Turn 5: Gear Up!

Post by wargamerGM » Fri Nov 05, 2021 4:24 pm

The APACs crunched to a halt outside the armored shutters of the marine barracks loading dock just as they began to grind open. Four marines double-timed it out of the bay, bearing between them a pair of battered green supply crates stenciled with USCMC markings an serial numbers. They placed the crates on the ground by APAC one and stood back to salute Lt Harper. The lead corporal spoke up.

"Compliments of Major Meyers, Lieutenant. and she said to wish you Good Luck and Good Hunting!"

The party of marines turned and double timed it back through the, now closing, bay doors which clanged shut behind them.

When opened, the first crate contained Shock Mauls; compact, brutal weapons each one 2 feet of carbon composite with a steel reinforced striking head. Properly wielded, each one could easily break bones even without the 100Kw power supply built into the insulated handgrip which, when the trigger stud was depressed, energised the steel of the mauls head with 10,000volts of electricity. There were 12 shiny new Shock mauls in the crate, each stored carefully with their power cell ejected and locked into a separate, fireproofed compartment.

The second crate contained three M36A1 semi-automatic combat shotguns. Each one shipping with a set of 5 12rnd box magazines. The first two magazines in each set were marked with a cross of yellow tape bearing the legend "Less Lethal" and, on inspection, were loaded with capacitance gel. The second pair of magazines were marked with the blue cross that universally denoted a training load and proved to filled with the beanbag rounds which Major Meyers had said would be effective LL loads against unarmoured targets. The final magazine in each set was loaded with ceramic slugs, ideal for armour penetration. Someone had affixed a post-it note to the topmost magazine bearing a short message scrawled in pencil

"Less Lethal"

Was it a joke? The command team knew who they brought on right? These were what was left of the Delta Dogs. They'd done ten plus live combat drops, and had a higher in person kill count outside of a war zone than any 3 companies. They had fought Xenos in space, in orbit, on planets, moons, open ocean, plains, jungles, and urban environment. They were not brought on for 'capture' missions, and the only humanitarian action they committed to were bullets in the brains of those that were already dead.

Morse looked at the box of hammers and shotguns. Interesting concepts that they were non lethal... but if Morse had to get close enough to chitin husk that grew out of a person that he could use that hammer... he didn't wouldn't like those odds.

He looked at the ammunition with pursed lips, and gave a dead look to Sam.

"You're better with the take em' alive approach." Morse commented. "What ya thinks the better to use? The zap-hammer... or the bean bullets?" Morse asked. Sam was always more inclined towards not melting their adversary whole.

Marines or not... twelve hours was not the most ideal time frame to save parasite bearing souls.

Morse was still not at the point to question the new command. "Squad, take a beat stick and check the battery. If you aint never done some manual labor today may be your day to get strong." Morse concluded.

Sam KNEW this was not going to go over well with Morse, still, she was thankful he hadn't immediately discarded the idea.

She didn't enjoy the idea of having to 'use the kit gloves' either; but she also knew that if there was ANY way somebody infected with one of these things could be cured; she felt that was worth a risk.

"I gotta go with de shotguns", she answered while grabbing a few clips and unloaded the less-lethal rounds and then manually inserting them into her pump-action shotgun while also filling her pockets with spares. "If we're close enough to have to try zappin' 'em....I tink we did something wrong."

As soon as they reached the local garison, four marines delivered supply crates in a hurry. She jumped out of the APAC and approached them, being greeted with the usual salute. She saluted back.

The lead corporal spoke up.
"Compliments of Major Meyers, Lieutenant. and she said to wish you Good Luck and Good Hunting!"

"Thank you, Corporal, we take it from here"

Then she briefly took a look at the new gear and turned to Sgt. Maj. Sykes ...

"Sergeant Major, i want to have a shotgun with non-leathal ammo and a shock maul at each squad. Load the two crates into the APC after the gear-up. We move out to that bar to investigate in 5"

"someone grab me a shotgun plus a box of less lethal please" Paulson shouted from the front seat.
having been in boot camp they all had had experience of less lethal rounds as drill instructors where vindictive and cruel people using them as "encouragement was not unheard of, these rounds where not going to stop a pissed off marine but enough might cause them to slow down.

Sykes picked up one of the shock mauls and admired it. "This is pretty cool! Any volunteers I can test it out on?" He looked around at the Marines with a grin. "Alright, you heard the lady. Load those crates in the vehicles. That's one maul for almost everybody. Kelly, Davros, Paulson, take the shotguns. That’s one for each squad, and load them with less lethal rounds. Let’s go!" fortunately Sam Hall already brought a shotgun so that would make four. Sykes clambered back into his vehicle and examined his new maul, ensuring it was ready to go.

Someone opened the drivers door and a shotgun plus box of ammo was passed in, it was in pristine new shiny condition, Paulson gave it a one over, racked it a few times to make sure the action was clear and smooth, then loaded up with the less than lethal rounds.

As soon as the APAC reach a halt, Darren popped the rear door and leapt out. His boot's crunching on worn tarmac. His radio crackled in his ear with the voices of Lt Harper and SgtMaj Sykes.

"Sergeant Major, i want to have a shotgun with non-lethal ammo and a shock maul at each squad. Load the two crates into the APC after the gear-up. We move out to that bar to investigate in 5"

"Alright, you heard the lady. Load those crates in the vehicles. That's one maul for almost everybody. Kelly, Davros, Paulson, take the shotguns. That’s one for each squad, and load them with less lethal rounds. Let’s go!"

Darren keyed his own radio as he double-timed over to the packing crates

"Copy that, Sarge"

The Shotgun was reassuringly heavy and solid in his gloved hands. Darren slapped a magazine of Capacitance Gel rounds into the weapon and racked the charging handle to chamber the first round before engaging the safety and letting the bulky weapon hang on it's slings. Darren carefully stowed his M41 in the weapon rack in the back of the APAC along with his spare ammo and filed the, now empty, pouches on his webbing with the shotgun magazines; making sure the box of Solid Slugs was in the most accessible position.
He keyed his mic a second time as he remounted the APAC

"This is Kelly. Locked, Loaded and Ready to Roll!"

Clint examined the provided shotgun ammunition finding he could load it in his shotgun and grabbed some of both the capacitance gel and beanbag munitions. He had seen the beanbag rounds in use quite a few times over the years and at 20-60 feet or so they could provide many people with the proper motivation to listen to the person shooting it. The capacitance gel he was not as familiar with and pulled up their specs and usage on his data pad. The shock maul was different than the small hand held stunner that he kept with his kit. The weapon had a decent weight to it and the grip felt right. He took one and loaded the battery. "This thing makes a fella feel a bit like a blacksmith." he said as he tested the balance and range of motion of the maul.
