Turn 4: Life Support (Marines)

Post by Corporal Hicks » Sat Apr 18, 2020 7:58 pm

The rifle kicked back against Henniger’s shoulder and the grenade rocketed down the line of trees. One of the terrorists was lining up a shot on Private Poole when the grenade exploded under his feet. His body was wrapped around the tree he was using for cover as it fell from the impact. The branches snagged on the other trees, but they tore themselves free and it struck the floor. The bloody mess at the base was all that remained of the hostile. (Grenade roll success.)

Morse ordered the charge and First Squad moved forward. Paulson sprayed and prayed with the pistol which landed two hits on another terrorist. As he dove down behind the log, he brought his flamethrower up. Nothing happened; the pouring water from the sprinklers had put out the pilot light. (Various rolls.)

The third and final terrorist was crouching behind a rock now, and he came up to fire on the charging Marines. PFC. Oliver Grisham took a hit in the collar bone, which snapped. The objectively ugly Grisham fell to the ground, howling in a scratchy, unpleasant voice. The last terrorist was outmaneuvered by Third Squad, however. Sergeant Major Sykes took the shot and peppered the hostile with machine-gun fire. The Marines cautiously advanced to ensure that all the remaining hostiles were disabled. As they did, there was another explosion. The last injured terrorist had blown himself up with a grenade rather than be captured. (Various rolls)

Quinn dove down beside the injured Sokolova and looked at the injured knee. The Russian Marine was lucky this time, the bullet had struck her shin-guard and ricocheted off her kneecap. There was blood and likely a chip off her kneecap, but it was a superficial wound. (Save roll critical success. Medical roll success)

Meanwhile, the leader of the Marines they had rescued gave his sitrep in an Irish brogue, “Sergeant Micky Duncan, USS Higgins, 1st Company, 2nd Platoon. We landed at de main dockin’ bay and tey ambushed us. We got pushed back all de way to here. Tey weren’t takin’ no damn prisoners. We’re wit you toe, we’ll fight till de last man. Tose bastards won’t get away wit tis.”

Sykes motioned to his squads. “The terrorists just hit life support. They are trying to disable it. Commander Zimmerman just ordered us to retake life support. Get your rebreathers in and move out! Quinn, leave Grisham, their medic can take care of it. Sergeant Duncan, I need a new squad leader. We will take anyone you can give us.”

The Marines moved out through the east door of hydroponics. They proceeded for five minutes down various corridors, ordering sheltering civilians to safety. Up ahead of them they saw a makeshift barricade with four men peering over the top. They wore riot police gear and carried shotguns and pulse rifles. The leader left the barricade and greeted them, he wore a large pair of reflective sunglasses and carried a VP-70 pistol. “Captain Vo, Gaia Station Police Department. Boy am I glad to see you!”

Henniger watched the hands of the civvies they brushed past in the corridors as they cleared their way to Life Support. He also let his eyes return occasionally the top of his jungle boot. There was a red smear where he'd purposefully dragged it through the pool that used to be the crew-served gunner he'd kerploded. Under his rebreather his lopsided grin was hidden but his eyes were full of dark humor. He'd killed in the course of duty before, but that was awesome. Close range 30 mike mike kill was tattoo worthy.

He shook his head and laughed quietly. A civvy women gave him a dirty look and flipped him the bird. He dropped her a wink.

The local law enforcement types let them by the barricade.

Paulson relight the pilot light as soon as they where out of the indoor rain, talk about bad luck, fortunately it hadn't got him or his squad killed.
they ran through various corridors Paulson tried his best to mentally mark the way back but had not bought flares to actually mark the route, he hoped he would not get lost returning to the ship.
As 1st squad came up to the barricades he scanned his motion detector so he could give a sit rep if anyone was in range.

Henniger stopped cold.

"Sarge the three hostile ahead KIA'd three cops. I see the bodies."

He stepped over to the right side of the corridor on their side of the police barricade.

"There is an access tunnel here right before the friendly barricade. The tunnel runs behind our side of Life Support."

Police Captain Vo continued to speak to the Marine Sergeants, “Those bastards wiped out most of my unit. It’s nothing like I’ve ever seen before. Our weapons don’t even get through their armor. This is all that we have left. They seem content to let us hold this barricade, but I’m sure there’s some of them in the hallway in case we try to attack. I sure hope you guys can get the job done! We will help you in any way we can!”

“Thank you, Captain,” replied Danny Sykes. Henniger pointed out the access tunnel. “Outstanding, good eye, Marine. It might be some use to us.”
<Tag Henniger>

Sykes turned to the police captain, “No friendlies out there, right?” The policeman shook his head. “Okay, First Squad, clear the hallway as soon as you’re ready. Take Private Poole and Lance Corporal Sokolova.”
<Tag Morse/Eyeball/Quinn/Henniger/Sokolova>

“Sergeant Hall, Corporal Barayev, I want you two to get down into the access tunnel. See if there’s another way into life support. Don’t engage without my orders unless they spot you.” The access tunnel appeared to be covered by a metal grating with an advanced lock on it. It was possible that a portable welder could get through it.

“Third Squad and the police are in reserve. Go ahead when you are ready, people.”

Paulson checked the range on his motion detector and nearly laughed out loud finally something within range. Squeezed into a doorway on the left was his intended target, the soldier was occasionally peeking out to view the police and barricades but made no attempt as yet to fire upon the marines.
Paulson made sure the pilot light was lit and no one was ahead of him using the barricade as cover from the other two soldiers and spayed what he hoped was flaming death at the unfortunate sole who had chosen to hide in a doorway. the flame spewed out and the backlash of heat could be felt by all vision was obscured by a orange and yellow bloom that raced across the gap, Paulson chuckled and the ducked back behind the barricade.

Samantha had been VERY happy to see that Tanya hadn't been seriously hurt by the shot to the knee, but she still sympathized as it was CLEARLY a painful wound.

Events quickly moved along and now she had been ordered to take Dmitri into some access tunnels. Loading a shell into her Shotgun to bring it back up to full capacity, she nodded at Sykes and said; "Aye-aye", and then turned to give Dmitri a 'follow me' head nod towards the access tunnel.

Talking in a low voice, she said; "Okay....I'll take point, you stay close behind....when dey start firing", referring to their fellow marines, "-we duck in low, so hopefully nobody sees us and we move quick, but QUIET...and see where dis ting takes us." With a nod at the supremely calm and trustworthy Marine, she crouched low and as soon as she heard Paulson's incinerator cut loose, she moved quickly, staying low, into the tunnel, shotgun up and leading the way....

Sykes heard the radio call from the Heimlich. It was Fernandez, that Navy guy who had been on his lifepod back on Capua. “Fernandez, this is Sykes. We are too far from you, you’ll just have to come back for us.” His quick and calm response belied the uneasiness he felt at the news. The Heimlich was assumedly receiving orders from Commander Zimmerman, but why the hell was it taking off?

He pushed down those thoughts and focussed on the combat immediately in front of him.

—————

Paulson’s flamethrower lit up the hallway. The black-armored enemy leaned back even further but the flames didn’t obey the rules of cover. The heat quickly overwhelmed his suit’s defenses and he came flailing out of his cover. Two of the cops started pumping shotgun rounds into him and he was thrown backwards with each shot. Another terrorist popped out and sent some lead downrange. Police Sergeant Marcy went down with a bullet in the head. Her cracked riot-shield face plate was splattered with blood.

Sergeant Hall welded through the floor plating with ease and dropped down into the dark access tunnel. It didn’t have much headroom. She could see about ten meters ahead using light from the opening above her.

The first skirmish was handled, but now more were to follow. Morse and the marines were ready, but at the current moment there was no good intelligence on the raw size of the force they were facing. Even if they kept overwhelming them in small groups, inevitably one of them would get a lucky shot on a marine and they would start losing steam. It was important that they pressed their advantage as quickly as possible, and so violence of action was the only real option presented. Sykes seemed to know this innately as well as he directed first squad to seize the hallway.

The enemy was called out via motion tracker, this was extremely helpful. While Paulson brought his flamethrower to engage the target on their left, Morse would prepare to destroy and enemy on the right. While he initially wanted to lob a grenade at him, Morse knew he was a better shot then he was with a lob.

"Drop em fast n' we move into the hallway n' prep for seizin' the life support door. We'll breach it and leave em' all dead'r near enough." Morse directed to the squad, preparing himself to move.

Morse took aim in the direction of where the adversary on the right was hiding, looking to get a shot. He fired three bursts in that direction at what he thought was the enemy, but was in that moment unsure of what he fired on.

If there was only one left he'd have them advance and see if they could take the final one prisoner.
