Nehalennia and the Mac tires

Post by Medic Guy » Sat Feb 06, 2021 2:51 am

This is the larger submarine that the devil dogs will be assigned to Celtic phrasing for Nehalennia is she of the sea. The mini subs that she carries are called mac tires which means wolves. Standby for photographs and layout.

The Nehalennia is approximately 60 feet wide and 330 feet in length with 8 quad turrets that can be stowed inside the hull and deployed for combat. Four of the quad turrets are mounted at the bow, with 2 mounted on the dorsal or top side of the ship, and 2 mounted on the keel or bottom side. The ship is capable of carrying a crew of approximately 40 personnel commanded by the Captain and Executive officer, but may be able to carry additional personnel if racks are rotated between personnel.

The Mac tire (pronounced mock cheera) is approximately 4 feet wide and 17 feet in length. The mini sub is capable of docking with other vessels underwater for rescue or assault missions. The crew section of the vessel is approximately 3 feet wide by 12 feet in length with the docking hatch for rescue and assault breaching on the bottom of the sub. The crew enters the sub through a hatch on the top near the bow. The Nehelannia currently has six of these mini subs on board in the mini sub pen.

Apologies if my submarine terminology is off, tried to look up general nautical information.

For reference in case I am off here:
Port (left side)
Starboard (right side)
Bow (front)
Stern (back)
Dorsal (top)
I don't think that Keel is quite right for bottom, so someone fill me in on the appropriate vocab is.

Interior pictures and the layout of the large sub will be coming up.

Hopefully everything mostly makes sense, if there are views of anything that you'd like better or clearer let me know and I'll grab a screen shot of it. I don't have anything for the interior of the mini subs, they were just too small, but think of something along these lines without the glass bubble
Image

As for the design of this whole thing, it was made using sketch up. I did not make the mini subs or turrets, only recolored and scaled them to an appropriate size. I also did not make anything in the engine room, dive tanks, kitchen, toilets, or sinks.

I’m a Navy brat, and while my Dad served on carriers, not subs, I can help with some Navy talk questions. 😀

The keel is the central beam of the bottom of a ship, in many ways the ‘spine’ of the ship. Hull is another word for the Body of the ship and Under hull or undersides is sometimes used as well.

Amidships is the middle of the ship, galley is the kitchen, there are no walls, they are bulkheads, no stairs they are ladders, no floors they are decks, etc. etc

The commanding officer is always called the “Captain” regardless of actual rank....what else can I tell you? 😀

The keel of a ship is the ridge of metal that runs the length of the underside in the center. Internally it functions as the vessels spine, with the hull ribs attaching to it at intervals along the length of the ship. Externally it stabilizes the ship against roll caused by heavy seas. As most submarines of this size lack a keel, I think the word you are looking for as an opposite to Dorsal is Ventral.
