the self-destruction sequence has been activated"

"Well," Giosso replied, starting to wonder about exactly that. He was good, but so were the Corps and they didn't always share information on their best toys with the Marines. "If I can't, we'll be stuck using Morse's door-openers at every room. However, if we can get into the main control room, I should be able to get into the station's security system. At least get eyes and ears if not doors and guns."

Lopez had been completely quiet until now because he had been going completely over all the specifics of Xenomorphs and the structural integrity, blueprints, and schematics of the entire base that they were about to invade for lack of a better word. " from what I can gather, and correct me if I'm wrong cuz this my first time dealing with Xenomorphs in live-fire," look past again is it giving you a formal lecture on the entire situation," but it looks like to me 324 will place charges can drop the entire structure on the in the mass of enemy. Considering the previous actions of this particular type of Xenomorph, the queen will probably be in the deep underground."

Danny Sykes had grown older and a little wiser over the past five years. His Brevet Commission had not been confirmed, but his brief command had been a springboard to promotion, and now he was Sergeant First Class. His optimism may have faded slightly with age and care, but looking around the room at old friends brought the familiar grin to his face.

"Perez, you old son of a bitch! Can't believe they haven't thrown you out yet! It's been too long," he said with a grin.

He greeted all his old comrades in turn before listening to the briefing intently.

Morse heard what he needed to hear. He was obviously not the one to begin opening fire on children, but having seen and dealt with the things that they endeavored to fight, he saw those responsible with their creation as little more then biblical vermin that it was an almost holy duty to rid the universe of. He said nothing in response. All other details he could certain fill in upon their arrival at the situation. It was likely nesting procedures had already long since taken place and that there would be little to no capability of getting a scan of the area accurately.

Upon the question regarding Giosso's capacity, Morse gave a chortle. He was the best Com-Tech in the Corps, and certainly had enough experience getting into systems the good old american way, assuming Morse's way wasn't working. But that would not likely be his position this time, as he could already sense the medical kit being strapped to him. "He'll get in." Morse commented. "Shit if we spun around to the Wey-Yu vaults, he'd probably get into those too."

There was one part of the mission that was a bit concerning to Morse, as the things that occurred on them were rarely similar to what was planned on when it came to the Xenomorphs, so Morse had to venture to ask.

"So don't the Queen... my recollection says she's got more of a habit of trying to kill us." Morse noted. "If its her or us, I'm assuming the fallout won't be too bad if she goes away... specially since I'm curious why she's bein' left alive at all?"

Samantha just held her head in her hands for a long few minutes as she heard that some idiot Corporation in its 'infinite wisdom' had decided to play around with the galaxy's most efficient killing machine for some dumb-ass reason that presumably involved making money for said morons.....

Sighing, she at last raised her head up and asked with her strong Carribbean accent; "Deese tings survive in vacuum, right? Why not just punch a hole in the side of de satelite and when dey all come floating out....just grab de Queen and shoot de rest wit' a Dropship or someting?"

OOC: Nice to be back in a mission again! Also....in the USMC there is no Sergeant First Class (Danny Sykes character); instead an E7 is a Gunnery Sergeant (usually called 'Gunny' or 'Guns')....but, in an alternate future universe with a 'Colonial Marine Corps' whatever ranks you like works! :)

A quick trip in space found the Devil Dawgs docking with the Space Station. The vessel synced up with the outer hatchway.

“Giosso, your on deck let’s see what we can find behind door number 1,” James commanded.

He turned and looked at the remainder of the crew. Okay folks let’s get our gear prepped
And on. Double and triple check each other. Once we step away from the ship we will on our own.!”

Sergeant Sara Wang spent the entirety of the briefing standing nervously on the periphery of the group, rotating her helmet around and around in her large hands. Upon its conclusion she fitted it awkwardly onto her head and tucked her self-cut bangs out of her eyes. She stared warily around the room at her old co-workers, clearly having some mixed feelings about the reunion. She gave an little wave here and there, catching the eye of some but not all of the marines.

Sara had spent the last five years completing her doctoral dissertation on the creatures they'd discovered on the last mission, only to have had it confiscated by the authorities when it was found to be in violation of her nondisclosure agreement. She'd returned to the corps for another front-lines encounter with the beasts, hoping that another experience would reveal a loophole through the future of the legal situation and allow her to publish her research. The mission of the scientists had piqued her curiosity, but by now she knew better than to openly express such intrigue in front of the other marines.

Despite being stripped of her briefly-held PhD, her subsequent educational achievements had allowed her to land a promotion to Sergeant and Communications Chief. While grateful for the pay increase, she had been concerned that it would come with a regular command, and she breathed a sigh of relief as she was placed under the command of Staff Sergeant Morse.
