Turn 3 New Arrivals - Squad 1,2 - Freight Terminal

Post by JuanPerez » Sun Oct 11, 2020 9:05 pm

<GAMEMASTER INFO: End Of Turn 18.10.2020>

<November 31, 2189, 21:00 p.m.

Polaris System, Planet Utica - Former Hiatt Corporation Mining-Complex
Mission Time 03:00, 21 grad celsius, slight-to-medium rain

On Approach To Freight Terminal>

The former freight terminal of the Hiatt Mining-Complex is a big and ugly cordon-like building and one of the two targets in this area to be searched and cleared out.
A "standard" freight terminal would consist of a ton of workers, human-like synthetic and robotics, doing on- and off-loading of cargo ships day in and day out.
In the contrary, this freight terminal is dead. No cargo loading, no movement, no sound, nothing. Just sporadic flickers of emergency lighting inside and on top of the building.
The marines of 1st and 2nd squad appoached the building carefully, using the cover of darkness and scattered debris, dumped cargo vehicles, etc.
Coming close to 70 meter both squads stoped.

There were three options to enter the freight terminal:
- three bigger doors, all shut
- smaller man-sized doors, all shut
- climbing the roof

Paulson already had his motion tracker in his hand and as he waited for further orders, he ran a sweep of the building ahead.
<roll motion detector -expert>
the light rain made visualizing the building slightly harder but infer red and motion sensors should still work perfectly , he flicked down his eye piece and scanned the building.

Sergeant Major Sykes' subdued voice came through the radio:

The rain was soaking straight through to Morse's skin. It wasn't like Earth rain, it felt cleaner, fewer particles and toxins in it raining down his face. At times rain on Earth felt like oil sliding down your forehead depending on the quality of the air that day, and that was a more common endeavor then one might immediately expect. Here the atmospheric processor made Morse feel as though he could easily stick his tongue out and drink it and not get sick.

But that was the allure of the colonies to and Earther. Morse knew that the resources there were made by Earth for Earth and there was no reason for him to take some now, when he could just wait for corporates to package it and sell it to him at an unfair mark up. That was the way of the galaxy, and protection of such investments always had a hand in why Marines were sent anywhere. Morse was no longer believing it was a 'secret war' scenario that they were the only ones standing between humanity and oblivion. If that was the case they'd mobilize a fleet and obliterate the threats right back. No it was clear to him they were just hopping from world to world to provide pinpoint precision and only lose a handful of Marines who were not involved and had no right to go public, then hiring mercenaries who cost more, international Soldiers who cost even more then that, and PR teams that had to explain away an interstellar war.

That worked on Alexandria... but even the war there felt more like a public relations stunt to Morse now then a moment of history that made a difference.

There were a few options ahead of them in this imminent attack, but Morse knew his preferred option. They hadn't done a climbing action for a while and it was raining, so getting to the roof could be dangerous from the outside. Plus if they were setting up HIMARs they could destabilize the roof and Morse did not want to up there if it shattered. There were smaller doors, to work their way through hallways. But Smartguns and their numbers wouldn't be great there, and they could get lost.

But Morse had Paulson, one of the greatest Com Techs he'd ever served with attached to them. And they had smartguns. Sniper support. Mortar Support. And they had eight Marines, which were more then a match for anyone they'd fight en masse.

Morse wanted to go through the big doors.

"1st n' 2nd." Morse addressed. "We're hittin' one a them big doors. We'll pop it open n' see what's inside. If anythin' in 'er shoots at us... we return the favor but better." Morse gave the general gist of the plan. "Paulson, git ready to get a door open. McMagnus keep that weapon ready for blastin'. Henniger, you watch the right while we advance. We keep Paulson covered till he's got the door open, n' form a firin' line." Morse gave the direct orders to his squad.

<Tag 1st Squad

While technically Sam fell under Morse, Morse respected the fact that she was a squad leader herself and did not want to override her judgement. "Sam, we may need coverin' fire. I suggest you n' squad 2 stay fifty meters behind n' cover. Watch the right, left, n' roof." Morse noted. "I may need you to come save my ass again, n' I'd rather yours be healthy if it comes to that."

<Tag Sam and 2nd Squad

Morse recognized there was a danger in what they were doing, but given they had set up a mortar they were not likely planning on keeping the operation silent for very long. And Morse had an easier time with shooting adversaries when he was on the offense then the defense... because defense usually involved more running.

With everyone in line, Morse directed 1st Squad forward to move on the door, tactically bounding in the rain with eyes wide open in the dark.

Henniger thought that he had overcome his fears. Now, sweat and rain-soaked and taking a knee to pull right security, his fear gnawed at his guts. His balls were in his throat. He wasn't afraid to die, just to fuck up. He watched as his fellow Marine hit the door.

Paulson nearly shat a brick at the outline of Morses’ plan. He hadn’t used a bypass kit since basic, he had specialised in motion tracking and special weapons in particular sentry turrets. He could field strip one of those and have it back up and running in no time but a door bypass was going to take longer.

(occ incredibly happy to roll play but don’t have a bypass kit going to pass to someone that does, if not and I’m doing it then roll something and hope for the best)

Henniger must have seen his concerns and came up beside him Paulson turned to him and quietly asked “you want to do this mate? its been a while for me”
<tag Henniger or anyone that has the skill, we would know right?>

Keeping one hand on his motion detector and checking it every few seconds Paulson provided close cover while Henniger did his magic.
(occ. hope that is not taking liberties)

As Paulson and Henniger moved too the door it rapidly became apparent that neither man would be able to open them, they had been welded shut.

The motion detector came back with 4 clear and two sporadic movements from inside the building, someone was taking care to mask their signal or were just not moving much, impossible to tell.

Paulson risked a quick glance through the small glass panel on the door it was very weathered and rough, offering only a poor view inside, but he was fairly certain he had seen the tell-tale beam of a sentry gun sweeping inside the building. “door is welded closed, going to need a cutter or a demo charge no way to do it quietly!” Paulson whispered to Morse over the comms “but I think there’s a sentry gun set up on the other side of the door! going to need a different way in is my opinion at this time,” He continued.

Henniger saw what Paulson saw. The door was welded shut, nothing short of a large demo charge would break it enough for the squads to make entry.

He hit the wall in the left side of the door and examined the seals. He'd seen civvy welds on Gaia Station and out on the Rim, but this was a professional, deliberate weld.

"Sarge, Paulson is right. We'll need a shape charge to bust half the door in. Or dual EFP charges pointed into both welds to bounce it out of socket. Either way, it'll be boom work and physical work."

No way through the big door. While unfortunate, it was not there only option. Morse had not anticipated walking into such a sophisticated trap. Generally they were dealing with some mounted positions or a squad in wait, but not something along the lines of welded doors and potential autoguns. But if the tracker was picking up and Paulson was reading it right there was no point in testing it. The autoguns would lock and fire on them even if they were behind cover... and much faster then they could hope to attempt to avoid.

Morse still was not entirely resigned to attempting to get on the roof. There were still doors, and while the roof may have been thought of in the trap... Morse would think of the roof in the trap... and he was suspicious that whoever was doing this may have thought that way as well. He'd only attempt it if they were completely out of options, but he did not want a whole squad, or even a single marine, exposed while a climb was attempted in the weather they were in. He'd seen the handy work of their own snipers, and especially an M56 Smartgun, the technology of which was not uncommon in their region of space.

"Check the entry points. By twos." Morse pointed to the man sized doors. "If it opens n' you spect somethin's on the other side... do a recon by fire. If not, hold fire n' keep your red eye on."

Morse was half inclined to roll a grenade through any door, but he suspected he may need them for more serious situations this drop.

Henniger began his door searches with his partner as an idea struck him. When the doors suck, make a wall a door. While he conducted his searches he began looking for likely looking walls to breach that would flank or pinch from behind the menace behind the large door.

Paulson provided close cover for Henniger as he checked doors, they headed off clock wise round the building, Paulson glanced up to see another two man team start to do the same but go anti clock wise they could meet on the far side and cover the exits faster that way.

Sam heard Morse's order and acknowledged it; "You got it Morse", she replied, then turned to her people, directed them to get some cover and set up a good position to provide covering fire for Morse's squad if needed. She did her best to focus on the roof and from any unexpected directions these mercs might utilize to ambush her people.

One part of her mind was very grateful and relieved that Morse had seemed to come a long way from the volatile, shoot-first, shoot-always, bordering on homicidal rage he had shown in a few of their long ago missions and was showing admirable judgement as a leader. She just hoped she could do the same....
