Mission 1 Turn 3: Remnants

Post by Corporal Hicks » Sat Jul 20, 2019 2:42 pm

Date: June 22, 2189
Location: Surface of Capua, Nembus System, Andromeda Cluster
Mission time: 05:10:00
With a rope tied to a tree, the marines towed their lifeboat to shore. Sergeant Cano was carefully exfiltrated from the craft and placed on a stretcher, with Corporal Quinn assigned to provide what care he could. Some of the marines carried heavy packs full of gear and food that might come in handy, but most of them would probably prefer to have heavier packs full of food and water.

The battered group began to make its winding way towards the pillar of smoke that blotted out the morning sun, the crash site of the U.S.S. Shiloh. Their path was never a clear one, the environment was one big jungle swamp. The dry land was sparse, and the wet land was interspersed with pools and streams that were often hidden by the dense green growth that covered everything. More then once, the leading marines stepped into wet muck that sucked their leg down to the thigh and required difficult extrication.

Even the fully armored marines found themselves scratched and cut by various vines or branches that hung in their path. The barbs cut their clothes and stuck in their skin beneath. Thorns repeatedly pricked their hands as they used branches as handholds. Over time they started to spot which plants they couldn’t trust and avoided them wherever possible. This didn’t stop the brambles underfoot from perpetually scratching their legs and some left behind red, itchy rashes wherever they touched the skin.

The bugs were generally larger and more unpleasant then the bugs of earth. Dragonfly sized insects buzzed repeatedly around their faces and necks, always trying to find a foothold. Some of these bugs bit pretty hard and it felt like being stuck with a needle. Even worse, the bites swelled up and stung like poison while simultaneously itching uncontrollably. Private Isabel Orozco had it the worst, and it wasn’t long before they gave her the pants and boots of Cano, who was unable to use them. Cano's shirt couldn’t be removed due to the fragile state of his head, so Isabel was still exposed to the dreadful environment as well as the glances of her comrades.

After three hours march, they settled on a little hill where they devoured some rations and drained a few water bottles. They also took off their boots and filthy brown socks to let them air out a little. This reprieve didn’t last long, and soon they were marching again, always driven onward by the seemingly endless enthusiasm of Sergeant Major Sykes. He travelled up and down the line of march, saying encouraging things and telling stupid jokes. On a subconscious level this was encouraging, but some of them began to grow annoyed at the infinitely positive attitude in what was obviously a really shitty situation.

The giant red sun in the sky beat down on them as the day went on, and the sprinkling rain stopped. Each person began to long for the shady spots, even though it meant more scratches and more bugs. But now they were beginning to notice bits of tempered steel littered throughout the forest. These were pieces of the Shiloh which had come off during the atmospheric entry, and some were still smoldering. They even saw a wildfire or two, which were isolated due to the sparsity of dry plants to burn. They also recognized bits of equipment underfoot, a wrench or a welder or clip from a pistol, soon to disappear forever in the endless jungle.

Private Chip Austin was on point now, five hours into the horrible day. He came out of a patch of thick undergrowth and squinted against the light of the sun. Up ahead he saw a lot of smoke, and looking more closely he thought he saw a large hunk of manmade metal. It was a large chunk of the ship’s hull! “Hey! I see something!” he called out to those behind him.

i babtise you on the name .... SHITHOLE

Perez dubbed that planet, after hours of walking through jungle, swamp and muck. And those damned bugs everywhere around.
Hour after hour passed by, but nothing really happened. The route defined itself by closing in on the crash site.
As they closed in, Private Austin noticed "something".

"Hold positions" ... he ordered, while moving up to Austin ...

Planet shithole was living up to its name, Paulsons boots where full of some shit, his legs where itchy as shit, and the whole place was full of methane so smelt of shit. Good name really.

Although breaks had come and gone this was this first time anything had been found. Paulson assumed a defensive position and waited for orders, he snatched a quick glance at his squad mates momentarily lingering on the now semi clad but smeared in mud Pvt Orozco, maybe this planet had its upside.

He allowed his gaze to scan across the jungle, motion detector in one hand its reassuring hum and ping set to its lowest settings but still clear in his trained ears.
Soon an order would come, and they would move again either to check out the contact or back to the long slog of piercing the jungle.

"partial return...unspecific contact , from direction of ship sarge" reported Paulson after checking motion detector, "its not one of us" he added.

Private Paulson's called out an unknown motion detector contact, which meant, that something was moving out in front of them and it was not one of ours. Perez fought down the urge to switch into "kill mode", caused by the rush of adrenalin, which started to flow through his veins. Maybe it was not such a good idea at all to equip his smartgun, but there was no time to think about that at the moment ....

"Dawgs, look sharp, we got movement up ahead" .... he informed the section, about what was going on, in case somebody had missed it, and, judging by the glances toward the half-naked female marine, there surely was at least one.

"Morse, take left flank, we are approaching from the right"
<Tag Morse>

"Paulson, up front to me, we are taking point, Cavalet, Giosso, to the right 3 meter distance, Sarafian, Austin to the left, 3 meter distance, Hoops, you cover our asses. Let's check it out, slow moves, be frosty and sharp. Paulson, talk to me, range and bearing."
<Tag Perez's platoon>

They began to walk slowly towards the contact ....

As jungle planets go, this one wasn't so bad. Five hours of marching had failed to turn up anything larger than bug-sized trying to eat them. It was, Dmitri thought, a definite improvement over Eklyprillion: even the atmo, though methane-heavy, wasn't as bad here and the rebreather mask was brely noticeable in comparison.

Nevertheless, Dmitri was all too aware just how the flora or fauna of a planet could turn deadly on a dime and when the call came out that something was coming for them, Dmitri was ready. Rifle up, he kept his head on a swivel and waited to see what happened next.

Come hell or high water (and didn't they cross those off their bucket list for this shithole already?), Dmitri was determined not to be caught unaware.

BTDT, thankyouverymuch.

Paulson, talk to me, range and bearing.Came the order,
“weak signal range 104m, 23 degrees, little movement, hard to get a good fix Sargent” Paulson replied.
As they cautiously moved forwards the distance came down, but the bearing remained unchanged.
The jungle thinned out with signs of impact and heat damage; something had definitely come this way.
Slowly they moved in formation providing potential covering fire for each other.
At 50m Paulson rechecked his motion scanner and called out bearings and situation again.

after studying the motion tracker Paulson called out his corrections, in a low voice, "confirm, now two contacts, range 50 m, same bearing, close together not moving much, in the wreckage up ahead" he reported.
almost simultaneously the water started getting deeper and the mud thicker, the wreckage up ahead had also made a pool it would seem, the progress became harder as the mud deepend, soon it would be thigh deep if this continued. the smell was getting worse or just annoying Paulson more as his stress levels increased.
As the jungle thinned the wreckage stood clear in the pool ahead, what part of the ship it was Paulson could not tell, slowly he approached on point, as the water became too deep to hold his incinerator he slung it in favor for his side arm and continued forwards with his Sargent.
whatever chunk of ship this was it had made its own crater as it came down, bigger than that of the escape pod that the marines had arrived in. it seemed almost unfathomable that anyone from the ship was alive ahead but they could be scavenging or just taking shelter having come from another escape pod or lifeboat or whatever the navy called them.
<roll awareness>
looking left and right Paulson saw the other marines in flanking positions, taking one last look to ensure the contacts had not suddenly moved Paulson started off towards the wreckage.

Much to Mark's annoyance, the call to hold positions lasted only long enough for him to start opening the case he was lugging around before the call to move came again. All the short starting and stopping had ended up with him having a lot fewer opportunities to upload their position to the lifeboat's system then he'd originally hoped for. Slinging the far-more-awkward-then-it-should-be case over his shoulder and drawing out his pistol, he took up his designated part in the flanking maneuver.

"Hard to believe anyone could have survived coming down in that scrap," Mark commented as Paulson clarified his motion tracker readings. "I hope we're not stumbling on a couple of local critters making a new nest."

As the marines continued forward, it became clear that there was a rather large swampy pond between them and the ship. As far as they could tell there were brambly banks to the left and right, allowing relatively dry movement around the pond. The wreckage lay on the far bank.

Fernandez stumbled behind the much fitter marines under Morse's command, and even after their unbridled tenacity he had to admit they had earned their attitudes. Marines may not have much stomach for travel, but put them on solid ground and anyone would have trouble keeping up. How much Fernandez hated that, no one could tell, but if Sykes had made a third seamen joke they would have found out. His bad mood could have been attributed to falling into a mud pit earlier and twisting his ankle. The twisted ankle was easy to push through, but the grime had dried on his uniform and he felt stiffer than the starch on a captain's shirt.

After what felt like miles of walking he heard Paulsen shout "...unspecified contact..."

Fernandez wasn't sure if anything he had on his person could be of use to anyone, least of all the Intelligence Unit he carried. This planet wasn't exactly on the mission brief.

"Fuck it!"

(Apologies for lack of posting, work has been hectic for the past few weeks)

Quinn looked over the unconscious Marine, hooking up his K52 medical scanner to Sergeant Cano’s vitals. Examining the readout, the medic swore internally. Cano was bleeding in his brain, more commonly known as a stroke. And with the Sergeant unconscious, it made the job that much harder.

To start, Sixtus removed a saline bag from his kit, and hooked it up to Cano via an intravenous drip. He then pulled an injection, found Cano’s artery and administered the drug. Roll Medicine

It wasn’t much, but it would do. Next step would be to remove Cano from the craft, which wasn’t easy. But Marines knew how to make do. Upon seeing the outside world, Quinn swore aloud. Jungle planets were a Medic’s worst environment to work in. The heat and humidity made infections depressingly common and difficult to eradicate, not to mention the flora and fauna one had to be wary of. After assisting in making a litter for Cano, Quinn stayed near it to keep an eye.

On the break, Sixtus sat next to Morse, waving over Sykes to give a report on his patient.

”In a nutshell, the g-forces we pulled induced a stroke in Cano. I got him on Heparin and saline to thin the blood and prevent the clot from increasing, but he needs a full hospital ASAP. He has a few days, a week at the outside.” Sixtus’ voice was it’s normal matter-of-fact, no bullshit tone. He was tired, and had pulled his own footwear off to glare balefully at a blister on his ankle. He sighed, wrung his socks out as much as he could and laid them in the sun to dry out as much as possible. His uniform, now lacking a jacket that he had given up to the navy puke in her skivvies was torn in several locations. His undershirt was likewise rent, and smeared with small patches of blood. The boonie hat that he had grabbed was proving to be incredibly fortuitous in the current climate. His boots were holding up well, but his lack of armor would be a serious problem in a firefight. His only weapon was his M4A3 sidearm, which at least had a suppressor.

On the march, Quinn spotted a pistol magazine which he immediately scavenged. It was empty, and dirty, but useful if they came across any ammunition. He wiped the mud off and stowed it in a pocket when he heard the point man call out. The medic immediately went into a crouch and looking out into the jungle, his handgun in both hands and kept close to his body.

Nikolai Pushkin sullenly trudged through the jungle, growing more irritated with each bug bite or scratch. In his mind was a constant reminder of the risk of trench foot from the swampy water in his boots. To distract himself, he decided to inspect his communications equipment whenever there was a lull in the march. He was glad to see that it was all working more or less. Fortunately the modern design had no seams for water to get through. If only he could say the same thing for his boots. Pushkin also attempted to contact anyone on his radio to see what options for communication were available. He especially tried to hail anyone off-planet with hopes of some kind of rescue. He was not used to Sergeant Major Sykes talking so much, and some of the jokes made him roll his eyes, though he did hear one or two good ones. He thought he caught a dirty look from the navy puke when he heard the second joke about navy seamen.
