Turn 8: The Approach

Post by Corporal Hicks » Wed Dec 02, 2020 3:02 am

So far, the mission had gone fairly well. It seemed that the Marines had conveniently landed at a time when the two factions were already fighting each other. The distraction gave them plenty of cover and weakened their opponents. The spaceport had fallen to the Devil Dawgs and now they proceeded northward to investigate the rest of the complex. Their objective was to clear out the hostiles and investigate the rumors of a “black goo” substance that was being used on test subjects.

The child, Mira, had told the Marines of a secret entrance to the lab, accessed underneath a red crate in the storage building. The rain had stopped, and the sun was beginning to rise. The grassy terrain was pockmarked with muddy puddles. Up ahead were several buildings in a sort of complex. The storage building stood on the right, but no movement could be seen ahead. The chirping of birds was present in their ears, giving the scene an impression of safety, but the Marines knew that the increased light only exposed them to hostile eyes.

The Marines had reformed into three squads, leaving some behind to watch the prisoners and to defend the spaceport. Now they moved together, with Second Squad taking point, First Squad off to the left, and Third Squad on the right. Their boots squelched slightly as they plodded along the muddy ground.

Suddenly, they saw movement ahead. A figure came running out of the shade of a small clump of pine trees. It was still too dark to see well, but the outlines of several figures running in their general direction became visible. “Get down,” ordered Sykes immediately through the comms. The leading figure ahead was small, probably a child. Behind him ran two larger figures, shouting something in a foreign language.

Henniger had been trudging along in formation with First Squad. His eyes moved over every bit of terrain and vegetation as they moved as silently as possible for highly trained infantrymen. He was near the far left flank in his squad column when Sykes hissed over the com.
He got down to a knee and faced outboard watching the left flank while turning his helmeted head sporadically to check the Marines to his right and rear. His helmet chin strap jingled metalically against his torso armor's shoulder plate when he did so. He eased himself into a comfortable prone position favoring his left side to keep his shoulder lamp off the deck.

There advance was in disturbed and tactical. Morse and first squad were on the left. No position was Morse's preference. He knew that point was where he'd been hurt the most over the years, but most often it was entirely random chance and circumstances that could get someone hurt. They were more cautious in these days then they had been in the passed when Morse had lost his leg, but that did not mean the danger was not there. Morse moved slowly with first squad, ready for what would come.

The movement in the breaking light and the call to drop put Morse, and the entire section into a prone position. Morse shifted up towards a rock to stabilize his firing position. He could not get the best view of what was happening up ahead, but there was something moving before them.

Morse held his fist up for first squad to hold their fire and position until they were given orders, and Morse did not say a word. Sound could give away their position, and unless they presented an imminent danger he did not want to immediately give away their position... especially not when they had an active officer on the ground that would tear him down over actions that endangered the mission and the unit (typically that was the order of concern).

Morse waited, weapon ready, safety off and would lay fire if needed.

Davros hit the ground in an instant. He watched the scene unfold as he click the safety off of his submachine gun. They would probably be out of his range to get an accurate shot on anyone but he still would be at the ready, you never know how these things unfold. "Anyone know what they are shouting, would hate to shoot at someone yelling run and trying to help." <tag anyone> The more he watched the scene unfold the more it brought his blood to boil, you don't do shit to kids. Gritting his teeth he reminded himself to wait for orders. He readied himself to run in case he needed to go help the kid. He hoped that if he did run for it he would get sufficient cover fire, and not have any holes punched in him from the backside. He glance at the marines around him and reminded himself how important it is to trust the marine next to him.

Henniger saw the two chasing the girl were black armored mercs.

"Sarge" he commed Morse. "The two chasing the kid are wearing the same black armor as an Gaia Station."

<tag Morse>

Henniger aimed down the rails of his pulse rifle at the merc on the left and squeezed the trigger.

Paulson pulled out his motion detector as the first shot fired from right next to him, the same target he had been aiming at started to receive incoming fire, Paulson just wanted to be sure it was just these two black armoured men and the apparent child in this area.

The bursts of fire from PFC. Henniger lit the night and punctuated the silence with their loud thunder. The left hand target tumbled to the ground and the other two figures froze in their tracks. It was clear now to the Marines in front that the leading target was indeed a child. "Jake!" almost screamed the child who was standing behind Lieutenant Harper in the safety of the APC. She didn't have a microphone but they heard her through the Lieutenant's mouthpiece. "That's my brother! Help him!"

The rear figure stood up straight and raised his hands in the air above his head. They could see his gun drop to the ground in the faint morning light.

Paulson reported what the motion detector had picked up," three contacts only otherwise scan is clear" the left figure dropped to the ground dead or injured, but not moving "now two"

Henniger shifted his front sight post to the figure on the right after the merc on the left crumpled. He'd seen bits of armor dust out as he stitched fire up the torso and then the red mist as two of his rounds entered the eye orbit. Guy was down.
He didn't bother checking his ammo readout, he'd spent nine rounds, with one flying on after the target dropped.

"One down Sarge."

Morse was a bit conflicted. On the one hand he saw something that looked like the target, but on the other hand he was absolutely not sure what he was looking at. It was difficult to discern at that moment, all he knew was that they were wearing dark uniforms. They appeared similar to those that had been on the station but it was impossible for him to make it out. That uncertainty made him hesitate.

It did not prompt such hesitation in PVT Henniger however. Morse heard him call out, and without a second thought the private fired.

Morse was immediately torn. He had lived enough and gone on enough missions to have the maturity to know that this was not exactly the right call. Someone could get hurt if you engaged an ambush without all the facts, and what was worse you could have casualties you did not intend. All of his recent training was telling him that to tell Henniger to hold fire and get down.

But there was the inner Morse that still lingered on. Maybe brought back to the light amidst his recent drinking. Maybe it was the parallels between the situation Henniger thrust them in and Morse's own brash youth with Sgt Dirk Pitt... where ever he was.

Morse could reprimand him, or he could try to defend him in the case of something going wrong.

But that's not what Dirk would have done. Dirk trusted Morse, even amidst his darkest deeds, Dirk trusted Morse. From when he was a PVT to the last time he saw him. And if Morse fired... Dirk would fire.

And even if it was a bad call... Morse had made a career of daring the Corps to find someone better to do his job.

"Shred em'!" Morse echoed the phrase that was written on his smartgun back in his days as a gunner.

He took his aim and fired three burst at the standing target.

Henniger couldn't see his Squad Leader from over the sights of his pulse rifle, but the pause in his response was palpable. Momentarily he wondered if he'd made the right call. But overwhelmingly his memories of the treacherous capabilities of the mercs on Gaia Station flooded any doubt before it could take root. He squinted down the rails and let the front sight post blur and meld with the upper chest of the black-armored merc.

"Roger that."
