Turn 2: The Briefing

Post by wargamerGM » Mon Sep 06, 2021 5:48 pm

Date: February 13th, 2190
Time: 0830 hours (Local Time)
Location: Briefing Room, USCMC Starfort "Nebraska", Ariarcus Mining Colony, Kruger 90 System

The marines shuffled into the briefing room and picked out places in the front rows. The term Room seemed insufficient to describe such a huge space. Tiered banks of seating, reaching right up to the high-domed ceiling, lined three sides of the auditorium whilst the fourth was dominated by a huge back-projected screen. In the well of the auditorium stood a small cluster of uniformed figures, amongst them the Master Gunnery Sergeant who had woken the Devil Dawgs from Cryo-sleep.

Once everyone was seated, a tall man in the uniform of a colonel stepped up to the podium and addressed the assembled platoon.

"Good morning Marines. I am Lt Col Hanrahan, Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, 30th Marine Infantry Regiment. My Battalion forms the primary operational strength of Task Force Tacoma, along with attached Armour, Artillery and Reconnaissance strengths. Tacoma has been tasked with securing Systems Kruger 90 and Cygni 61 against aggressive action by military forces of the UPP and The Devil Dawgs will be providing that Reconnaissance strength."

The colonel gestured to his right at the little cluster of other uniformed figures standing in the well of the auditorium and The Master Guns and another man, wearing the insignia of a Major, stepped forwards.

"This is Major Griffin and Master Gunnery Sergeant Abrams, whom I believe you've all already met. They are the CO and Senior Non-Com in charge of Combat Logistics in the 30th. Long story short, they make sure we get where we need to be quickly and with everything we will need when get there to win the fight. They are also in charge of the disposition of all the forces attached to the Task Force for the duration of our deployment which means the Devil Dawgs fall under them in the chain of command. Major Griffin will see to your general disposition and you will fall under my strategic command when in the field."

The man identified as Major Griffin stepped forwards and took over the podium from Lt Col. Hanrahan.

"Task Force Tacoma will be using Kruger 90 as a staging area from which to embark aboard elements of the 5th Space Fleet for transit to Cygni 61. The Devil Dawgs have a separate initial tasking. The local garrison, under the command of Major Meyers here, has received an official request for aid from the Weyland Yutani research complex here on Ariarcus"

As he mentioned the name, the Major gestured to the last of figures in the well, this one a young woman in the uniform of USCMC Major.

"Unfortunately, neither the local garrison troops, nor the line forces of the 30th have sufficient security clearance to fulfill this tasking. Luckily, the Devil Dawgs do. Whilst the rest of the task force makes ship for Cygni 61 and forms an initial bridgehead, your unit will work with the local garrison to facilitate the evacuation of the WY facility and its staff and ensure the continued security of Fort Nebraska and the population which it protects. Once that task is complete you will embark aboard USS John Glenn and transit to Cygni 61 to join up with the rest of Tacoma for ongoing combat operations against the UPP."

"Questions?"

Davros raised his hand to ask a question. " Sir <ooc not sure how to properly address someone of the high rank myself but Davros would so can we pretend I did it right> do we have specs of what the facility looks like? I know it has high clearance but it would be helpful if we were able to have a proper plan for the area."

Paulson sat through the blessedly brief talk and took in most of what was said, alarm bells sounded as the lack of clearance of other troops was mentioned.
that had happened before and not ended well for several people.
he mentally noted to change his load out back to incinerator, although a good shot with a pulse rifle the comfort of liquid flaming death was calling to him again.

Finally back to reattached to a larger operations unit, Morse felt more comfortable with their situation. For years they'd been operating as a sort of "special forces" unit. While initially excited about such a proposition, and even advocating for it, he had become embittered with the mission set that had developed. They were often alone and unafraid, but being on the special operations side had left him feeling unusually alone and afraid in many of the missions that they'd gone through. Maybe the pressure had gotten to him and caused his breakdown. Not knowing why they were where they were or if there was anyone that was going to help them had done a number on his psyche, and he could only guess if that same mentality had sunk in with the others of Delta Dawgs... if they had even thought on it at all.

Operating with a larger unit would be a grand change of pace however. Seeing the mission of the greater unit would help put in context the work that they would be doing on the ground. Morse would recognize the impact, and that might help keep him a bit more level headed going forward.

"Staff Sergeant Morse, sir." Morse identified himself appropriately and stood up. His eyes were dark and sunken and skin pale... Morse was not what he used to be. "Them local garrisons'r regulars or they merc contractors?"

<Tag Command team

Morse wanted to know exactly who their aid was. If they were soldiers, they'd be reliable. If they were local guard authorities, they'd be iffy. But if they were corporate contracted mercenaries... they'd stand up just as far as their paycheck went... and that dollar value would be impossible to rely on.

Like Morse, Sykes was pleased to be operating in tandem with other units again. He tried to let this enthusiasm overwhelm his pessimistic and embittered attitude of the last few days.
Samantha called out; "Sergeant Hall here.....who're the UPP?"
Sykes answered Hall's question before the Lieutenant Colonel. "Commie bastards." He used the pejorative term broadly as the Union of Progressive Peoples was actually socialist, but Sykes did not bother to discriminate.

Danny rose to his feet. "Sergeant Major Sykes. Are we expecting any hostile contact at the Wey-Yu facility? How many staff are we evacuating? What is the nature of the research complex? Thank you, Sir."

Major Griffin listened to the questions from the marines and took them each in turn, First he addressed Davros.

"Relevant details of the facility will me made available to you by the administrator when you get on-site. I'm sure that will include some kind of floor plans."

Next he turned to Morse.

"The local garrison are USCMC regulars, Sergeant. However, they are not a line infantry unit. They're specializations are mostly technical, mechanics, cooks, comm-techs and similar. They are here to man the fort, not to fight a ground war or conduct a crowd control operation in advance of one, which is what they are finding themselves tasked with now. Your tasking here will be two-fold. You are to provide the W-Y contingent with whatever assistance they need to evacuate their operation safely from this facility and you will be on-hand to assist the local garrison with whatever crowd control operations become necessary when the news of the nearby conflict becomes public knowledge for the local population."

Finally he addressed Sgt Sykes.

"Commie Bastard's indeed Sergeant Major. The Union of Progressive Peoples is a quaint euphemism for all most authoritarian bits of old earth banded together into one big super-state. To answer your question, Sergeant. We don't know yet. All we have is a 'Request for aid'. They may require a full combat team to sweep and clear the facility or they might want someone to lift some heavy boxes for them. We don't know. You'll find out when you meet the Facility Administrator, Mallory Eckford"

Henniger had run into the UPP before on his first hitch. They controlled fringes of the rim and deep space planets. Old school renegades that fragmented and split off during the Early Colonial Period. In his experience they either blew themselves up with bargain basement nukes before he got close in to provide 10mm caseless diplomacy to them, or they fought with reckless abandon. Rumors abounded of combat drugs they took before imminent contact with their enemies.

He'd also not like to combine the UPP's involvement with Wey-Yu's insistently stupid experiments with Xenomorphs. Talk about letting an abhorrent fox into the hen house.

Henniger heard the bit about crowd control and glanced reflexively at Morse. He never set out to grease civvies but shit happened downrange. This operation would be under a much larger microscope however. If a civvy got in their way and got gone, he hoped they could mitigate the situation so as not to survive another operation just to face desk jockey justice. He lit a smoke and returned his attention to the officers on the stage.

Samantha took in the information and did her best to make a mental catalog of it for possible use later. To her, she found it ironic that her fellow Marines were making disparaging remarks about 'commies' when they were basically frequently doing the dirty work of a bunch of authoritarian rich Corporation CEOs....but she kept that to herself as in the end, the only thing that mattered were the men and women who fought beside you.

She frowned hard at the idea of 'crowd control' though....that NEVER was pleasant, but the Corps didn't ask what you liked, you just got sent where you were needed....

Taking in the notes that were given about the situation, Sokolova only nods her head, while thinking a bit more about Weyland Yutani being the main cause of a lot of the problems they'd be facing. In her mind, at least this mission wouldn't quite be the same as the last iteration they ran into when they crash landed on that planet.
