Mission 3 Turn 7: Fireteam Alpha

Post by Corporal Hicks » Thu Jan 02, 2020 2:11 am

The rain pelted down on Morse’s helmet as he raised his pulse rifle. His hands moved with practiced ease as he lined up the head shot and squeezed off the burst. The human-like face at his feet exploded with a spray of white gore. The rounds of Quinn and Hall thudded into the android’s body for good measure. (Roll: critical success)

The marines and sailors prepared to breach the facility. The sniper-spotter team jogged to catch up with the rest of the unit. The fresh rainwater was already pooling up in the plastic tubs laid out by the synthetics, but their human overseers were unlikely to reap the benefit now. No doubt whoever lived in this facility had grown used to the safety provided by their isolation.

The Navy crewmen moved up and covered the entrance to the facility while Fireteam Alpha moved in. Sergeant Hall, Corporal Barayev, and Lance Corporal Paulson took point. As they entered the facility the metal floor-grill clanked under their feet. The walls were dimly lit by reddish light. The hallway was wide enough for three to walk beside each other. It had a slight downward incline. Twenty meters in was a T-intersection.

“Look out!” called Seaman Stark, but it was too late. The heavy metal door slammed shut in front of the Fireteam Bravo, no doubt activated remotely. Fireteam Alpha was stranded inside!

Fully living up to their staus as "Apex Predators", the marines made quick work and dispatched the two waterboys. Bullets threw them apart, revealing their synthetic identity. White colored liquid spoke for itself. Unfortunately, his smartgun denied to fire because of an IFF issue. Mumbling a few curses, Perez fixed the IFF issue of his smartgun and rebooted the tracking system. Meanwhile, Morse ordered a breach and Fireteam Alpha, consisting of Paulson, Baryev and Hall, entered the structure already.

Slowly advancing towards the still open entrance and covering Fireteam Alpha's advance in the process, he waited for Quinn, Sokolova, Giosso and Morse to catch up. And then IT happened. With a sudden and unexpectedly fast movement, the entrance-doors closed. Shit. Fighting back his first impulse to try to kick that damned door open, he thought about the situation for a second ...

"Giosso, move up and check the door. Quinn, Sokolva, search the rest of the androids, maybe there is a door-control device. I cover you."

Communication with Fireteam alpha is completely cut off, they do not hear Perez’s question.

Mark was only a pace away when the heavy metal door began to close. He had to fight the instinct to reach out and try to hold it open. It would have been futile at best, with an injury just as likely. He likewise resisted the urge to pound on the door once it had finished closing. It would have been equally futile, though with less chance of injury. Instead, he let out a sharp sigh marked with a look of annoyed anger that was, in general, as close as he came to swearing.

A moment later, when Sgt. Perez ordered him to check out the door, Mark was already holstered both the pistol and the motion tracker. He was running his fingers over the walls around the doorway, searching for a seam or any kind of clue as to how he might hotwire the door or gain access to their systems with the tools available to him.

Dmitri formed up with Paulson and Hall and walked in with them. What he saw was creepifying but not exactly fear-inducing: it was just a man-made corridor in a man-made structure that unknown men and women had made.

No, what he looked for were ambush points and hostiles lying in wait.

After all, while they could be walking into a facility filled with people who might be benign, the rifle carried by one of the synthetics made that unlikely. It was more likely they were walking into a garrison filled with people ready to kill them right quick.

So, really, when the door behind them slammed shut, Dmitri flinched but he couldn't honestly say he was surprised by it. Maybe it was just a fact of Russian DNA, but it fell in line with his general expectation that things could always be worse. And hard on that resignation was further confirmation that things had, indeed, gotten worse. The soft hiss of the team channel in his ear went to dead air as his comms went down. They were cut off physically and communicatively from their fellow Marines.

They were alone in this.

"Sam, my com's out. I'm not getting anything," Dmitri said. Despite his expectation, maybe the Universe would throw them a bone and his comms would be the only one down. Yeah, and maybe we'll all get a pony and a blow job, too.

With that morose thought, Dmitri backed up to the door and started looking for any controls he might find to open it again. He kept his rifle secured by ready and his head on a swivel. It was all well and good to look for a switch but stupid as hell to get shot in the back by hostiles while looking for it.

the door slammer close just behind Paulson infact he was fairly certain it had hit his ass on the way down. now he covered the right flank his pilot light glowing but other wise trying to remain calm and patient,
"comms down here too" he reported back, "does that mean no blow jobs cos i was hoping" he added.
still looking right he got out his motion detector and ran a scan.

"I found something, sir." Mark announced as his fingers traced the small square. He slid a fingernail under the panel and lifted, exposing it as a supposed all-weather cover that was never intended for the kind of perpetual wetness and near virulent vegetation that this planet provided. Mildew, fungus and other biofilms had claimed the tiny, dark alcove as their own. Mark ripped a broadleaf off a nearby ground plant and used it to wipe away the living slime before tossing it away.

"Looks like a control panel of some kind. Hasn't seen much use," he called back. ."I'll see what I can do with it."

Mark pulled the multitool out of its rugged synthetic case and selected a flathead that, in all honesty, had found more work as a prybar then a screwdriver. With one last disparaging glance at the dirty growth, he dug in.

"Don't worry, Paulson," Dmitri chuckled. "The night's still young. Someone'll turn up happy to oblige."

Dmitri called over to Sam next.

"Sarge? Should we wait for Fireteam Bravo? Or go on ahead?"

The door slammed shut, separating the the unit. Not ideal, but not a deal breaker. It did not sound like mulching or grinding or flames or screaming beyond, so that was a good sign. They had likely entered into a trap, but that was not to say that they were dead. Marines were dangerous animals to try to trap. Any attempt to do so often could result simply in an even more lethal enemy that their adversaries may not have been prepared for. Not necessarily because of controlled breathing, but more the hail of bullets that could be released in a fury if they were in too much of a panic.

Morse opted to turn away from the door. "Giosso, dig around in that shit n' see if you can find the open switch." Morse directed when Giosso suggested he found a console. He did not have to even say it though, the com-tech was well on his way into the system.

"Everyone else, eyes up." Morse ordered. "Whether it was a trap'r or an accident, I want whatever walks up on us to know thems made a big fuckin' mistake. Go to infrared n' be ready if someone tries somethin' dumb."

It was not terribly dark inside of the hallway, but moving to infrared may give them an advantage if something tried to pop out and ambush them. Morse pulled his own infrared sensor down and put his hands back on his weapon facing the way they came in case they needed to go back to doing damage.

Samantha felt a flicker of fear and then rage when the the trap was sprung and she, Dmitri and Paulson were separated from the rest. She immediately had her pulse rifle at the ready and was spinning a slow circle to ensure nothing snuck up on them.

She heard Paulson’s comment and just shook her head. “Well Private, Dmitri’s married and no offense but you’re not my type, so unless you’re REALLY flexible, you’re outta luck mon”. She was about to give orders to look for the door controls while keeping an eye on the motion tracker, but they went ahead and did so on their own. She nodded her head in satisfaction, ‘good marines’ she thought to herself.

She answered Dmitris question with; “Nah, lets stay here for a bit and see if Mark can work his voo doo with de electronic doors. Just keep your eyes peeled, and watch dat tracker”; she finished as she flipped her IR eyepiece down and kept an alert watch in all directions...

Nodding at Perez' order, Sokolova responds back, "Copy that."

《Tag Perez》

Looking back to Quinn as they head off toward the androids, she makes a comment about the remains. "I guess they leave the mess for us. Question is... why do they make synthetic blood white and not red?"

《Tag Quinn》

Getting close to the bodies, she uses the front of her rifle to move around the remaind of inorganic shrapnel of what's left of the androids.
