Turn 8: 2nd/3rd Squads

Post by Corporal Hicks » Sun Apr 11, 2021 4:07 pm

Doc melted through the locks and slid the broken door open. They all felt and heard a faint humming as they entered the room. Three long metal cylinders seemed to be the source of this energy. The squads fanned out to look for any more threats, but it seemed safe for now. Each of the cylinders was stenciled with bright yellow letters “WARNING FUSION REACTOR DO NOT TOUCH.” Behind the reactors was some kind of mechanical system marked “HYDROLIC FLUID RECYCLING SYSTEM.” At the far end of the room stood three engines which were probably not working with 50 atmospheres of water forced into their intricate designs. On the read left of the room stood two large gray storage tanks with letters reading “HYDROLIC FLUID STORAGE.” Near the base of one was a terminal that was blinking red. Lining the walls were four doors which apparently led to escape pod rooms.

“Spread out, see if you can figure anything out. Don’t break anything. We don’t want to disrupt the fusion reactors for God’s sake.” Sykes tried to wipe his brow but growled in frustration as his hand bumped against his glass faceplate.

Dwight Carlson was panting and starting to hyperventilate. He wanted a cigarette and he wanted out of this coffin. He couldn't stand the feeling of being trapped in a metal box that was the shape of his body. "I can't... I can't..." he panted to himself, whimpering in distress. He pulled the lock mechanism and took his helmet off, immediately gasping and inhaling the stale air of the engine room. He fell to his hands and knees at the back of the group and closed his eyes as the oxygen in his lungs returned to normal levels. He did not smoke a cigarette because he had left them on the submarine, he remembered that now.

Samantha took a deep breath inside the helmet to her suit, closed her eyes for a moment and imagined the nice sea breeze along the beaches of her home colony of New Kingston.....then she returned to the here and now....

Seeing Dwight having issues, she patted him on the back and said, "Take a deep breath mon....it'll be okay." Then nodding to Sykes, she spread out to the far right, keeping her Pulse Rifle at the ready and her senses on full alert.....

Henniger stepped past Kelly as the hyperthermal edges of the steel fell to the deck. He entered the room and sidestepped to his left, eyes and pulse rifle barrel scanning the chamber.

"Good work Doc." He said into his squad net.

He watched Dwight freeze up and Sgt. Hall checking on him. He had medical expertise aplenty in his squad. He moved to Dwight and placed a gloved hand on his shoulder, gently but forcefully turning him. He made eye contact through his faceplate and let his pulse rifle drop to his side.

"Dwight. You're going to be okay, pull it together Marine. We'll get through this Op together, dig deep and get back to the here and now."

He looked over to the doc.

"Kelly check Dwight out, he's having issues."

He let go of his Marine and turned to his smart gunner.

"Williams, let's check out those pods."

The two heavily suited Marines moved forward to the far bulkhead.

Henniger paused and turned to Kelly and Dwight. He took a sealed container from a leg cargo pocket sewn into the carapace of his suit.

He tossed the small, metal container to the medic.

"Give him one, they're prescription."

Kelly caught the container dexterously and turned it over in his hands. MARLBORO TIGHT BOX was stenciled into it.

"Kelly check Dwight out, he's having issues."

Darren hustled over to where Carlson was crouching on the floor with Sgt Hall and looked him over. The smartgunner was clearly in a bad way. His face was pale and sweat slick and his breathing was ragged, on the edge of hyperventilation. Darren helped him into a sitting position with his back against a stanchion, looked him in the eye and spoke to him in a loud, clear voice:

"Private you are having a panic attack. I know it feels like you cannot breathe but, trust me, you can. I want you to ignore everything around you and look at me. Try to take slow even breathes and answer these questions as clearly as possible
Can you tell me your name, rank and serial number?
Can you tell me where you are right now?
Can you describe the ribbon of the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal?"

Darren was all business, reeling off the questions clearly and crisply. There wasn't time for bed-side manner in a combat zone. The questions were intended to get the patients brain working on something other than the source of the panic attack and snap it out of fight or flight mode. It wasn't the kindest way snap someone out of a panic attack but it was effective. The only other alternative was drugs and everything in the Med-kit Darren was carrying was for battlefield trauma and would leave Carlson to loopy to fight.

As Henniger and his rifleman headed for the far bulkhead and the escape pods, he eyed the fusion reactors warily. He paused to lay a glove on one of them and felt the telltale thrum of active energy exchange.

"Hold up a sec." He told his Marine. "Third, Second, Command, watch your fire in here. These fusion reactors are active."

He burned the fact that he couldn't engage to his rear into his mind and continued forward to check the pods.
