Turn 5 - Overwhelming Force, Squad 1,2

Post by Corporal Hicks » Sun Nov 01, 2020 9:13 pm

The Marines of First and Second Squad watched the battle precariously from behind their cover. The crates and old forklifts they sheltered behind were coated with a layer of rust, as if they had been sitting there for years without seeing use or proper maintenance.

Ahead of them, the battle raged. Bullets pinged off of the suits of the Wu-Gong operators while their opponents seemed to be dropping like flies. They continued to advance from right to left (from the Marines’ perspectives.) The defenders sheltered behind desks and crates that were being shredded by gunfire from the attacking “Centipedes.”

Sergeants Morse and Hall heard the voice of Lieutenant Daniela Harper in their earpieces. “Engage at will with the Wu-Gong suits. The other faction may be friendly, but assume they are not unless they surrender to you. Use all necessary force.”

Morse had been entirely content with waiting it out and dealing with whoever was left. But there was apparently some action happening on the roof, and the LT was opting for a more aggressive approach. While there was a moment of irony that Morse reflected on in that he did not want to charge in and their commanding officer did, he knew any of his reservations were entirely overruled by Harper. This did not bother him at all. Their pause had given him the time to think about their situation and analyze the skirmish line.

If Harper was right and these were friendlies across from them, then they had them surrounded. And if they were friendly, and it was a three way front, the Marines had the tactical advantage of the flank and sandwiching one of the opposing forces.

First thing was to deal with the suits. And there was no truly good way to do that. Just throw bullets and bullshit until they fell down.

"Marines!" Morse spoke over the radio to address second and first squad. "Open fire!"

Morse had pumped his M41A with a fragmentation grenade, and was more then ready and willing to use it. He took a supported position on a piece of equipment that he had been using for cover and concealment, took his aim for the lob, and unleashed his fury at the enemy.

Samantha sighed as she would've preferred to NOT jump into the middle of the current fire-fight, but orders were orders and she was a good Marine....

She clicked her comm over to her squad's channel; "Okay, Second, here's the plan....Doc, keep watching our flank, I don't want no'ting sneaking up on us while we're shooting deese fools. Funker, Dmitri, take careful aim and put a grenade on each of dose Centipedes....Funker de left one, Dmitri de right. Carlson, pick de left one and hose it down with your smartgun while I try and put a good shot into the one on de right. Everybody stay behind cover as much as you can. Light 'em up!"

With that, she knelt down behind some good cover, inhaled a deep breath, took careful aim at the least protected part of the Centipede 'suit' she could find, let go the breath and stroked the trigger to fire a single burst from her Pulse Rifle.....

Henniger sighted in on one of the WuGong Centipedes. He noticed something odd as the mercs on foot fell from the Centipede's fire. The bodies were taking very small impacts. No blood, no clothing or gear fragments. And they were all breathing as they lay in the alien worlds' dirt.

"Sarge." He said into his comm over the firing of his platoon.
"The mechs are firing stun and tranqs into the mercs. No live rounds on the foot mobiles."

<tag Morse>

He settled his grenade sight on the far left Centipede and squeezed the secondary trigger.

Paulson had noticed the same thing, non fatal shots seemed to be coming from the mechanized infantry, considering he was about to come out of cover he hoped that that would not change.
seeing the fire power descending on the two standing mech troops Paulson opted to go with his original plan and put a granade round inside the damaged APC he could see more infantry in there and although currently not moving they could ill afford to have more added to the conflict, risking a quick glance at his motion sensor which revealed only the known combatants he lined up his shot into the open door of the APC with a grenade.

Dwight was just considering to himself if it was wise to wait and not engage from their flank when the order came through to open fire. He felt that their best chance against these suited guys was to catch them off guard and he was glad the brass above didn't let the opportunity get away from them. Still, without a better understanding of these suits this could go badly, but hitting them with absolutely everything all at once will surely be enough!

Sgt Hall : "Carlson, pick de left one and hose it down with your Smartgun while I try and put a good shot into the one on de right."

"Roger that Sergeant! Funker, Dmitri, hold on tight I'm firing right between you!" Dwight replied on the comm

Dwight shifted his position slightly to the right and placed his weight on his front foot. The left suited unit was clear in view and surrounded by the targeting reticle in his optics. The backpack and the shoulder mounts appeared to be the best targets where the most damage could be done.
He pulled slightly harder on the rear trigger as he adjusted the Smartgun's aim slightly towards the upper half of the suit. The Smartgun locked onto the new target angle.

No matter how many times Dwight used his weapon, it always filled him with a feeling of absolute power. "here we go!" he thought to himself as he pulled the trigger further.

Dmitri clicked his comms twice to signal Hall he'd understood her orders and got to work: he took careful aim on the target assigned him, exhaled, and squeezed the trigger. Short controlled shots. For an armored target like this, he wanted every bullet to count: weak points like joints in the exosuit, helmet visor, even the articulated points of the built-in weapons ... Dmitri did his best to ruin Right-Hand Centipede's day.

The Admin Center on the APC was not much more than a widening of the compartment between the staging area and the driver's seat, but Oksana wasn't going to quibble over nomenclature. She just wanted everything tp work properly. Multiple screens showed the live streams from the helmet cams and the comms chatter rattled in her headset, so … yup, everything worked.

Good.

Lt. Harper sat beside her, observing the Marines on the ground and coordinating their actions. As a military advisor, Oksana was present to offer help as needed. She rolled her chair closer to the console and squinted at the screens, hoping to catch anything the others might miss, matters that her training as a doctor and a scientist might prove valuable and timely. There was also her involuntary experience, seven years of it, as a "guest worker" of JTL that might also come into play.

She sat and watched and remained silent. She didn't want to add any stray chatter that might get picked up by the comms and confuse the troops on the ground. She did her best not to get in Lt. Harper's way.

However, when the action got hot with the arrival of the Centipede soldiers, Oksana leaned forward and stared hard at the screens. Something looked odd but it took a moment for her to figure out what it was. When Henninger's statement came over the feeds, Oksana started going through everything in her head about the possible drugs used and their dosages.

She wasn't a soldier. She was a scientist. But even so, for one searing moment of regret, she wished she was a Marine, if only to drag one of the felled Chinese to examine the cause and effect of those mystery rounds.

Doc, keep watching our flank, I don't want no'ting sneaking up on us while we're shooting deese fools

Kelly tapped the transmit key of his mic twice to signal message received and kept facing the retreating Chinese as the warehouse behind him lit up with his squads combined firepower. With his back planted firmly against the battered shipping container he reckoned he should be relatively safe from any return fire from the Exo-suits. Kelly sighted on what he thought was the squad leader with his M41-A and kept his finger on the trigger. The Chinese looked to have their hands full with the Centipede's but if the squad leader made any aggressive move in 2nd squad's direction he wouldn't live to regret it.

First and Second Squad opened up on the "Centipedes" in style and completely took them by surprise.

Sergeant Morse fired a grenade at "Centipede #1" and hit it squarely. As he did not see the attack coming, he had not a chance to evade it or jump into cover. The grenade did exactly what it was designed for: * WHOOM *, knocking "Pede #1 backward and clearly irritating him.
Skill Roll Result: 2 Successes

Sergeant Hall concentrated herself on the shot, aimed carefully and squeezed the trigger. The armor-piercing bullets hit the head of "Centipede #2", doing damage.
Skill Roll Result: 3 Successes

Henninger fired a grenade into "Pede #2" and hit it. Shortly after the typical *WHOOM* of an exploding grenade a much louder *WWWHHHOOOMMM" was followed by an explosion, indicating, that he must have hit something vital. It will be next to impossible to determine what, because "Pede #2" was shredded to small pieces by the explosion.
Skill Roll Result: 2 Critical Successes

Paulson aimed and fired into the Centipede's APC. The sound of a grenade explosion was heard, and after that several explosions were set off inside the APC. Black smoke came out of the open front hatch.
Skill Roll Result: 2 Successes

Carlson took advantage of "Pede #1"'s struggle for balance and fired burst after burst at the monster. The smartgun's infrared tracking system had no difficulty picking it up. The sound was deafening. Pede #1 was hit multiple times on different locations and was knocked off his feet, falling to the ground.
Skill Roll Result: 3 Successes

Dimtri Barayev aimed at "Pede # 2", but a frag exploded before he could pull the trigger, the Centipede exploding into a bloody mess, there was no point in firing more bullets, so he did not take the shot.

Doc Kelly watched the other faction carefully, but he could not detect any hostile movements or behavior towards his fellow marines. He just saw surprised faces and mimiks.

(Please describe your characters' actions after the fire-fight. The other Chinese fraction surrenders immediately to you, throwing their weapons away and raising their hands. At least the half of them, who are able to do something, the other half being downed by the Centipedes before your action kicked in)

The coordinated attack by the marines caught the suited combatants completely by surprise, without having time to turn or defend the impacts were devastating.

Just before Dwight began firing Sgt Morse scored a direct hit with an underslung grenade on the same target. The tightly packed explosion engulfed the upper half of the target with smoke and flame. The shockwave lifted dust from the floor and brought rust flakes and debris down from the roof. For a moment the Centipede and its pilot disappeared completely from view behind dust, smoke and debris however through his eyepiece Dwight could see the Infrared silhouette overlayed onto the smoke, stumbling from the impact but remaining upright.

His Smartgun roared into action, its signature muzzle flash creating extreme flashes of light and stark dancing shadows on the surfaces around him. The first burst struck the Centipede square in the upper chest at center mass causing it to twist and begin to topple but it was quickly followed by another burst right in the torso. The Centipede actually lifted off the ground slightly from the barrage twisting in the air as the final burst tore into its torso and back. The suit and its pilot crashed to the floor motionless with smoke and sparks rising from the crumpled mess. Dwight released the pressure from the rear trigger and returned to a ready stance.

His target did not move at all and after a moment he glanced around and saw the other Centipede had actually exploded! The APC was toast and the other forces were throwing down their guns as a sign of non-aggression. Dwight relaxed slightly but kept his Smartgun focused in the direction of the fallen Centipede and soldiers on the far side behind it.

As the sound of gunfire died away, Kelly rose to his feet from behind the packing case and approached the remaining Chinese infantry, sticking to a covering position on Henniger's left. He kept his Pulse Rifle up and trained on the cluster of surrendering troopers as they stood in a little huddle in the middle of the warehouse floor.

As he approached, Kelly pulled a set of flexi-cuffs from his webbing and called out: Zài xīgài shàng, shuāng shǒu fàng zài tóu hòumiàn. He prayed that he was correctly remembering the USCMC Operational Chinese Phraseguide he had studied before the drop. With luck he was instructing them to put their hands on their heads and get on their knees and not insulting their mothers but there was no way to be certain.
