Turn 17: The Hangar

Post by Corporal Hicks » Sun Aug 23, 2020 10:15 pm

The Marines and civilians on the elevator were lifted out one by one to stand on the elevator’s roof. The cause of the jam was apparent in the light of all the flashlights. The walls of the elevator shaft were warped and twisted from some stress or explosion. No doubt the terrorists had blown the elevator shaft when they moved this way to assault engineering. The Marines could only hope that the last of the terrorists had perished in the hull breach.

Paulson and Orozco used their rappelling lines to access the door to the third floor. The metal sliding doors did not want to open, but a breaching charge would convince them otherwise. The directed charge blew the doors off into the hallway with a deafening concussion in the tight space. One by one, the Marines and civilians climbed through the new entrance. Sykes and his top crew made their way down the ladder and joined the rest.

Sergeant Major Sykes pulled Sokolova aside, “Lance Corporal, I want you to hail Crazyhorse Actual. Acknowledge last transmission and request evac in ten minutes at the main hangar bay. Tell them a hot LZ is a possibility.” When the rookie ComTech had evacuated, Sykes had ordered Sokolova to take his long-range radio. This radio would be able to hail the dropship which was their only hope of rescue.
<Tag Sokolova>

The next ten minutes were nerve-wracking but relatively quiet. The Marines made their way through Communications. The floor was littered with bodies and every so often was a black mark from an explosion or a cluster of bullet holes. The terrorists had moved this way immediately after docking in an attempt to isolate Gaia Station. The sound of the heavy footsteps of the Marine spec-ops team was a testament to their failure.

Finally, they left Communications behind them. Up ahead was the main hangar. The Marines methodically cleared the entrance before entering the broad expanse of the hangar. The ceiling was five stories above their heads and the high walls were riddled with platforms, catwalks, and walkways. A few civilian ships were docked on these platforms. In the center of the hangar was a larger, military-looking ship. It was painted pitch black and had no markings of any kind. The ramp was down and the entrance was dark.

"Dizzy" tracked the Marines' ID tags as they extracted all survivors from the elevator and angled his sensors to 'ping' the surrounding structure ahead of the Devil Dawgs and the non combatants. Quiet nervous edged his mind and kept him focused as he fired manuevering thrusters to skim the Cheyenne dropship over the station's exterior and be in position to make an extraction from the hanger. He sensor pinged the hanger doors and the surrounding structure to 'take the temperature' of the serviceable machinary the Marines and civies needed to use to make their escape.

[Roll sensor scan on hanger doors and power systems]

Having mission critical information on hand for Sykes and his boys was his responsibility and "Dizzy" made full use of 'Crazyhorse' and her military-grade scanners while also priming it's weapons payload for close area fire support for a nightmare scenario to save as many Marines and survivors from and threat that showed up.

SGT Samantha 'Sam' Hall felt conflicting emotions....happy that she was out of the elevator shaft....but nervous that they were entering a dark and foreboding looking hangar. The whole place just silently screamed "AMBUSH!"

"Anybody wit trackers get 'dem going.....this CERTAINLY looks like a place where we could be gettin' ambushed. Look sharp", she said while keeping her Pulse Rifle at the ready and checking all over the big hangar for any signs of Xenomorphs, Mercs....anything.....

Paulson as usual had his motion tracker up and active sweeping the surrounding area, but the hanger was big and the motion detector had its limits so he scrutinized the results the best he could.
<roll motion tracker>
dark shadows lept out every time someone moved their torches the beams trying to pierce the darkness of the hanger the elevator shaft had been closed in and felt like a death trap this was almost oppressive in its quiet darkness like it was waiting for something to happen.
Paulson scanned, and slowly began to edge into the hanger and towards the dark ship parked within it, the sweep came back clear, so far so good.

Tanya nodded and gave an affirmation after hearing Sykes’ orders. “Yes Sir! I am right on it!” She replied in her thick Ukrainian accent.

Giving the go ahead with the word, she thought back to some of her training on how comms systems worked, remembering the basics of how to use them. Having been handed the long-range radio, she set up the channel to the proper wavelength before attaching on the gear to her armor. Testing the comms array, she opened the channel and responded. She tried to make her case in a way that would get the pilot’s attention immediately, “Crazyhorse, this is Devil Dawgs Actual. Do you read? We need to get evac into main hangar bay now! Hear me? There is high probability we have hot LZ on hands out here!”

Isabel was glad to be out of the elevator shaft, but the many angles and hiding spots offered up by the large hangar bay left a lot of angles to be accounted for. She watched the other marines and then picked up an area that didn't seem to have any coverage along the wall to the right.

"Picking up our right flank" Orozco called out to the other marines.

Henniger was quickly losing steam. He had rappelled down the shaft when the platoon commander collapsed rear security above which he'd been assigned to.
Now, in the cavernous hangar deck, his blood loss was clearly and literally draining his ability to ignore and drive on. He carried his pulse rifle at the high ready and squelched blood in his boot with every tentative step. His harness hung heavy over his mark iii armor. He'd removed his helmet and clipped it to his web belt to allow him to rest his neck a bit. He moved along with his platoon with teeth clenched. He was fatigued enough so the pain had receded and in its place was a vague fugue state. He searched the murky corners and overhead as best he could. He wouldn't let down his guard until they were safely aboard their own ship.

'Crazyhorse' actual acknowledge. Fire support on stand by Devil Dawgs for extraction. I am going to link the dropship's sensors to coordinate evacuation efforts. I will begin approach once the LZ is swept for hostiles and hanger doors are opened.

'Dizzy' flipped the sensor links and opened transmission lines to Skykes's platoon. He looked to his co-pilot, "Switching fire control over...reinforce FoF target screening."

The hanger was so large that the idea of calling it secure would be a lie, and everyone knew it. It was the largest structure he'd ever seen floating in space that was actually intended to be manned. Of course everyone had seen massive haulers pulling containers of ore and food stuffs from Gateway... but those were just giant air sealed pods. This bore the direct intent of having things enter and leave. Obviously it had intended to be a major trading hub for the planet below, but it seemed likely that those days for the station were done.

Morse scanned the massive room with his eyes as well. They had the sensors, they had the infrared, and they had the training. That had to be advantage enough, especially since they were right on the goal line of getting out of that miserable situation. It still was not enough though that they were almost safe, Morse wanted all of his marines and additional personnel off that station time now.

At that point though, Morse was sufficiently satisfied. And though it may be a risk, the dropship would reveal anything in the area that attempted to kill it. Its armor should be enough to brush off anything that was being used in the station... that was apparent as their enemy mercenaries didn't have any High Explosive's on them and seemed surprised that the marines had been willing to use them so readily. Matched with the chain guns on the Cheyenne they should be able to make a devastating exit if need be.

There was of course the threat of the Xenomorphs... but they did not fly so well, so as long as the marines got eyes on them before the dropship touched down that would be good.

"I'm ready to call it good n' git' us the fuck outa here." Morse announced to the group. "Syke's, I don't see shit. If we pull in the dropship it'll smoke anythin' that decides it wants to stop us."

Sergeant Major Sykes nodded to Morse as the Marines started to form a perimeter. He looked around for the most tech-savvy person to get the hangar door open. His eyes fell on the synthetic. “Knight, get the outer hangar door open. Second Squad, hold the perimeter and cover him. First Squad… We better clear that ship. If there’s anyone in there we don’t want them surprising us.” Reluctantly, Sykes began to walk up the ramp of the black-painted ship.

Paulson caught upto Sykes quickly and took point no use in having motion tracker if you didn't use it effectively.
<roll motion tracker>
slowly with his flamer ready Paulson began his approach to the ships entrance its dark colour and lack of markings where unnerving him, not to mention it appeared that whomever these people where they had deliberately used xeno's.
with the rest of first squad, and it would appear Sykes as well, Paulson entered the ship and began to clear its interior of anything hostile human or not.

Henniger approached the painted ship with what remained of First Squad.

"Hold." He said into his headset.

"Sarge I see small, things skittering around the landing struts. Definitely not cats."

Henniger had no idea what fresh hell these things were but he knew how to deal with them. He opened fire down a clear lane beside his squad mates.

Isabel noticed several small creatures moving about near the landing gear. After seeing Heninger open up on them, she followed suit aiming at one and track up in a quick burst. "Contact front at the ship" she called out to the rest of the squad.

"Motion tracker has three, i repeat three signals clear and strong range 20 meters" Paulson called out as his squad mates opened fire on the small skittering creatures.
<aim and fire short burst (flamer) if target presents>
"no other movement at this time", Paulson was relieved because the echo round the hanger from multiple pulse rifle shots was loud and confusing.
Paulson continued to aim waiting for the right time to pop one of these creatures but they where small and fast and he knew he was on limited fuel.
