Turn 13: Something Wicked This Way Comes

Post by Corporal Hicks » Sat Jul 18, 2020 7:28 pm

The Marines jumped into action as the mercs launched their last-ditch assault on the bridge. The leading mercenary got a face full of M240 flamethrower courtesy of Paulson. The black paint melted off of his armor from the immense heat of the weapon, and he turned and ran, the flames trailing behind and engulfing him even after he escaped the direct line of fire. Henniger dropped another one with a pulse rifle burst that struck the man in the heart. (Gun rolls successful)

Smoke filled the hallway as Sergeant Hall threw the specialized grenade toward the enemy. She ran across to the civilians and tried to get them to move. The woman recoiled and tried to shield the child but as Hall explained the situation, she recognized the armor as friendly. Stray bullets flew down the hallway as Hall ran back toward the bridge with the civies in tow. They entered the bridge at a run and the woman and child joined the rest of the civilians that stood helplessly about the bridge. (Throw, dodge, and charisma rolls successful)

Henniger and Sokolova moved through a tight hallway on the right, attempting to flank the hostile forces. Up ahead, they saw one of the black-armored mercs firing toward something out of sight. Smoke was filling the hallway ahead. Then, they saw tracers flying past their heads as the merc turned toward them and sent a torrent of machine gun fire. Henniger felt a stinging pain in his right leg and suddenly found that he was laying sprawled out on the ground.

Sykes tried to focus on what the synthetic was saying to him. Knight’s programming prevented him from actively harming a human being. Danny Sykes’ programming had no such limitations, however. He heard the plan and nodded ascent. He turned to the bridge crew that was standing around helplessly. “Activate the bridge defenses, now! As long as it won’t put our people at risk.” The bridge crew was well trained, and they jumped into action, typing away on computers and view screens.

Sykes turned back to the firefight and quickly glanced at the motion tracker in Paulson’s hand. ‘Oh, shit,’ he thought, but managed to prevent the words coming out of his lips. “Morse, we need to fall back right now,” he said. He looked around, trying to spot some escape route from the shit storm that was coming for them.

Henniger forced his vision clear. He'd landed on his backside and forced himself to keep a half-sitting, half-lying posture. His right calf was on fire. He thumbed his selector lever to automatic and sent a flurry of rounds furiously towards the merc who had tagged him and fired at Sokolova.
"Fuck you," he grunted through clenched teeth.

<roll gun combat>

He spasmodically jerked the trigger of his pulse rifle and scooted himself back towards his fellow Marine. When he felt himself hit her shin armor, he dropped his carbine which hung across his torso armor by its sling.

"Skin pack!" Was all he could manage to communicate to his partner as he tore open a self sealing trauma pad. He kicked the quick release buckles of his shin guard with his opposite boot, he cried out as the armor piece slipped wetly to the deck plating. He almost passed out as he pulled the blood-saturated fatigue trouser leg out of its blousing at his boot. He actually heard a 'squirt' as he exposed his wound. He felt himself going into first-stage shock and frantically slapped the skin pack over the freely bleeding wound. The skin Pack's tails wrapped his whole calf which was necessary to staunch the exit wound. "Set!" He grunted and woozily brought his carbine up to try and help cover them.

((OOC: Apologies, everyone, for being MIA. Back in the saddle for the nonce, now. Bear with me while I backtrack a bit and get caught up .... ))

Image

Engineering was a hellhole, full of gunfire, flames, and the eerie nails-on-blackboard screams of the dying xenos. But at least they were dying screams and not screams of wounded rage. Much like a wounded bear, a wounded xeno had the potential to cause more harm than an unwounded one. Due to the dark smoke and strobe-light effect of muzzle flash, it was hard to see his targets at first, but Dmitri did his best. Once the engineering was put to rights, he was glad there were no casualties from friendly fire, just dead xenos from decidedly unfriendly fire.

Now, in the relative quiet and safety of the station's bridge, Dmitri leaned against a wall and watched as the upper rankers figured out what they'd do.

If you ask me, I say we evac off this bucket and set the reactors to nuke it to hell. It's the one sure way to kill the terrorists *and* the xenos in one fast move ... but no one's asking me.

Dmitri suppressed a snort and patted his breast pocket, wishing for a smoke. His fingers encountered the soft crinkle of not a packet of cigarettes but of Oksana's faked Dear John. Over the years it had become less a rebuke and more a talisman, a reminder of what he searched for--and now, who he fought for. He absently smoothed it flat and when the order was given to move out, he got into position behind Private Poole.

Who took one step forward before his head turned into red oatmeal, spattering liberally over Dmitri.

Shock turned off his brains, and training took over: Dmitri ducked left and got out of the line of fire, gave his head a sharp shake to fling off the gore, and spat his teammate off his lips. Up came his rifle and, with his ears ringing with Hall's orders, Dmitri lay down covering fire to protect his Sergeant.

Just another wonderful day in the Corps ... Sorry, Poole. That's a shitty way to go ... God be with you, brother.

Paulson nearly dropped the motion tracker as he saw the return signal. " twenty five plus contacts, signal strength clear and good, oh man we're in a world of pain!" the last bit kind of slipped out in an off mumble and squeak as he fried the first contact that came through the main doors.
taking up a firing position that offered Paulson some cover but still a good line of sight, Paulson braced himself to have a prolonged firefight.

"Boss, there seems to be a clear path down this corridor," Isabel called to Morse, Sykes, and Hall or whoever was listening. "Pretty sure we can evac here if needed" she yelled after double checking the corridor on the left to make sure there was no sign of the terrorists. She spent a little extra time looking in the dark spots for the creatures that seemed to move like shadows in closing daylight. "You, where does this lead?" she asked of a bridge crew member.

Isabel scanned the hallway listening to the battle the other marines were engaging in, but feeling committed to holding this hallway so that no one and nothing attempted to flank them from this position. She awaited an answer from the bridge crew member and hoped they would all be exiting this station soon.

The firefight was a bit more then they were able to handle. That was troublesome to Morse. While he was used to being somewhat outmatched by Xenomorphs of many varieties, he was not so accustomed to being pushed back by enemy forces that were humans anymore. And though his opinions had adjusted slightly over the years, he still harbored a distaste for Colonists, and Space Faring forces that were anything but loyal to the world that humanity was birthed from. To this end he was not beyond feeling a hurt pride when Sykes directed their immediate exit.

He was right, it was time to leave, and they'd need to cover an escape if there was one to be found. It appeared that the flanking maneuver had not worked... not entirely surprising... that most basic of tactics for thousands of years.

Morse heard the PVT Isabella Orozco call out about an exit. Morse did not know anything beyond the fact that their primary exit was blocked, and the flank to the right had failed. They either could hit left way out or hold their position, and their current position was no better then anything they could find themselves stuck in on the left.

"Marines! Fall back to Orozco's position on the left!" Morse yelled. "Orozco on point, find the way out! Sam get those civies movin' out now!"

< Tag Isabella and Sam

Morse shifted position, recognizing the calls of injury from his flanking force. They may have been down, but they were not so out that they could not send help. And Morse was going to do exactly that.

Morse looked to Paulson and raged over the sound of gunfire. "Paulson! Git' down that hall on the right n' drag our flankers out. Sounds they got square fucked n' I want em back here now, we're bout' to roll!"

<Tag Paulson

Morse looked over at Sykes. The old Marine would recognize just how screwed they were the same as Morse, but Morse was putting a rather visceral escape plan into action, and there was no real turning back. They were about to be overwhelmed and the damage done to the station would leave it beyond saving anyway.

Holding up his Pulse Rifle, Morse made eye contact with Sykes. "Sykes!" He cried. "Shit Dirk used to say!" Morse continued, and pumped the under barrel of the weapon, cocking a grenade into position. "Smoke 'em if ya got em'!"

Morse hoped that Sykes would understand that they needed to go real weapons free to hold them off. Though it would be the two highest ranked holding the position, he hoped that Sykes would follow suit and that they could do what they needed to in order to thave the minutes to escape.

Pointing his M41A down the hallway Morse began to unload grenades at the enemy position.

Paulson scrambled to the right and looked for the injured Henniger, finding him applying a flow slowing med pack to his shin, at the feet of Sokolova "WE ARE LEAVING STAGE LEFT " he called out before helping Henniger to his feet.
"anymore friendlies down there?" Paulson inquired, getting two negatives from his colleagues he sprayed the whole right side corridor with liquid flaming death before they ducked back into the main control room and started making their way across to the left side doors.

Henniger vaguely heard the comm chatter and when his squad mate, for the second time this op, helped him, he accepted gladly.

"Thanks," he gritted out as he threw an arm over Paulsons armored shoulders.
<tag Paulson + Sokolova>

He hadn't noticed whether his fusillade of automatic fire had hit the bastard who tagged him or not, but the Lance Corporal surely finished it with his flamer.

He used what rounds were left in his magazine to lay down light covering bursts. Holding his pulse rifle out behind him and blindly sending 2-3 round taps down range. His leg hurt like hell but that was a good thing he thought quickly. When it went numb you were in more trouble. The trio staggered down the corridor towards the rest of the platoon.
