He breathed a sigh of relief that had been a close one.

"Echo Squad... stand by. Talk to me, I need clarification. You’ve been here before. You understand this environment better than we do." His eyes flicked. "What exactly are we walking into? You said they prefer the drop. You said they’re waiting for commitment. Define that."

Hesitation.

"That’s not a request. Report."

The channel stayed open a second too long.

Then Marrow answered.

No rush. No apology. Just a voice that had learned to spend words carefully.

“Lieutenant.”

A pause. You could hear the ship in it. The distance.

“You’re not in a tunnel. You’re in a throat.”

Another beat.

“It closes when you commit.”

Static scratched across the line, soft and dry.

“They don’t attack movement. They measure it. Pace. Spacing. Pattern.”

Marrow exhaled once. Not tired. Just… marking time.

“When you decide where you’re going—when you push with intent—they answer.”

A faint shift in the background. Boots on something that wasn’t quite ground.

“The drop isn’t random. It’s timing.”

Another voice cut in—Glass, light, almost amused.

“They like certainty,” she said. “It makes you predictable.”

Silence again.

Then Marrow, finishing it.

“They let you walk until you believe the path is yours.”

A longer pause this time.

“They don’t want scattered targets.”

Breaker’s voice followed. Flat. Final.

“They want a cluster.”

Whisper, barely there—

“…one body… many eyes…”

The channel breathed.

Marrow again.

“You asked what you’re walking into.”

A beat.

“A sensory layer that is learning you in real time.”

Another.

“And adapting its response.”

The last words came quieter.

“First contact was curiosity.”

A pause.

“This will not be.”

He swallowed. "Alright. We... adjust. If they’re reading pattern, then we don’t give them one." His eyes tracked the formation ahead. "Break uniform pace. Vary your steps, no synchronized movement."

"And... spread it out. Slightly. Not enough to lose each other, just," The clicking in the walls made him nervous. "Maintain visual contact. But don’t cluster."

"We keep moving forward... eh, but not with intent." He took a deep breath. "Echo, keep point. Call anything you see before it happens. Everyone else... stay loose. Stay unpredictable."

"Now move." He licked his lips. He was suddenly very thirsty.

"unpredictable?" Paulson whispered without transmitting.
he tried to alter his movement pattern but when your used to moving in a formation with coordination it was difficult.
"Do you want us to move to be still in easy visual and support range but not quite so centralised?" he privately commed Henninger. he didn't want to overstep his mark with the cpl by ordering movement even if it appeared he might be shaken at the moment.

Echo went first. No chatter. No buildup. Just a quiet shift and they were moving, boots finding places the rest of us hadn’t learned to see yet. They crossed the choke. Nothing happened. No drop. No scramble overhead. The walls flexed once, like something thinking about it, then went still again.
Marrow didn’t even slow down.
“Keep moving.”
Simple as that.
Breaker followed him through. Big man, soft steps. Didn’t look natural. Glass drifted behind them, head cocked like she was listening to a conversation we weren’t invited to. Whisper brushed the wall as she passed. The surface twitched under her fingers.
But it let them go. Just like that. Clean. They cleared the point and didn’t look back.
That’s when we stepped in.
First boot down—someone behind me, maybe Hooper—and the whole place flinched.
Not loud. Not violent. Worse. Responsive.
The ground rippled like we’d stepped on a nerve. The walls answered, little contractions running along them in a chain reaction.
click click click Fast. Too fast.
Trackers lit up all at once. Contacts everywhere and nowhere, sliding along the edges of the scope where you can’t quite pin them.
Second step. The ceiling shifted.
I didn’t see it move. I felt it. Like the air changed direction for a second.
Then something let go up there. Then something else. Marrow’s voice came over the line, calm as ever.
“Contact.”
No surprise in it. No edge. Almost like he’d been expecting it.
Glass chimed in, almost amused.
“They were patient.”
Breaker didn’t waste words.
“Cluster formed.”
That’s when it hit me. They hadn’t missed Echo. They’d skipped them. Saved us for later.
Whisper’s voice slid in last, soft enough you almost missed it. “Now they drop.”
And yeah. That sounded about right.

Paulson watched as Echo moved ahead untouched, then it happened the walls and ceiling began to envelop them.
"Oh shit here we go again!"
Threats began to appear everywhere, had they ignored Echo or was Echo never a target at all, time would tell.
Checking his arc of fire Paulson let out a stream of fire to the right flank insuring he hoped that that side atleast might be secure.

"Cease fire Paulson!" Fletcher snapped over the comm. "No isolated engagement unless you have confirmed contact on visual. You just told the whole structure where we are." A shaky breath. He was struggling with his attention. "Fall back into formation discipline. Tighten spacing again, not scattered."

Paulson muttered under his breath " yeah right group together let them swamp us, didn't our resident experts tell us to do just the opposit."

the walls and floor still burned with a satisfying glow nothing was coming yet but that didn't mean it wouldn't

strangely letting off that quick blast had calmed him slightly he didn't feel quite so helpless the fire light was reasuring.

Alvarez had her gun in a death grip. She did beat with solid commands and the fluidity of this environment was playing havock. 'Don't cluster, Now Cluster.' She wanted to be out of this hell hole and in a room that didn't sense her foot patterns.

Alvarez attempts to shoot the hostiles but her death grip on her gun makes it impossible to be as fluid as she needs. Her hands start to shake and she can't seem to make them stop.

Hooper felt anger and fear rising in his chest like a swirling mix of fire and adrenaline. Echo Squad called out the approaching targets, allowed them to pass unchallenged, and now his team was threatened. Echo Squad was either betraying them or just plain useless. "Fucking Echo Squad! Worthless motherfuckers!" he cursed, loudly. Now the eyeballs were in sight and closing in. Echo Squad didn't seem to think they were worth shooting. The Lieutenant told them to hold their fire. For a couple seconds, Troy felt like he was going insane. He questioned his judgement for those two seconds. Ultimately, he was more frightened of the eyeballs than anything the Lieutenant could do to him. If they held fire, they were going to be slaughtered like cattle, or probably worse. Troy Hooper would not go gently into that good night.
<Tag Echo/anyone>

"Sergeant Soles, multiple targets, permission to engage?!" Hooper barked into the comms, "Corporal Henniger, permission to engage?!" He didn't want to do it; to disobey a direct order. So, he gave the Sergeant or the squad leader three seconds to save his ass from the court martial. When those three seconds were up, Private Hooper opened fire on the enemy. That was his job, to kill the enemy, and he was going to do it, come hell or high water.
<Tag Soles/Henniger>

The sound of his pulse rifle echoed in the tight space, and he screamed with anger, letting out the tension and the aggression in an ecstatic blur of gunfire and shouting. "Let's rock! Get some, fuck you!" he shouted thoughtlessly at an enemy that couldn't understand his battle cry, and would be unmoved even if it could.

Cowboy sees the Lieutenant start to lose his grip, uncertainty erupting as a lack of experience showed through. It happened. Cowboy's last LT didn't make it through the mission because of it.

He moved up to Grim first, a hand on her shoulder and leaned in close. "Support Paulson! Get on his 9 o'clock, 10 paces out!!" His voice is loud to try to call over the sound of the gunfire, but it's not a shriek.

Then he turns back to the Lieutenant. "Sir, we need a skirmish line! Fore and rear! Call 'em out!"

He moves up to Paulson's' 3 o'clock and starts firing at targets.
