Turn 17: Hostile Contacts on the Ground

Post by wargamerGM » Wed Jul 27, 2022 11:02 am

The gunships flashed over the convoy and banked around for another pass, pursued by ribbons of tracer-fire from the turret gunners on the 3 APACs. This time the gunships approached their targets from directly astern, rushing up on the speeding convoy in an echelon left formation from which they could both open fire without fear of accidentally targeting each other.

The lead gunship fired first, closely followed by it's wing-man. The twin streams of tracer flashing out from the chin-mounted rotary cannons and chasing the APAC's which began to weave left and right as the drivers frantically attempted to evade the incoming gunfire. The marines in the gunners cradles swung their weapons to bear and returned fire as the gunships flashed overhead. Heavy, armour piercing rounds crashed into both APAC and gunship, shattering or ricocheting from their armoured skins in showers of sparks or gouging great holes in the plating which bled flurries of molten metal spawling.

The marines APAC's acquired many new ventilation holes but, fortunately, no one was directly hit and no critical components sustained damage. The gunships were less fortunate. The first one buzzed low overhead and banked away and headed for the horizon, trailing smoke and chased by fire from APAC 1. The second held it's course a fraction of a second to long and the streams of fire from APACs 2 and 3 caught it, chewing into the wing root and engine and tearing it from the sky. The gunship spiraled down a couple of hundred meters ahead of the convoy where it came to rest in a cloud of brick dust and auto-extinguisher gas. It was wedged across the road completely blocking the convoys route.

Immediately, figures in combat armour and carrying weapons began to spill out of the crashed aircraft. Some of them were limping or assisting wounded comrades but to the trained eyes of the Devil Dawgs they clearly moved with professionalism and purpose, falling rapidly into cover and obviously preparing to defend their position.
In the back of APAC 1, seated beside 'Doc' Kelly, PFC Carvalho began cough and splutter and then started to convulse violently...

SGT Samantha Hall in APAC 2

Sam let out a whoop of victory at seeing the gunships dealt with, but even while yelling out she swiveled the machine gun around to track the downed aircraft. Seeing the figures emerging from the wreckage, she did her best to aim low and let a long spray of rounds 'walk' up and to both sides of the biggest group of troops she could see....

Paulson heard Sam's whoops of joy and a muffled explosion from inside the crew area, he could see nothing and waited for developments.

The turret mounted gun opened fire again this time with short controlled bursts, the camera's from the front of the APC showed troops scrambling from a downed flyer, tracer rounds scything towards them.

currently safe from small arms fire Paulson wondered whether they would be ordered to assault on foot or stay in the APC.

Having had a decent number of rounds hit the mark, Sokolova keeps the turret aimed at the gunship as it crashes into the ground. Keeping her turret focused on the crash and the moving personnel targets from the crash, she straightens her resolve, aiming at the soft targets with the gun. She mentions to her immediate APAC, "A few guns on the ground, boys. I keep them busy for now. Just be ready."

<Tag 2nd APAC>

Looking up to the sky to verify no other gun ships were in sight, she swivels the turret toward the soft targets and methodically unloads a few bursts to pin down the enemy.

Henniger absorbed the developments. He looked over at Morse, then back at Paulson. He had two Marines left in his team. Sokolova was already engaged, Paulson was ready to dismount if needed.

"Third Team, Sok, good work keep it up. Paulson if we dismount you're with me, extra frags."

The skirmish on the road had been unusual for Morse. He had been ready to go and take the fight to the enemy, and make good use of the ruthless training and experience he had over years of combat. But just as he was ready, having taken a seat and ready to go to work, he made a really stupid mistake.

Morse had never been very interested in a the safety first approach for the mundane. This included seatbelts. Without properly strapping in Morse had been left to move as loose as some of the cargo that was not exactly stowed to perfection. So when the vehicle rumbled and rattled at speed, avoiding the strafing fire... Morse hit his head on his seats very own guardrail handle.

Fixing the M56 Smartgun, Morse did not have a helmet on as it was not compatible with the eye piece. So when he took the full force, everything went black and he gradually came to.

Fortunately he was smart enough to hook his arm through the guard on his right. Morse mostly had just been bobbing in the skirmish semi conscious. Not exactly the way of the warrior.

When he regained his focus he heard his team calling out in perfect precision in the fray. He touched his head and found it bleeding at the side.

Morse was embarrassed, and opted to cover it up. He grabbed his bandana rag off the side of his M56 that he used to wipe it down and wrapped it around his head. It might look a little like he was playing the part of the girzzled vet, but the small trickle of blood on his neck gave away his game.

"Excellent work." Morse said moving forward towards the door. "Agreed in full Henniger, you two sweep it, and we can be ready to cover you here."

Paulson unbuckled as soon as Morses order came through, he grabbed his incinerator and extra fuel can then got ready to disembark.

a small voice sounded in the back of his head, he turned round and picked up four extra frag grenades, mentally thanking his buddy for the subliminal reminder.

"Paulson Locked and cocked ready to disembark" he sent over the squad channel.

he placed his right hand over the big button that said smoke and got ready to punch it, fourteen smoke launchers would chuck out a screen in the close and medium range from the APC obscuring it from view and hopefully allowing for an speedy and safe exit.

Henniger saw Morse come to, and sort himself. Being behind the wheel, after Morse got himself secured, he gunned the truck into full send and approached the left flank of the wrecked fighter.

"Sok, you stay on the gun, cover us weapons free."

<Tag Sokolova>

"Hey bud," he shouted over his shoulder to Paulson, "when we stop it's sweep and clear. Take a remote for the smokescreen clacker. We get hit harder then we can handle or they try to AT the truck, hit it and react to near ambush. We need to let the convoy get past once we drill whoever's left, no time for securing EPW's...Staff Sergeant Morse, we'd appreciate the extra cover."

<Tag Paulson and Morse>

Henniger skidded to a halt fifteen meters adjacent to and slightly past the wreckage. Sokolova had a full view of the wrecked fighter, and the convoy could squeeze by on the other side. It was as good as he could get it.

"Victor Two on target, clearing now!" He spat into the all-hands circuit.

<tag everyone>

He grabbed his pulse rifle and slammed his free fist against his harness quick disconnect. His adrenaline made his pulse thump in his ears and even through his combat gloves, his hand throbbed from slamming the metal octagon of the quick release.

He hit the pavement and got his M41 up and aimed at the fighter. He closed in on Paulson and together they stalked around their vehicle and towards the far side of the wreck. Paulson had his incinerator so Henniger shooter-walked at his shoulder, just a hair behind him, sweeping his sights over every angle as they circled to the exposed crew doors.

Paulson grabbed a vehicle remote, one of its many options was to launch the different smoke screens in various combinations when no one was near the big button or in the drivers seat.

the pilot light clicked and lit the small flame as he exited the APC they where already in range of the wreckage he has half tempted to blast the exposed rear section just to clear out anyone who might be lurking in there but held off for this second.

walking just ahead of his friend so he didn't set him alight they progressed slowly towards the downed flyer.

Samantha Hall in APAC 2

Sam called for Dmitri to carefully move the vehicle closer to Morse's vehicle so that they could help out if his squad got into any trouble. She kept an alert eye and ear out for any signs of danger and kept the MG ready to rock and roll if needed.....

Sykes felt the fear of death as the airships opened fire. It felt like a knife to the heart as the adrenaline shot through him. Swerving the vehicle to avoid the enemy fire, he heard the exultant cries of the others as they not only survived the attack but hit back. Then he heard something weird from the back of the vehicle. "What's going on back there, Kelly?" he barked over his shoulder. Pulling the vehicle to a stop, he spun and saw Carvalho convulsing. "Fuck," he exclaimed. He had told the Marines that everything would be alright, but he had let them down. Danny was pretty sure he knew what was about to happen. "Kelly, hit him with a sedative then get back. Lieutenant, take the wheel in case we need to move." He clambered into the back with some difficulty and crouched against the opposite wall from Carvalho, training his pulse rifle on the poor Marine.

Darren hit the quick releases on his restraints as Carvalho began to convulse and was already reaching for his medkit when Sykes barked the order "Kelly, hit him with a sedative then get back". Darren held the thrashing marine down with one hand and pulled an auto injector marked with a green M for Morphine from his kit with the other, popping off the cap with his thumb and stabbing down hard into Carvalho's shoulder. He felt the click of the spring-loaded needle deploying and heard the hiss of the pneumatic ampule inside forcing the medication into the target's bloodstream.
After a moment, the medication took effect and Carvalho relaxed in his seat.

Darren rapidly began unfastening Carvalho's restraints and manhandling him down to the floor of the APAC where there would be room to work. Simultaneously he keyed his radio to signal LCpl Davros in APAC 3.
"Dav, I've got a problem here. Can you get to APAC 1? I need another pair of hands a second medkit stat. Looks like we have to get creative after all"

Paulson suddenly realized how stupid he was being, he halted and signaled to Henniger to stop as well, he unslung his motion detector turned it on and performed a sweep, they might not be visible yet but if the bastards where moving they would show up now.

Henniger nodded and kept still, assuming as solid a shooter's stance as he could. He swept his eyes across the wreckage as Paulson worked the tracker.
